Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of rule-based artificial intelligence (AI) applications, such as Duolingo, Grammarly, Babbel, and ELSA Speak, on the English language proficiency of Thai high school students. Using a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design, data were collected through questionnaires and in-depth interviews with 30 purposively selected students who actively used AI-based language learning tools. The quantitative findings show that AI usage has a significant yet limited impact, explaining 13.8% of the variance in students’ English-speaking ability. Qualitative results revealed that students perceived AI applications as helpful for improving grammar and pronunciation, though less effective for complex language tasks requiring contextual understanding. Although the sample size restricts generalizability, this study highlights the potential of AI as a complementary tool in English learning and underscores the importance of aligning AI use with pedagogical strategies suited to the Thai educational and cultural context.

Abstract

This study examines the sociopragmatic roles of verbal taboos and euphemisms in the Angkola language, focusing on their function in maintaining cultural diplomacy and social harmony. A qualitative ethnographic approach was employed, with data collected from 320 respondents through observations, in-depth interviews, and online surveys. Respondents represented diverse demographic and occupational backgrounds within the Angkola-speaking regions of North Sumatra. To analyze the data, the study applied thematic analysis, categorizing expressions based on domains such as kinship, religion, body, social status, and supernatural beliefs. The findings reveal a high level of awareness about verbal taboos within the Angkola community, yet these practices are under threat due to the impact of globalization and technological advancements. The research identifies key challenges in the transmission of these cultural norms to younger generations, who are increasingly detached from traditional linguistic practices. The implications of this study emphasize the need for integrating indigenous languages and cultural education into school curricula, as well as leveraging media and digital platforms to promote cultural preservation. This research provides a foundation for further investigation into the role of language in cultural sustainability and offers practical strategies for safeguarding endangered linguistic traditions in the modern era.

Abstract

Since the launch of the “Bilingual Policy for all schools supported by Yayasan Pendidikan Katolik (YPK) Don Bosco KAM in 2030,” schools have debated its impact. Teachers of non-English subjects worry about adapting, while parents fear their children may struggle with bilingual instruction. This quantitative study examines perceptions of students, teachers, parents, and staff at Santo Yoseph Catholic Private High School. The research explores key concerns: the necessity of the policy, its effect on local languages, feasibility by 2030, budget sufficiency, availability of qualified teachers, and whether non-English subject teachers can teach bilingually. A questionnaire with seven questions was distributed to 40 participants in Indonesian and later translated into English. Results show 60% believe bilingual education is essential, 10% disagree, 25% are uncertain, and 5% have no opinion. While over half support the policy, challenges remain, including limited funding, a shortage of trained bilingual teachers, and the need for more English classes and learning materials. Successful implementation requires the Don Bosco Catholic Education Foundation to increase funding and address these challenges to ensure smooth integration of bilingual education by 2030.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of comic media in learning Indonesian for Foreign Speakers (BIPA). One of the main challenges in BIPA learning is the low motivation of participants. This lack of motivation is often caused by the monotonous classroom atmosphere. To increase learning motivation, an interesting and innovative approach is needed, especially for teenage and early adult participants. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method with a case study approach. The research subjects were beginner level participants of the Indonesian for Foreign Speakers Program (BIPA) at Prima University Medan, while the research object was the use of comic media in BIPA learning. The results showed that comic media can be used effectively to support BIPA learning objectives. Comics are able to facilitate the learning of listening, speaking, reading, and grammar, while creating a more pleasant classroom atmosphere. In addition to entertaining and attracting participants’ interest, comics also have various other benefits in BIPA learning. It is recommended for practitioners to continue to develop and integrate comic media into BIPA learning materials.

Abstract

This study investigates the psycholinguistic factors that influence junior high school students' ability to communicate in English, focusing on emotional and cognitive barriers that impede speaking performance. While numerous studies have examined speaking difficulties among university students, research on younger learners particularly junior high school students remains limited. This study addresses that gap by exploring the challenges faced by seventh-grade students at SMP Nasrani 5 Medan. Employing a descriptive qualitative design, data were collected through classroom observations and in-depth interviews with selected students and teachers. The findings reveal that affective factors, such as fear of making mistakes, embarrassment, and anxiety, are the most dominant barriers to speaking English. Additional obstacles include overreliance on internal monitoring of grammar, limited vocabulary, and insufficient sentence construction skills. The study also highlights the importance of a supportive learning environment: strategies such as relaxed classroom settings, the use of engaging media like songs, and teacher encouragement were found to reduce psychological resistance and enhance students’ willingness to speak. These insights have practical implications for English language teaching, particularly in developing approaches that address emotional as well as linguistic challenges in early-stage language learners.

Abstract

This research entitles “The Analysis of Difficulties of Indonesian  Language for Foreign Speakers (ILFS) Students in Samarkand State Institute of Foreign Languages, Uzbekistan toward 4 Language Skills”. There are some language skills, i.e.; (1) listening skills), (2) speaking skills, (3) reading skills, and (4) writing skills.These language skills are the basic of language uses. As a whole, the difficulties faced by students vary, such as intelligence physical and psychologist factors; intelligence, talent, interest, motivation, and ways of learning) and non-intelligence factors. There are internal and external factors as well (family, school, society factors). This study is to know; (1) what the most difficult language skills students understand, (2) the reasons of students at the difficulties in the language skills, and (3) how the students face their difficulties. The method of this study is descriptive, conducted in ILFS class of English Program and Translation Program at Samarkand State Institute of Foreign Languages, Uzbekistan. The numbers of students are 35 (9 males and 26 females). The time of this study was semester II in 2019, and data was taken in March 2019. Technic of collecting data is using test and interview as well as the evaluation sheet in semester I as the diagnostic data of students’ difficulties toward 4 language skills. Data analysis consists of qualitative and quantitative. The lowest average mark is of listening (61.68), speaking (69.07), writing (71.89), and reading (76.29).From the questionnaires’ sheet given to the students, it can be concluded that; students like Indonesian language (85.71%), the pronunciation of Indonesian language is different to source language (65.71%), symbols/letters writing in Indonesian language is not different (80.00%), there is no difficulty in uttering Indonesian language words (77.14%), guidance book used in learning process is good and helpful Indonesia (91.43%), in listening, speaker speaks very fast (97.14%), difficulties in listening (94.29%), there is no difficulty in readingskills (85.71%), there is no difficulty in writing skills (80.00%), there is difficulty in speaking skills (71.43%), the most liked language skills in learning is reading (57.14%), the most hated language skills in learning is listening (94.29%), the most difficult language skills in learning is listening (88.57%), the easiest language skills in learning is reading (71.43%),and the students’ action facing the difficulties in learning Indonesian language is asking the teacher (85.71%). It is expected that the ILFS teaching concerns on students’ difficulties firstly and give motivation during the teaching process in order that the students are motivated to learn Indonesian language.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengajaran keterampilan menulis BIPA bagi tingkat pemula. Jenis penelitian ini adalah deskripsi dengan menggunakan kualitatif. Tehnik pengumpulan data yang dilakukan dengan melakukan obsevasi serta study literatur (Metode Studi literatur adalah serangkaian kegiatan yang berkenaan dengan metode pengumpulan data pustaka, membaca dan mencatat, serta mengelolah. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, maka diperoleh data bahwa pengaruh dalam pengajaran Menulis bagi Penutur BIPA sangat berdampak dengan keberhasilan pembelajaran Bahasa Indonesia. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian mengenai pengaruh pengajaran menulis bagi BIPA tingkat Pemula adalah Menggunakan media digitalisasi pembelajaran melalui metode langsung (luring) dan google classroom Penutur asing dapat menciptakan suatu tulisan dengan media pulpen dan kertas yang berisi tentang pengalaman secarap pribadi. Ada empat ketrampilan berbahasaMembaca, Menulis, Menyimak dan Berbicara. Seorang pemelajar BIPA harus mampu menguasai 4 Keterampilan dalam berbahasa, dengan tujuan agar memudahkan kemahiran dan pemahaman terhadap bahasa itu sendiri, misalnya bahasa Indonesia. Bahasa Indonesia merupakan bahasa yang menarik, bahasa yang mudah diucapkan dan bahasa yang mudah dipahami. Melalui keterampilan menulis penutur BIPA akan memudahkan dalam kemahiran dalam berkomunikasi menggunakan Bahasa Indonesia.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan penggunaan media digital dalam pembelajaran keterampilan berbicara bagi pembelajar BIPA. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode deskriptif kualitatif. Sumber data penelitian ini adalah informan, dokumen, dan catatan hasil observasi. Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan observasi, wawancara, dan analisis dokumen. Validitas data dalam penelitian ini diuji dengan triangulasi metode, triangulasi sumber data, dan review informan. Teknik analisis data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah teknik analisis interaktif. Hasil penelitian ini adalah media digital dapat digunakan secara efektif untuk memacu pemelajar BIPA melatih keterampilan berdialog maupun bermonolog dengan cara menceritakan kembali pelajaran yang telah mereka simak secara daring untuk menambah pemahaman.

Abstract

Penerapan kaidah tata bahasa dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Indonesia bagi Penutur Asing (BIPA) memiliki peran penting dalam mempelajari dan menggunakan bahasa Indonesia dengan benar. Penelitian ini membahas mengenai penerapan kaidah tata bahasa dalam bahan ajar BIPA tingkat pemula. Dalam penelitian ini, metode yang digunakan adalah studi literatur dengan mengumpulkan informasi dari sumber-sumber yang relevan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pemahaman yang kuat tentang kaidah tata bahasa menjadi dasar yang penting dalam menguasai bahasa Indonesia sebagai bahasa kedua. Penerapan kaidah tata bahasa melalui latihan dan aktivitas komunikatif dapat memperkuat pemahaman dan kemampuan berkomunikasi para pembelajar BIPA. Melalui pemahaman yang baik terhadap kaidah tata bahasa, Pemelajar BIPA dapat menyampaikan pesan dengan jelas dan tepat serta membangun kemampuan berbicara, membaca, menulis, dan memahami bahasa Indonesia secara keseluruhan. Diharapkan bahwa pemelajar BIPA akan memperoleh pemahaman yang lebih baik tentang pentingnya penerapan kaidah tata bahasa dalam pembelajaran bahasa Indonesia tingkat pemula, yang akan membantu mereka berkomunikasi dengan lebih percaya diri dan efektif dalam bahasa Indonesia serta melanjutkan pembelajaran bahasa Indonesia ke tingkat yang lebih tinggi.

Abstract

This study investigates the perceptions of 10th-grade students at SMAS Harapan Mandiri concerning the use of digital flashcards in English vocabulary acquisition. Recognizing vocabulary as a cornerstone of language proficiency, the research employed a qualitative descriptive methodology, collecting data through questionnaires completed by 22 students to explore their cognitive, affective, and psychomotor responses. The findings reveal that the majority of students hold favorable views toward digital flashcards, perceiving them as effective tools that enhance understanding, facilitate retention of vocabulary, and sustain motivation during the learning process. Students particularly valued the interactive and visually appealing design of digital flashcards, noting that features such as colorful layouts and engaging formats contribute to improved concentration and active participation in classroom activities. Nevertheless, the study also highlights that students’ independent use of digital flashcards outside the classroom remains limited. Contributing factors include a continued preference for traditional learning methods—such as handwritten notes and printed materials—as well as practical barriers, notably limited access to digital devices and unreliable internet connectivity at home. Despite these challenges, the integration of digital flashcards aligns well with established theories of multimedia learning and student-centered instruction by promoting active engagement and intrinsic motivation. In conclusion, digital flashcards represent a valuable pedagogical tool for enriching vocabulary instruction, creating a more dynamic and learner-focused environment. It is recommended that educators incorporate digital flashcards systematically into their teaching practices and encourage students to utilize them for autonomous study. Further research is warranted to identify strategies that could enhance students’ motivation and capacity to engage with digital learning tools independently, thereby maximizing their potential benefits for language learning.
