Abstract

ABSTRACT The target of corn productivity on sloping dry land will be difficult to achieve without soil conservation technology, especially erosion control and increasing soil organic matter. Biochar is an appropriate technology that can increase soil binding capacity so that it is not easily dispersed. Its high carbon content becomes a source of organic C if used as a soil enhancer. The purpose of this activity is to increase farmers' insight into implementing conservation-based corn farming using biochar as a source of soil carbon. The implementation method is a demonstration plot in corn fields where farmers actively participate in each activity, consisting of making rorak in the direction of the slope, making biopore holes, applying biochar as a soil conditioner and corn cultivation using the 2:1 legowo system corn cultivation using the 2:1 legowo system. The output of this activity is increased knowledge of farmers (76 members of the Mamminasa Deceng farmer group) about the concept of conservation-based corn farming and the role of biochar as a carbon source in improving soil quality and increasing soil fertility based on soil organic C content (4%). Abstract

Kata kunci: bayam merah; hidroponik; pupuk maggot-cair; selada ABSTRACTMaggot liquid fertilizer, derived from the fermentation of organic materials by Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae or maggots, represents a promising type of liquid organic fertilizer. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of liquid maggot fertilizer on the growth of Amaranthus tricolor L. (red spinach) and Lactuca sativa L. (lettuce) in a hydroponic system. The experiment was conducted using a randomized block design (RBD) with four fertilizer concentration treatments: control (without liquid maggot fertilizer), 100 mL, 200 mL, and 300 mL of liquid maggot fertilizer mixed with 3 liters of water. The results showed that liquid maggot fertilizer significantly increased plant height, fresh weight, and solution concentration (ppm), especially at a concentration of 200 mL for red spinach and 300 mL for lettuce. At the highest concentration (300 mL), red spinach experienced a slight decrease in growth, while lettuce showed a consistent increase. The use of liquid maggot fertilizer has also been shown to maintain the pH of the solution within the optimal range. Liquid maggot fertilizer can be an alternative organic fertilizer that is environmentally friendly and effective in hydroponic cultivation, reducing dependence on synthetic chemical fertilizers, and supporting sustainable agriculture. Keywords: red spinach; hydroponics; maggot-liquid fertilizer; lettuce

Abstract

This study investigates the effects of different organic soil amendments on the chemical characteristics of dryland soils to enhance agricultural practices in arid areas. Employing a randomized complete block design, six treatments were administered oversix-months on acidic soils with low organic matter concentration, exemplifying typical dryland conditions in tropical areas. The treatments comprised high and moderate doses of mixed organic compounds, alongside control groups without amendments. Soil samples were analyzed pre- and post-treatment for pH, carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium concentrations. Results demonstrate that high-dose organic mixtures markedly enhanced soil pH, carbon content, and nutrient availability, particularly phosphorus and potassium, in comparison to control and lower-dose treatments. The research underscores the essential importance of suitable amendment kinds and quantities in improving soil quality and sustainability. The findings indicate that the strategic application of organic amendments can markedly enhance the chemical properties of dryland soils, hence promoting more sustainable farming operations.

Abstract

A recurring challenge in implementing the Community Service Program (KKN) lies in students’ limited ability to understand the socio-cultural dynamics of local communities. As a result, activities often become technical and disconnected from the actual needs and values of the people. This study seeks to address that challenge by applying a participatory ethnographic approach to document and reflect on the involvement of Universitas Muhammadiyah Parepare students in community activities in Buntu Barana Village, Bungin Subdistrict, Enrekang Regency, particularly during the celebration of Indonesia’s 76th Independence Day. The students did not merely serve as facilitators but became active community members, engaging in planning, implementation, and evaluation processes. Through this engagement, it was revealed that the Independence Day celebration in the village was not just a symbolic event, but a platform for expressing solidarity, preserving the value of cooperation (gotong royong), and strengthening collective identity. The resulting ethnographic narrative illustrates a transformative learning experience for the students in understanding village life and national values from a grassroots perspective. This study highlights the importance of integrating ethnographic approaches in KKN to enable students to make more contextual, reflective, and meaningful contributions to community service practices.

Abstract

The ethnographic Community Service Program (KKN) in Betao Riase Village, Pitu Riawa District, Sidenreng Rappang Regency, was designed to address the socio-economic challenges of rural communities that rely on agricultural products without added value. Through an ethnographic approach, the KKN team conducted participatory observations and in-depth interviews to understand the local social and cultural structures as a basis for intervention. During the 40-day implementation, the program focused on four main areas: education and religion, facilities and infrastructure, economy and industry, and social and community. The results of the program include improving students' literacy skills, participation in religious activities, production of durian jam as an MSME product, and training in liquid organic fertilizer to support sustainable agriculture. Cooperation activities and the celebration of the 76th Anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia also strengthened the social cohesion of the community. Evaluations showed an increase in household income of up to 28.6%, a decrease in waste volume of up to 40%, and high community participation. This article confirms that the ethnographic approach in KKN is able to encourage community independence through collaboration between academics and residents, and provide a basis for development policies based on local potential and ecological awareness.

Abstract

The 2021 Community Service Program (KKN) Group 4 of Universitas Muhammadiyah Parepare adopted a participatory approach to strengthen the green campus culture in the Campus II environment. The program began by mapping the problems of organic and inorganic waste management, followed by training in composting and recycling plastic waste into useful products, education on the cleanliness of public facilities, as well as fun walks and blood donation activities, all aimed at promoting social sustainability. Field documentation and periodic reflections were used for evaluation, while descriptive analysis focused on program achievements, the level of academic community participation, and sustainability potential. The results showed active involvement of up to 75% in composting (∼12 kg of organic waste/week), an increase in satisfaction with public facilities by 60%, and the formation of an environmentally friendly lifestyle through messages about reducing plastic waste. The experiential learning and service learning approaches have proven effective in instilling sustainability values, while the participatory model encourages collaboration across campus elements. Recommendations include the establishment of an environmental management unit and the integration of environmentally friendly activities into extracurricular and applied curricula.
