Abstract

International assessments show that Indonesian elementary students’ scientific literacy remains low, while classroom practices still emphasize rote learning. This integrative literature review synthesizes the theoretical relationship among Problem-based Learning (PbL), critical thinking, and scientific literacy at the elementary level. Searches in Google Scholar, ERIC, and ScienceDirect identified 127 articles, of which ten peer-reviewed studies met the inclusion criteria. Content analysis revealed three main findings. First, PbL improves critical thinking and scientific literacy, with score gains of 15–25 points and N-gain values of 0.20–0.55. Second, PbL functions as the pedagogical vehicle, critical thinking as the cognitive engine, and scientific literacy as the learning outcome. Third, successful implementation depends on worksheet quality, teacher facilitation, group effectiveness, problem relevance, and time allocation. The study proposes a conceptual framework linking PbL’s five stages with Ennis’s sixteen critical-thinking indicators, providing a theoretical foundation for educators, researchers, and curriculum developers in practice

Abstract

The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2022 reported that Indonesia's science literacy score reached only 383, placing the country 67th out of 81 participating nations, with students in coastal areas facing even greater challenges due to limited access to contextual learning resources. Science instruction in coastal elementary schools remains predominantly theoretical and disconnected from students' daily experiences with marine resources, while local wisdom in traditional fish processing, rich in scientific principles such as osmosis, evaporation, and fermentation, has yet to be systematically integrated into the curriculum. This literature study aims to analyze the integration of traditional fish processing ethnoscience and digital interactive boards within the deep learning framework to enhance science literacy among coastal elementary school students. The study employed a qualitative literature review approach, with data collected from ten relevant articles published between 2015 and 2026, sourced from Google Scholar, ERIC, and ScienceDirect, and analyzed using content analysis techniques. The findings reveal three key contributions: first, traditional fish processing practices contain scientific concepts that can be reconstructed into contextual learning materials; second, digital interactive boards effectively facilitate visualization, simulation, and collaboration essential for deep learning; and third, the synergy between ethnoscience and digital technology within the deep learning framework offers a holistic pedagogical model. The study's primary contribution is the formulation of a conceptual framework demonstrating that the simultaneous integration of ethnoscience, digital interactive boards, and deep learning principles, mindful, meaningful, and joyful learning, can serve as an evidence-based pedagogical strategy to bridge the gap between formal science education and the socio-cultural realities of coastal communities, thereby offering a practical reference for developing contextual science instruction in similar settings

Abstract

Interest in reading is a crucial foundation for achieving students' academic success, particularly at the elementary school level. However, in recent years, there has been a noticeable decline in reading interest among elementary school students, which has significantly impacted their academic performance. This study aims to analyze the inhibiting factors that affect students' interest in reading and their impact on learning achievement. The method employed is a literature review, gathering data from various studies published within the last five years. The findings indicate that low reading interest is caused by a lack of motivation, limited access to appropriate reading materials, and non-innovative learning approaches. Furthermore, the school and family environments also play a vital role in shaping students' reading habits. This research underscores the need for collaboration between schools and families to create an environment that fosters a habit of reading. By understanding the factors that hinder reading interest, it is hoped that improvements in students' academic achievement can be achieved, better preparing them for future educational challenges.

Abstract

This study aims to improve the reading literacy skills of elementary school students through the implementation of Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) integrated with the local wisdom of the Dayak Belusu community. Reading literacy in this research is defined as the ability to understand, interpret, and reflect on written texts at literal, inferential, and summarizing levels. The study employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) based on the spiral model of Kemmis and McTaggart, consisting of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The participants were fifth-grade students at SD Negeri 014 Tana Tidung, North Kalimantan. Data were collected through observation sheets, reading literacy tests, and teacher interviews, and analyzed using quantitative descriptive and qualitative techniques. The results of Cycle I showed that students’ reading literacy was still dominated by literal comprehension and that their participation in discussions was relatively low. After revising the learning strategy in Cycle II, student participation exceeded 80% on most indicators, and the average literacy test score increased from 58 to 76. Teacher interviews confirmed positive changes in cognitive, affective, and attitudinal aspects, including confidence, discipline, and cooperation. These findings indicate that CTL integrated with Dayak Belusu local wisdom effectively enhances reading literacy while strengthening cultural identity and positive character.

Abstract

This study investigated the effects of digital technology–integrated mathematics instruction on elementary students' numeracy achievement, learning motivation, classroom engagement, and technology acceptance. A quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group design was employed involving two Grade VI classes (N = 50) from an elementary school in Tanah Tidung Regency, Indonesia. Data were collected using numeracy pretests and posttests, an ARCS-based learning motivation questionnaire, a Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) questionnaire, a classroom engagement observation sheet, and an implementation fidelity checklist. Prior to hypothesis testing, data were examined using the Shapiro–Wilk and Levene's tests. The data were subsequently analyzed using independent samples t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), normalized gain (N-Gain), and Cohen's d effect size. The results showed that the experimental group achieved significantly higher numeracy performance than the control group, as reflected by higher posttest scores, a greater normalized gain (0.57 vs. 0.26), and a very large effect size (d = 1.99). ANCOVA further confirmed that the improvement remained significant after controlling for students' initial numeracy ability. Students in the experimental group also demonstrated significantly higher learning motivation across all ARCS dimensions, stronger classroom engagement, and high levels of technology acceptance. These findings indicate that integrating digital technology into mathematics instruction enhances students' cognitive achievement while simultaneously promoting positive motivational and behavioral learning outcomes. The study provides practical evidence supporting the implementation of technology-enhanced mathematics instruction in elementary education, particularly in rural school contexts.

Abstract

This study developed and evaluated socio-cultural digital teaching materials for elementary mathematics and examined their validity, practicality, and effectiveness in improving students’ problem solving and self-efficacy. We employed a Research & Development design (Borg & Gall; 7 modified stages). A one-group pretest–posttest field try-out was conducted with Grade-5 students (n = 45). Instruments included a Polya-based problem-solving test and a self-efficacy questionnaire (5-point Likert); expert validation covered content, media, and language. Analyses comprised descriptive statistics, Shapiro–Wilk, paired t-test, N-Gain, effect size (Cohen’s dz), reliability (Cronbach’s α) and inter-rater agreement (Cohen’s κ), and Pearson correlation. Findings indicate very high validity (mean 91.1%) and high practicality (teachers 90.2%; students 88.0%; on-task observation 86.4%). Problem-solving performance rose from 55.3 (SD 11.2) to 76.8 (SD 10.1) with N-Gain = 0.48 (moderate), t(44) = 8.75; p < .001; dz = 1.30; the largest gains appeared in understand and look back. Self-efficacy increased from 3.10 (SD 0.52) to 3.78 (SD 0.49) with t(44) = 7.36; p < .001; dz = 1.10. Changes in self-efficacy correlated moderately and positively with problem-solving N-Gain (r = 0.41; p = 0.005). The results support the combined use of local cultural contexts, multimedia-learning principles, and Polya-based strategy scaffolding as a feasible and impactful approach to strengthening mathematical competence and self-belief in elementary students.

Abstract

21st century education requires the use of creative interactive tools to make learning outcome evaluation more effective. The main challenge is low student participation due to conventional assessment practices. Technologies such as deep learning-based Google Sheet integration offer a solution by providing deep learning evaluation tools. This study focuses on developing the integration of evaluation tools with deep learning-based Google Sheets in the Learning Evaluation course in the PPG program and testing its impact on improving learning outcomes. The research method used R&D with the ADDIE model, with data collected through a pretest-posttest design on two groups, namely the experimental group that used deep learning-based Google Sheets evaluation tools and the control group that used a conventional approach. After testing for normality and homogeneity to ensure that the statistical prerequisites were met, the analysis was continued using a paired t-test. The results showed significance (p < 0.05), indicating that the deep learning-based Google Sheets evaluation tool was effective in improving learning outcomes, while also encouraging student motivation and engagement. In conclusion, the deep learning-based Google Sheets evaluation tool is suitable for implementation in the PPG program, with opportunities for further development through the enrichment of collaboration features and adaptive evaluation to strengthen the appeal and impact of learning.

Abstract

The modern era is characterized by the complexity of a pluralistic culture that requires teachers to act as educators, moral guardians, and facilitators in the learning environment. This challenge requires a foundation of scientific ethics and a contextual learning approach. This study aims to systematically examine scientific ethics as a moral foundation and strategic filter in fostering cultural diversity in elementary schools. The method used is a Systematic Literature Review. Data were collected and analyzed from 16 scientific articles published in 2021-2025, using the PRISMA guidelines from the Google Scholar and ScienceDirect indexed databases. The results of the study show that scientific ethics serve as a moral compass that guides every decision and interaction in the classroom through eight prerequisites of professionalism. Scientific ethics directs the application of a culture-based approach as an effective pedagogical strategy for fostering diversity. The synergy between scientific ethics and a cultural approach is the basis for realizing peaceful schools through three main prerequisites: the moral integrity of educators, pedagogical approaches, and collaboration between teachers, parents, and the community. A cultural approach supported by a strong ethical foundation can help connect the curriculum to students' lives, fostering tolerance, empathy, and mutual cooperation. Thus, this study not only discusses the relationship between scientific ethics and culture-based approaches but also provides a novelty in the form of a conceptual model of the synergy between the two as a pedagogical foundation for multicultural education in an independent curriculum.

Abstract

This study aims to 1) analyze the character values ​​contained in the characters of Panji Asmarabangun and Galuh Candra Kirana, 2) identify the process of internalization of the character values ​​of Panji Asmarabangun and Galuh Candra Kirana in grade 5 students of MIN 1 Kediri City 3) describe the supporting factors and obstacles to learning with teaching materials of Panji Asmarabangun and Galuh Candra Kirana folk tales. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with data analysis techniques of data reduction, data presentation, drawing conclusions and verification. Learning using Panji Asmarabangun and Galuh Candra Kirana folk tales has a strong impact on instilling character values ​​in grade 5 students of MIN 1 Kediri City, such as the values ​​of honesty, responsibility, courage, perseverance, loyalty, and emotional control. Support from learning with Panji Asmarabangun and Galuh Candra Kirana folk tales is using video learning media and teaching materials in the form of short novels, then the obstacle is the limited time to teach in depth and comprehensively.

Abstract

Creative thinking skills are essential for students because they can help them find innovative solutions in facing various challenges and problems that arise due to technological advances and their readiness in 21st century skills. This study aims to develop SMART M3D learning media to improve students' creative thinking skills in the fifth grade elementary school spatial structure material. The development model used is Lee & Owens. The validity test results show that the media meets the very valid category, with scores: media experts 90%, material experts 93%, and learning experts 94.6%. Thus, SMART M3D media is declared suitable for use in learning activities. This AR-based learning media is also considered very practical to use in the learning process. This is evidenced by the results of the teacher response questionnaire with a score of 98% and the student response questionnaire which obtained a score of 95%, both of which are included in the very practical category. Analysis of the results of the pre-test and post-test of creative thinking skills in the experimental class shows an increase in each indicator of creative thinking. The average pre-test score was 52.25 (quite creative category), increasing in the post-test to 69.25 (creative category).
