Abstract

This study aims to describe students' mistakes in solving rectangular problems based on their cognitive development. This research is a descriptive qualitative study with 4 research’s subjects taken based on purposive sampling. Data collection techniques use tests, namely Test of Logical Operations and Problem-solving Tests. Data analysis techniques include reduction, presentation, and data verification. The results of the study show that mistakes that are often made by students are less complete in writing what is known and asked about the problem. At the stage of devising a plan, students are wrong in determining the formula, the complete steps to be used, and do not write an answer. At the stage of carrying out the plan, students tend to immediately calculate what is known in the problem, not even writing answers at all. Students do not check the answer so that the results of their conclusions and conclusions are wrong.

Abstract

Mathematics is regarded as one of the most important lessons that any student must learn. Internal and external factors, in general, influence students' mathematics learning achievement. One of the internal factor variables is students’ learning interest in mathematics. Many research publications show that the variable of interest is strongly related to mathematics learning achievement, so this study aims to prove and quantify the size of the relationship between mathematics learning interest and mathematics learning achievement using quantitative meta-analysis research approaches. The independent variable is student learning interest, and the dependent variable is mathematical learning achievement. The data was acquired from an online database search on Google Scholar within the 2009 to 2019 timeframe. Thirty research publications that satisfied the required criteria were utilized as the sample. Data analysis uses a quantitative meta-analysis approach with a correlation meta-analysis. The findings revealed a favorable and substantial (5% significance level) link between learning interest and student mathematics learning achievement. The average weight value of effect size was 0.540 in the range of 0.430 to 0.640 in the medium category. These findings have demonstrated the consistency of previous researchers' conclusions.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze students' critical thinking skills in non-formal learning based on learning assistance for elementary school level students in the gemstone craft center area of Sukodono Village. The type of research is descriptive research with a quantitative approach. The research subjects were elementary school age students who had previously been provided with non-formal learning assistance using techniques to stimulate critical thinking. Test results are analyzed based on scoring guidelines and critical thinking indicators, then converted into scores and categorized based on critical thinking skills criteria. The novelty of this research is that the analysis of critical thinking skills in non-formal learning has never been carried out before. Analysis of critical thinking skills indicators shows the value of the Focus indicator of 85.7 (very high); Reason indicator of 63.2 (high); Inference indicator of 78.5 (high); Situation indicator of 73.8 (high); Clarity indicator of 70.4 (high); Overview indicator of 58.7 (fair). This indicates that non-formal learning based on learning assistance is useful in improving aspects of knowledge, especially in critical thinking skills. Therefore, non-formal education can be used as an alternative method in increasing the potential of students as a support for formal learning.

Abstract

Open-ended approach has a valuable impact in supporting students’ mathematical problem solving ability. This approach allows students’ to explore different ways in solving mathematical problems, not only focusing on one solution but also considering other alternatives. However, students inevitably make mistakes in solving the problems in their learning process. Therefore, it is important to analyze the errors made by students in mathematics learning using student worksheets with an open-ended approach. This research is a descriptive qualitative study conducted in 6 Private National Junior High Schools in Yogyakarta. These schools were randomly selected using a spinning wheel from 13 schools in the third quartile. The subjects of this study were 384 students selected from 12 classes out of 22 classes in all the research schools. Data were collected using a problem-solving ability test on the subject of systems of linear equations in two variables and interviews. Student errors were categorized based on Newman's Error Analysis, which includes: (1) reading errors, (2) comprehension errors, (3) transformation errors, (4) process skill errors, and (5) encoding errors. The results of this study show that the dominant error sequence made by students is process skill errors, reading errors, comprehension errors, transformation errors, and encoding errors. These errors are caused by students' inaccuracy in calculations, difficulties in calculations, errors in reading the questions, comprehension errors in understanding the given mathematical problems, errors in translating the information provided in the questions, and errors in concluding the problem-solving results due to students not understanding the question instructions properly, and the given mathematical problems being unfamiliar to the students         Keywords: student errors, student worksheet, open-ended approach, problem-solving skills.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpmipa/v25i1.pp468-485
