Abstract

This study aims to analyze the purposes, benefits and challenges of AI implementation faced by the fourth semester students majoring in English Department during the 2024/2025 academic year. To collect data for this study, the writers employed a qualitative research design, and the data were collected through an online platform survey namely SurveyMonkey to explore the experiences and perceptions deeply regarding AI-based learning tools. The survey revealed that most students have a preference for ChatGPT from the three other AIs that the survey had provided. Blackbox AI being second and Perplexity holding the last place. It also revealed that, even though AI is only minimally used, it’s main purpose for usage is to complete assignments, and most students find it positively helpful, with no participants picking the negative options regarding how useful AI is. Many students agree that multiple skills of theirs have improved, with developing ideas and answering questions seeing the most development. Because of this, many survey participants strongly agreed to using AI routinely, with only less than half saying a partial agreement. Despite its usefulness though, some challenges like internet issues and doubtful results still plague many answers given by AI, and misinformation still being prominent. The final conclusion this paper reached was the fact that AI has now become a prominent tool in many students academic journey and has gained incredible support as AI itself gets more and more improvements from its developers.

Abstract

Indonesian proverbs represent a form of cultural heritage that embodies societal values, norms, and worldviews. The metaphorical frameworks of these proverbs describe how Indonesians perceive and understand reality. However, the usage of proverbs in teaching Indonesian for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) is still limited. This article examines the metaphorical construction of cultural identity embedded in Indonesian proverbs and investigates their relevance for BIPA instruction, particularly at the intermediate to advanced levels, in fostering cultural literacy and intercultural competence among foreign learners. This study employs a thematic analysis approach to Indonesian proverbs by identifying recurring metaphorical patterns. Categorization is used to better understand the relationship between proverbs and broader Indonesian cultural themes. The research identifies seven key metaphorical domains: (1) family and kinship, (2) nature and the environment, (3) social harmony and collectivity, (4) caution and wisdom, (5) human emotions and interpersonal connections, (6) knowledge and experience, and (7) fate and human limitations. These domains show how abstract cultural values like morality, responsibility, and resilience are understood using concrete and familiar cultural images. Integrating proverbs into the BIPA curriculum can enhance learners’ linguistic competence while deepening their understanding of Indonesian cultural identity. With their clear metaphorical foundations, proverbs can serve as effective pedagogical instruments for linking language, culture, and intercultural understanding in Indonesian language education.

Abstract

Abstract: This study analyzes the use of the slang word “kuy” in the daily language of Indonesian society, particularly among teenagers and young adults. Using a qualitative approach and descriptive-analytical method, data were collected through questionnaires from 107 respondents, in-depth interviews, social media observation, and digital documentation. The findings show that “kuy” originates from the phonological reversal of the word “yuk” in prokem language, which emerged in the 1980s and gained popularity on social media around 2014. Semantically, 89.7% of respondents understand “kuy” as an invitation, but pragmatically, it also serves as a symbol of social closeness and group identity, with 57.9% considering it important to express familiarity among peers. The word is most commonly used to invite someone to do something (52.8%) and appears more frequently in social media communication than in face-to-face interaction. Its usage is moderate, with 85% of respondents using it occasionally, reflecting the younger generation’s ability to code-switch according to the communication context. This study concludes that “kuy” is not only a linguistic expression but also a cultural artifact that reflects the creativity and social dynamics of Indonesia’s urban digital generation. Keywords: slang, kuy, sociolinguistics, prokem language, social media, adolescent identity, language variation, digital communication, Gen Z, Indonesian slang.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the choice of medium of instruction, code-switching, code-mixing, level of formality, and language appropriateness relative to learners’ proficiency levels in online Indonesian Language for Foreign Speakers (ILFS) classes at the Indonesian Embassy in Washington, D.C. The study employs a descriptive qualitative approach, with data sources including two Zoom recordings of beginner-level classes, the speech of two instructors, learner responses, observation results, online interviews, and documentation. Data were collected through note-taking, observation, and interviews, then analyzed using the interactive model by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana, which encompasses data collection, condensation, presentation, and verification. The results indicate that instructors in the teenage class predominantly used English as the medium of instruction in an informal register, whereas instructors in the adult class predominantly used Indonesian in a formal register. These differences are related to the learners’ age, communicative needs, and level of linguistic readiness. Code-switching and code-mixing emerged as communicative strategies to provide clarification, translate language elements that were not yet understood, reinforce meaning, maintain the continuity of interaction, and reduce ambiguity. The use of repetition, clear intonation, gestures, and the insertion of English language elements also support comprehension of speech. The findings also show that listening and speaking skills develop more prominently than reading and writing. Linguistically, these findings confirm that code-switching and code-mixing are not deviations but rather mechanisms for negotiating meaning that reflect the relationship between language choice, context, and learners’ communicative competence. Thus, code selection in online ILFS learning is contextual, adaptive, and influenced by speaker characteristics, communicative goals, and the interaction situation.

Abstract

This study aims the depiction of self-acceptance in the lyrics of the song "This Is Me" as a reflection of personal experiences in managing social pressure. This study examines the manifestations of self-acceptance in the song's lyrics, elucidates the psychological processes individuals encounter, and reveals the social significance conveyed through the song. This study utilizes a qualitative methodology featuring a descriptive text analysis framework, underpinned by library research. The primary data comprises the lyrics of the song "This Is Me," whilst the secondary data is sourced from books, scientific journals, and academic articles on literary psychology and the notion of self-acceptance. Data collecting methodologies encompass auditory observation, note-taking, and documentation. The data were subsequently examined with the qualitative data analysis framework established by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana, encompassing data condensation, data presentation, and conclusion formulation. The study's findings demonstrate that self-acceptance in music manifests across several dimensions, including resistance to societal pressure, affirmation of self-identification, emotional transformation, recognition of self-worth, and integration of identity. The song lyrics indicate that self-acceptance is not an immediate state, but a psychological process that evolves through experiences of stigma, discrimination, and societal rejection.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to see how the class inequality described in George Orwell's novel Animal Farm reflects the social inequalities that exist in modern society, and how this novel can help us understand the social challenges that humans still face today. In this research, we used a qualitative method with a Marxist theoretical approach because this approach is considered most suitable for analyzing issues related to social class, power, and ideology. The data we used were dialogues between characters, character actions, and symbolic events in the novel, then we analyzed them using four stages: data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. From the results of the analysis, we found that the novel Animal Farm clearly show the inequality between the working class represented by the animals in the farm and the ruling class represented by the pigs. This inequality is maintained through economic and ideological control, which turns out to be still very relevant to the social conditions we face in the real world today. This novel can be read not only as a work of fiction, but also as a critical reflection on the social injustices that continue to happen in human life.
