Abstract

The management of border areas plays a strategic role in maintaining Indonesia's sovereignty and national stability. As an archipelagic state with extensive land and maritime borders, Indonesia faces complex challenges such as transnational threats, smuggling activities, human trafficking, maritime piracy, and potential territorial conflicts. This article analyzes national security strategies in border management through the integration of public policy and state defense. The study adopts a descriptive qualitative approach using literature review methods, emphasizing the synergy between military defense, defense diplomacy, advanced technology (such as artificial intelligence, drones, and satellites), and economic-social policies. The findings reveal that the application of AI-based surveillance systems and big data analytics enhances early detection capabilities against border threats. Moreover, the development of border economic zones and community empowerment programs such as MSMEs, education, and healthcare contribute to strengthening socio-economic stability and preventing local communities from engaging in illegal activities. The study also highlights the importance of international cooperation, both through bilateral agreements and regional forums such as ASEAN, in strengthening cross-border surveillance systems. With a comprehensive and collaborative approach, border management serves not only as an instrument of defense but also as an integral part of national development. This research is expected to offer strategic recommendations for improving Indonesia’s border policy amidst the ongoing shifts in global geopolitical dynamics

Abstract

Apart from being used to observe hydrometeorological phenomena, weather radar can also be used to observe volcanic eruptions. Weather radar reflectivity data can describe the estimated height of volcanic eruptions, while the HYSPLIT (Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory) model describes the trajectory or direction of distribution of eruption clouds. BMKG's single polarization C-Band weather radar at the Regional Office I in Medan was able to observe several eruptions of Mount Sinabung. Mount Sinabung is about 50 km from the Medan Weather Radar hence is still within radar coverage. Several eruptive activities of Mount Sinabung can be observed from the Medan Weather Radar, using Maximum (MAX) and VCUT (Vertical Cut) products to obtain information on the height of volcanic eruptions and eruption characteristics. While, the HYSPLIT model developed by ARL-NOAA is used to determine the direction of distribution of volcanic ash immediately after the eruption. The MAX and VCUT weather radar products and the results of NOAA HYSPLIT model for several events in this study show that the eruption height in weather radar observations is higher than the HYSPLIT model and the direction of volcanic ash distribution is different from Volcanic Observatory Notice for Aviation (VONA) observations.Received: 2024-05-24 Revised: 2025-06-26 Accepted: 2025-08-15Published: 2025-08-19

Abstract

Drugs trafficking via Indonesia's sea routes continues to increase, making the Sunda Strait one of the most vulnerable points for inter-island smuggling. Conventional surveillance using patrol boats is often ineffective due to limitations in range, weather, and response time. This study was conducted to evaluate the potential and effectiveness of utilizing Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) technology in detecting and preventing drug trafficking in the Sunda Strait maritime region. The study used a qualitative approach through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) that examined previous research results, national policies, and the implementation of UAVs in maritime security. The analysis was carried out by grouping the findings into four main themes, namely the effectiveness of UAVs in maritime surveillance, technical and operational constraints, integration with national security systems, and institutional policies and regulations. The results of the study show that UAVs can double the effectiveness of surveillance through real-time visual detection capabilities, wide coverage, and integration with radar and AIS systems. However, technical challenges such as battery life, extreme weather, and operator limitations still need to be overcome. The study concludes that the integrated application of UAVs, supported by strong institutional policies, can strengthen the national maritime security system and narrow the space for drug smuggling networks in the Sunda Strait.

Abstract

The North Natuna Sea is one of the most strategic seas in Indonesia. However, the plundering of marine resources by countries nearby poses a serious threat to Indonesia’s maritime security. This article discusses the maritime geopolitical strategy to counter the looting of marine resources. In the North Natuna Sea. This research uses a qualitative approach using a literature study. The findings show the importance of maritime boundary analysis as the first step to tackle the looting marine resources, particularly through illegal fishing. Maritime patrol and surveillance, maritime cooperation and diplomacy, and raising maritime awareness as a strategy maritime geopolitics in countering the looting marine resources in the North Natuna Sea. In addition to that, strengthening the maritime economy also needs improved to realize prosperity the community from engaging in activities looting of these marine resources.
