Abstract

This research presented the stylistic analysis at the phonological level of Rose Milligan’s poem “Dust If You Must.” Through this poem, Rose Milligan beautifully emphasizes the importance of seizing our moment in life. Employing a qualitative data analysis approach, the study identified the five most prominent consonants and vowels, including /t/, /n/, /d/, /s/, /m/, and / ə/, /ʌ/, /ɪ/, /u/, /æ/, respectively. The data is displayed in four tables that show where these sounds appear in every line of the poem. The combination of these phonetic elements yielded words like ‘dust,’ ‘must,’ and ‘man,’ which strongly resonate with the poem’s theme. This focus on how the sounds in the poem connect to its meaning helps us understand the poem better. It shows that the poet chose these sounds on purpose to make the poem more meaningful. In addition, this emphasis on specific sounds can reinforce the themes and messages the poet intends to convey, deepening our comprehension of the connection between phonetics and interpreted meaning. This study has the potential to raise appreciation for literary works and support the development of new theories in stylistic analysis by providing a better understanding of how sounds in poems relate to the theme.

Abstract

Forensic stylistics, a crucial tool in crime-solving, analyzes linguistic features to reveal authorship, truthfulness, and narrative structure. This study applied forensic stylistic analysis to a Jakarta man's suicide note, employing Prokofyeva's theory. The analysis revealed insights into the author's psychological state and motivations, echoing findings by Maulida et al. Key elements examined include clear reasoning, emotional expressions, and the presence of positive, negative, and cognitive emotions. The note's structure, grammar, punctuation, cultural context, and vocabulary choices offer a comprehensive view of the author's mental turmoil. By extending Prokofyeva's framework to a different cultural context, this research demonstrates the versatility and applicability of forensic stylistics in deciphering suicide notes across diverse populations. The study underscored the importance of linguistic analysis in understanding the complex emotions and cognitive processes behind suicide, providing valuable information for criminal investigations and psychological assessments. Through this meticulous examination, the research contributes to the broader understanding of forensic stylistics and its role in uncovering the deeper layers of meaning within final messages, offering a poignant glimpse into the author's state of mind before their tragic decision. Examining disaster reports in Indonesia is critical, as it provides essential insights into people perceptions and reactions to the frequent natural disasters. Disaster reports were examined through its communicative element including attitude to see the viewpoints of the newspaper towards disaster reports. The objectives of this research are to categorize attitudes, explain how attitudes are realized, and explain why attitudes are realized in disaster reporting in Indonesian newspaper, especially The Jakarta Post (TJP). Using Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) as the analytical framework, a qualitative method was employed. The data is analyzed using Martin and White's theory of appraisal (2005). A corpus of 14 TJP newspaper articles on Indonesian natural disasters published in 2021 is broken down into clauses denoting attitude. The results of the study indicate: 1) there are three different attitude types, with appreciation being the most prevalent and having a predominately negative polarity, 2) the attitude realization reveals that TJP is the most dominant appraiser, followed by the authorities, and 3) the realization is attributed to two themes namely self-claimed recognition and neglect of self-failure, and one tone multiple perspectives which means negative attitudes dominantly voiced by different appraisers. The themes reveal the newspaper's concealed ideology points to a narrative of critique and disillusionment, which may shape the readers' understanding of the disasters and the associated societal responses.

This study investigates the language registers used by women’s clothes sellers during TikTok Live sessions, with an emphasis on the specific usage of words and phrases to promote communication in a fast-paced sales setting. A qualitative investigation of live-stream interactions finds that nouns (41.86%) are utilized to offer precise product descriptions, followed by verbs, adjectives, abbreviations, and compound words. Nouns are very useful for expressing product information like stock availability, sizes, and materials. The study differentiates between lexical and contextual meanings, with lexical meanings (60.47%) taking precedence, providing precise definitions that improve intelligibility for potential purchasers. Contextual meanings, while less common, are essential for sustaining dynamic connections with the audience. Contextual meanings, while less common, are essential for sustaining dynamic connections with the audience. The findings emphasize how vendors use clear product information and casual language to increase engagement and purchases. This study suggests that the language methods used on TikTok Lives are highly flexible, combining product clarity with audience engagement in order to maximize the sales process.

Abstract

This research analyzes “Wolf Gold’ group chat using a sociolingustics gender language difference by Lakoff and Coates Theory. The researchers uses a qualitative descriptive method and presented with tables. The author found out that in Lakoff’s features in women’s language include hedges, tag questions, empty adjectives, intensifiers, superpolite forms, and avoidance of strong swear words. In men’s language, based on Coates’ theory, swearing, commands, declaratives, and interruptions were observed. While women used most of Lakoff’s features, some were absent due to the chat’s context. Men mostly used swearing, but both genders showed overlap in using features from the opposite theory, highlighting inconsistencies in applying Lakoff’s and Coates’ theories across different gender. The theories of Lakoff and Coates show inconsistencies, as features of men’s language appear in women’s speech and vice versa.

Abstract

Gender and language is a topic that continues to be relevant among scholars. This study examines the influence of gender on communication styles in a debate uploaded on Youtube titled “Can 25 Liberal College Students Outsmart 1 Conservative? (feat. Charlie Kirk)”. The research is guided by Deborah Tannen’s theory of report talk and rapport talk. This research focuses solely on the first premise about abortion. The participants include five female and three male students, along with Charlie Kirk. Qualitative content analysis was  used, with the dialogues transcribed and manually coded. The results align with the generalization that men often use report talk, while women lean toward rapport talk. However, the findings also reveal that both genders can switch styles depending on the situation. This study highlights the role gender plays in shapping communication strategies during debates. Although the sample size and analysis duration are limited, the findings offer valuable insights into gender communication in formal settings.
