Abstract

The purpose of this research is to determine the relationship between the Edu-Tourism Ecosystem Model of Organic Waste Conversion in Islamic Boarding Schools and maggot cultivation. This research began by finding a picture of waste processing in Islamic boarding schools, which was further developed by analyzing the feasibility of business and waste processing management. The results of this study offer the concept of eduwisata maggot-based organic waste processing in Islamic boarding schools. This research is qualitative, using a study-case approach, with the object of research being the Islamic Boarding School in Bangkalan, which has at least 1,000 students. There are five Islamic boarding schools that meet the criteria: Al Aziziyah, Asshomadiyah, Nurul Kholil, Shaikhona Kholil, and Nurul Amanah. According to the study's findings, the results of the business feasibility analysis produced positive value both economically, technically, and, to the greatest extent possible, in marketing. The feasibility analysis of the business needs to be supported by good processing management through planning, organizing, actuating, and controlling. Furthermore, the concept of maggot-based organic waste treatment (eduwisata) is integrated by combining tutorial learning activities with on-site exploration activities.

Abstract

The culture of consumption among contemporary Muslims demonstrates that religious expression is no longer confined to ritual observance but is increasingly manifested through symbols, Islamic lifestyles, and consumption choices that affirm particular forms of religious identity. While previous scholarship has extensively examined Muslim consumption in relation to religiosity, halal products, and Islamic fashion, limited attention has been devoted to understanding religious piety as a commodity constructed through everyday consumption practices. This study seeks to critically examine how values of piety are socially constructed and how the mechanisms of religious commodification operate within a Hijabersmom Community (HMC) in Deltasari, Sidoarjo. To capture this social reality, the study employs a qualitative-interpretive approach through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and the examination of community documents. Theoretically, the analysis is situated within a political economy framework by synthesizing perspectives on the commodification of religion, consumption practices among the Muslim middle class, and the expanding dynamics of the Islamic lifestyle economy. The findings indicate that the construction of piety within the community manifests through three principal dimensions: ritual observance, social relations (muamalah), and symbolic expression, particularly through the adoption of shar‘i fashion as a marker of collective identity. Furthermore, the community functions not merely as a spiritual sanctuary but also as a dynamic economic arena in which commodities, including Muslim fashion, culinary products, and household necessities, are exchanged among members. This study concludes that contemporary religious communities increasingly operate as hybrid social spaces where spirituality, middle-class identity, and economic interests intersect within the everyday lives of urban Muslim women.

Abstract

IntroductionHalal tourism offers a range of travel packages designed to accommodate Muslim travelers. Several components support the development of halal tourism, including halal food, halal transportation, halal hotels, halal logistics, halal financial systems, and halal tour packages that comply with sharī‘ah standards. The main problem addressed in this study is the suboptimal use of digital marketing systems as promotional media for halal tourism in Bangkalan, Madura.ObjectivesThis study aims to identify the digital marketing systems employed by the religious tourism destination Pesarean Syaikhona Kholil Bangkalan as a halal tourism site in Indonesia. In addition, the study tries to assess the effectiveness of digital marketing through social media as part of the promotional strategy for this religious destination.MethodThis research adopts a mixed-methods approach. The qualitative component is used to explain the forms of digital marketing implemented by Pesarean Syaikhona Kholil. Meanwhile, the quantitative component is employed to obtain an assessment of the effectiveness of the destination’s digital marketing initiatives. The qualitative analysis uses the EPIC Model (Empathy, Persuasion, Impact, and Communication).ResultsThe findings reveal that the management of Pesarean Syaikhona Kholil Bangkalan has not fully optimized digital marketing practices, resulting in relatively low visitor numbers. Based on the EPIC Model assessment, the average EPIC rate score is 3.955556, in the “effective” category. This indicates that utilizing digital media as a marketing strategy is effective for tourism promotion.ImplicationsThe results provide implications for the application of digital marketing in promoting Pesarean Syaikhona Kholil as one of Indonesia’s halal tourism destinations. There is a need to strengthen digitalization efforts by leveraging social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and WhatsApp to reduce conventional promotional costs and expand market reach. Additionally, synergy between the Bangkalan local government, tourism managers, and the surrounding community is crucial to building a shared vision in supporting the development of Pesarean Syaikhona Kholil Bangkalan as a national halal tourism destination.Originality/NoveltyThis study offers new insights into the use of digital marketing as a promotional tool for halal tourism in Bangkalan. The findings contribute to the development of innovative digital marketing strategies aimed at expanding the market reach of halal tourism in Indonesia. Furthermore, the EPIC Model assessment derived from respondents provides a valuable analytical tool for measuring the effectiveness of digital marketing implemented by tourism managers.
