Abstract

This research discusses the potential application of Enuma School as a tool to aid in the enrichment of Indonesian vocabulary for BIPA (Bahasa Indonesia untuk Penutur Asing) learners. Using a qualitative approach, the study analyzes the interactive features and contextual content offered by the application. The analysis results indicate that Enuma School can serve as an effective alternative digital application for developing Indonesian vocabulary, enhancing BIPA students' motivation to learn through educational games, supporting independent learning, and fostering digital literacy. However, challenges such as integration with the BIPA curriculum, training for educators, evaluating the effectiveness of the application's use, and addressing technology accessibility gaps need to be considered. This study suggests that educational institutions consider using this application as part of their BIPA learning strategy to achieve better outcomes in mastering Indonesian vocabulary.

Abstract

The growing need for literacy and language competency evaluation in Indonesia has opened up new entrepreneurial opportunities in language and literature education, particularly in exam/test preparation and literacy services. This study aims to describe the forms, potential, and challenges of entrepreneurship arising from these services, and to analyze their contribution to improving the quality of Indonesian language learning. A qualitative descriptive approach was used to explore entrepreneurial practices in the provision of question banks, the creation of assessment instruments, editing and translation services, the development of literacy modules, and writing assistance. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and document studies with business actors, educators, and service users. The results indicate that entrepreneurship in the field of tests and literacy services has high prospects due to the increasing demand for authentic assessments, academic literacy, and writing support in schools and universities. However, challenges arise in aspects of instrument standardization, professional competence of practitioners, and regulations related to academic integrity. This study concludes that entrepreneurship in language and literature education has the potential to become a sustainable creative industry ecosystem for education if supported by capacity building, technology utilization, and collaboration with educational institutions.

Abstract

This study investigates how politeness strategies and conversational structures shape Tom Lembong’s political communication style in the What Is Up, Indonesia? podcast. Integrating Leech’s (2014) Politeness Principle and Yule’s (1996) Conversational Analysis (CA), the research aims to identify the types of politeness maxims employed and examine how conversational features contribute to constructing Tom’s political persona. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the data were drawn from Tom Lembong’s utterances in a 40-minute YouTube interview. The analysis identified seven politeness maxims, with the Agreement Maxim occurring most frequently (22), followed by Approbation (11), Opinion Reticence (11), Tact (10), Modesty (10), Sympathy (5), and Feeling Reticence (4). Conversational features were also found throughout the interaction, dominated by Feedback (12), Turn-Taking (8), Repair (8), Sequence (6), and Action Formation (5). The findings reveal that Tom’s political persona is constructed through the synergy of politeness and conversational organization. His frequent use of agreement, praise, humility, and cautious opinion expression, combined with smooth turn-taking, responsive feedback, and effective repair, produces an image of a calm, respectful, and approachable political figure. This study contributes to digital political discourse research by demonstrating that politeness is not only reflected in lexical choices but also embedded in interactional structure. It further shows how political identities are strategically shaped in contemporary online media, suggesting opportunities for future comparative studies across different political actors and platforms.

Abstract

Since the launch of the “Bilingual Policy for all schools supported by Yayasan Pendidikan Katolik (YPK) Don Bosco KAM in 2030,” schools have debated its impact. Teachers of non-English subjects worry about adapting, while parents fear their children may struggle with bilingual instruction. This quantitative study examines perceptions of students, teachers, parents, and staff at Santo Yoseph Catholic Private High School. The research explores key concerns: the necessity of the policy, its effect on local languages, feasibility by 2030, budget sufficiency, availability of qualified teachers, and whether non-English subject teachers can teach bilingually. A questionnaire with seven questions was distributed to 40 participants in Indonesian and later translated into English. Results show 60% believe bilingual education is essential, 10% disagree, 25% are uncertain, and 5% have no opinion. While over half support the policy, challenges remain, including limited funding, a shortage of trained bilingual teachers, and the need for more English classes and learning materials. Successful implementation requires the Don Bosco Catholic Education Foundation to increase funding and address these challenges to ensure smooth integration of bilingual education by 2030.

Abstract

American transportation history is characterized by significant paradigm shifts, evolving from fragmented local waterways and roads into a sophisticated, interconnected system. This transformation has profoundly influenced the nation's cultural and linguistic landscapes, as expanding infrastructure often sought to supplant existing geographical identities with industrial and corporate narratives. This qualitative study investigates the toponymic evolution of the rail corridor in the City of New Orleans by comparing station data from the 1951 Illinois Central (IC) Railroad system map with the 2025/2026 Amtrak official route schedule. An analysis of the transition from 21 stops in 1951 Illinois Central to 20 stops in 2025 Amtrak reveals a complex stratification of names, where 19th-century corporate eponyms (such as McComb and Hazlehurst, named after railroad executives) are layered over an enduring indigenous and colonial substratum. Despite decades of corporate branding and institutional rebranding (such as the shift to Union Station), this research underscores a remarkable toponymic resilience among names deeply rooted in the physical landscape. The findings indicate that indigenous ecological and hydrological toponyms (such as Shikaakwa or Chicago, Teh-yak-ki-ki or Kankakee, and Yashu or Yazoo) have served as phonetic monuments, outlasting the transient nomenclature of private rail corporations. Ultimately, the City of New Orleans route functions as a moving archive of American pluralism, where the linguistic soul of the land endures beneath the shifting imprints of industrial progress.

Abstract

This study examines the sociopragmatic roles of verbal taboos and euphemisms in the Angkola language, focusing on their function in maintaining cultural diplomacy and social harmony. A qualitative ethnographic approach was employed, with data collected from 320 respondents through observations, in-depth interviews, and online surveys. Respondents represented diverse demographic and occupational backgrounds within the Angkola-speaking regions of North Sumatra. To analyze the data, the study applied thematic analysis, categorizing expressions based on domains such as kinship, religion, body, social status, and supernatural beliefs. The findings reveal a high level of awareness about verbal taboos within the Angkola community, yet these practices are under threat due to the impact of globalization and technological advancements. The research identifies key challenges in the transmission of these cultural norms to younger generations, who are increasingly detached from traditional linguistic practices. The implications of this study emphasize the need for integrating indigenous languages and cultural education into school curricula, as well as leveraging media and digital platforms to promote cultural preservation. This research provides a foundation for further investigation into the role of language in cultural sustainability and offers practical strategies for safeguarding endangered linguistic traditions in the modern era.

Abstract

This study investigates postgraduate students’ perceptions of English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI), focusing on comprehension, participation, and academic English development. Using a mixed-method approach, data were collected from eight postgraduate students through a structured questionnaire consisting of Likert-scale and open-ended items. The findings indicate that students generally prefer an English-dominant instructional approach, ranging from 70% to 95%, while still recognizing the importance of limited Indonesian use for clarification. English-medium instruction was found to enhance students’ confidence and participation, although occasional use of Indonesian helped facilitate the expression of complex ideas. In terms of comprehension, students reported better understanding when English was used, supported by strategic code-switching. Furthermore, EMI significantly contributes to the development of academic English skills, including vocabulary, writing, and communication. Overall, a balanced and flexible approach to EMI is recommended to optimize both language development and learning effectiveness in postgraduate contexts.

Abstract

Indonesian as the national language has so far experienced very rapid development so that it is in great demand from other countries. This development has made Indonesian ready to become an international communication tool. In order to become an international language, it is necessary to introduce Indonesian with interesting learning. Interesting learning by designing innovative teaching materials. Teaching materials for listening, reading, writing and speaking language skills for level A1. In addition, BIPA teaching materials take advantage of existing cultures in Indonesia by introducing Indonesian characteristics to foreign speakers in the hope that this will attract them to learn Indonesian. This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. By describing teaching materials for Indonesian language skills, it will increase learning knowledge for BIPA teachers.

Abstract

Introduction to Indonesian Language for Foreign Speakers (ILFS) through materials, strategies and techniques in teaching is a Community Service Activities (CSA) which was aimed to provide training and introduction to ILFS in West Aceh District, Aceh Province. This activity was carried out on 23 to 25 May, 2022 with the theme “Technical Guidance and Introduction the Basics of ILFS Teaching for Lecturers, Teacher Candidates, and ILFS Activists”. For the theme “Materials, Strategies and Techniques in Teaching ILFS” delivered by Jamaluddin Nasution was held on 24 May 2022 from 08.00 A.M. – 5.00 P.M. The ILFS teaching materials provided were: 1) opening class; 2) compiling syllabus and lesson plans; 3) culture and tourism in teaching ILFS; 4) choosing the appropriate material; and 5) game materials in teaching. This Community Service Activity was also carried out by donating a book from the author entitled “Culture Shock in Uzbekistan” to the Language Center of Teuku Umar University West Aceh Regency. In this case, ILFS teaching can be used as a medium and a means of linguistic diplomacy to introduce Indonesia to foreign countries. Therefore, ILFS needs introducing to the community, especially lecturers, teachers and ILFS activists. This activity aimed to encourage them to actively participate in teaching ILFS both at domestic and abroad. Thus, ILFS can be used as a medium and a means of diplomacy that helps the Indonesian government to introduce Indonesian language and culture to the international world.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan keterampilan menulis teks narasi siswa kelas XI SMA Negeri 1 Tigalingga melalui penerapan model pembelajaran Project Based Learning (PjBL). Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh rendahnya kemampuan menulis siswa yang belum mencapai Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimal. Metode yang digunakan adalah Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK) yang dilaksanakan melalui dua siklus, yang masing-masing meliputi tahap perencanaan, pelaksanaan tindakan, observasi, dan refleksi. Data penelitian dikumpulkan melalui tes tertulis, observasi, dan wawancara, kemudian dianalisis secara kuantitatif dan kualitatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya peningkatan yang signifikan terhadap keterampilan menulis teks narasi siswa setelah penerapan model PjBL. Selain meningkatkan hasil belajar, penerapan model pembelajaran ini juga berdampak positif terhadap keaktifan, kepercayaan diri, kemampuan berpikir kritis, serta kreativitas siswa dalam menyusun teks narasi yang runtut dan sesuai dengan kaidah kebahasaan. Simpulan penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa model pembelajaran Project Based Learning efektif dalam meningkatkan keterampilan menulis teks narasi siswa kelas XI SMA Negeri 1 Tigalingga dan layak direkomendasikan sebagai alternatif pembelajaran menulis di tingkat SMA.
