Abstract

This study aims to analyze the meaning of physics symbols in the topic of work and energy from the perspective of the Indonesian language and to determine their influence on students’ conceptual understanding in physics learning. The background of this research is based on the low level of students’ understanding of physics symbols, which often leads to misconceptions in the topic of work and energy. Physics symbols such as work (W), energy (E), force (F), and displacement (s) are frequently understood only as mathematical formulas without comprehending their actual conceptual meanings. This research employed a literature review method with a descriptive qualitative approach. The data were obtained from various written sources, including physics textbooks, scientific journals, research articles, learning modules, and other academic references related to work and energy as well as the use of scientific language in physics. Data collection techniques were carried out through reading, understanding, noting, and classifying relevant information from the literature sources. Data analysis was conducted through the stages of data collection, data classification, data interpretation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study indicate that physics symbols play an important role as representations of scientific language in physics learning. However, differences in meaning between everyday language and scientific language often cause students to misinterpret the concepts of work and energy. In addition, learning that focuses too much on mathematical problem-solving also contributes to students’ low conceptual understanding. Therefore, more contextual, interactive, and concept-oriented learning approaches are needed to improve students’ understanding of the meaning of physics symbols in learning physics.

Abstract

This study aims to determine how students at Medan State University use everyday language. Do they prefer formal or slang? It also aims to determine what makes them choose to use slang. To conduct this study, we used a survey method by distributing questionnaires to 30 students from various departments. We randomly selected them. Our questionnaire consisted of 19 questions covering information about themselves, their communication habits, their use of slang, and their thoughts on formal language. The results showed that the majority of students, 96.7%, use slang in their daily lives. The main reason they use slang is because they feel more comfortable and relaxed communicating with it. WhatsApp is the communication platform most used by students, with around 90%. The most popular slang words among them are mager (feeling tired), gabut (feeling tired), healing (healing), baper (feeling tired), and bucin (feeling). However, interestingly, around 53.3% of students admitted to having used slang unconsciously in formal situations. This indicates that slang is beginning to creep into situations that should be more formal. The majority of students, 56.7%, believe that using slang does not significantly impact their ability to use formal language. However, 46.7% agree that slang can threaten the sustainability of the Indonesian language. Therefore, more serious language development efforts on campus are needed to ensure students can use appropriate language in appropriate situations.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the meaning of physics technical terms that potentially cause misconceptions among students through a semantic approach. The method used is descriptive qualitative with data collected through library research and textual observation of 20 physics technical terms. The analysis was conducted by comparing the meaning of each term based on the Big Indonesian Dictionary (KBBI) and physics textbooks. The results show that differences in meaning between everyday and scientific contexts are the primary factor causing misconceptions, particularly on familiar terms such as force, work, heat, temperature, mass, and momentum, as well as abstract terms such as relativity, quantum, and electromagnetism. This research is expected to assist educators in conveying physics concepts more accurately so that student misconceptions can be minimized from the beginning of learning.

Abstract

Apart from being used as a communication tool, Indonesian is also used to increase the competence of human resources. Quality human resources can be achieved by optimizing a series of physics learning processes in achieving learning goals at school. To achieve the expected physics learning objectives, language skills are needed, skills in using language in accordance with the provisions aimed at making it easier to understand science. Language accuracy is one of the skills in using language. If the use of language in the physics learning process in the classroom is inappropriate, it will give rise to students' misperceptions in absorbing the physics concepts explained by the supervisor. If this cannot be avoided, it will give rise to misconceptions in knowledge transfer activities. In this article, to find out how important the role of Indonesian is in learning physics, a quantitative research was carried out using the questionnaire method, where this questionnaire contained three questions and was given to thirty respondents from various levels of education. Based on the results of this research, it is proven that the role of Indonesian is very important in the physics learning process. Remembering that the learning process is related to the interaction between supervisors and students through language.

Abstract

Botany is a scientific field with a rich vocabulary largely borrowed from foreign languages, particularly Latin, English, and Dutch. The fifth edition of KBBI, as the normative reference for Indonesian, has incorporated botanical terms through linguistic adaptation processes in accordance with prevailing standardization principles. This study aims to identify and analyze patterns of botanical term borrowing in the fifth edition of KBBI across phonological, orthographic, morphological, and semantic dimensions. A library research method was employed, examining KBBI fifth edition, the General Guidelines for Term Formation (PUPI), and relevant linguistic and botanical references. Data were collected by inventorying entries labeled Bot. in KBBI and analyzed descriptively using a comparative linguistic approach. Findings indicate that phonological and orthographic adaptation dominate the borrowing process, with Latin as the primary source language. Spelling inconsistencies were also identified, highlighting the need for updated scientific term standardization guidelines. This study is expected to contribute to Indonesian scientific lexicography and the strengthening of standardized scientific vocabulary.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze various forms of Indonesian language errors found in scientific communication in physics. The research employed a qualitative descriptive method using a literature study approach. Data were collected from journals, scientific articles, and physics teaching materials discussing the use of Indonesian in academic writing. Data collection techniques included documentation and literature review, while data analysis was conducted through identifying, classifying, and describing the language errors found in the sources. The findings indicate that language errors are still frequently encountered in scientific communication in physics, particularly in spelling, capitalization, punctuation, word choice, and ineffective sentence structures. These errors may reduce the clarity of information, lower the quality of scientific writing, and lead to misunderstandings of physics concepts presented in the text. Furthermore, limited understanding of Indonesian language rules and inadequate editing processes were identified as factors contributing to language errors. Therefore, improving the proper use of Indonesian language according to linguistic standards is necessary to support effective, accurate, and comprehensible scientific communication in physics.
