Abstract

This study analyzes the use of euphemisms in the debate of the 2024 Indonesian presidential candidates. Candidates used euphemisms to discuss sensitive issues such as corruption, human rights, and social inequality without causing conflict or harming certain parties. Using a qualitative approach, data were taken from the transcript of the debate broadcast on the official YouTube channel of the Indonesian General Elections Commission (KPU RI). The euphemisms presented were based on Warren’s theory (1992), including derivation, compounding, and blending. The results showed that 15 euphemisms were identified from the debate; 8 derivations, 5 compoundings, and 2 blends, of which derivation was the most dominant euphemism. Euphemisms helped candidates convey criticism and sensitive issues more subtly, maintain their public image, and create a more friendly and non-confrontational debate atmosphere. Euphemisms are essential in political communication, especially in Indonesian culture, which priorities gentle and indirect communication. This study contributes to understanding how language can be used to influence public perception and voter decision-making in important political events.

Abstract

This study conducts a feminist stylistic analysis of Little Mix's song "Salute" within the theoretical framework proposed by Sara Mills. Utilizing Mills's three-level structure outlined in "Feminist Stylistics", the study employs a descriptive-qualitative methodology inspired by Creswell's theory. The primary focus is to explore the representation of women's empowerment in the song. Analysis occurs at the levels of word, phrase/sentence, and discourse, connecting linguistic choices to feminist themes. The word-level analysis uncovers generic pronouns and nouns such as "you," "we," "ladies," "women," "sisters," "warriors," and "queens," emphasizing a collective female identity. At the phrase level, nine metaphors and three transitivity processes (material, mental, and relational) highlight the multifaceted aspects of empowerment. Discourse-level analysis reveals characterization and focalization, providing deeper insights into the characters' perspectives in the song. Overall, the linguistic choices in the song, as identified through the three-level analysis, consistently align with feminist principles, emphasizing women's empowerment as a central theme. Analisis tingkat kata mengungkapkan kata ganti dan kata benda generik seperti "you," "we," "ladies," "women," "sisters," "warriors," dan "queens," menekankan identitas perempuan kolektif.

Abstract

This study analyzes Ava Max's "Not Your Barbie Girl" using a feminist stylistic analysis approach with Sara Mills’ Theory, focusing on its message of women's liberation and rejection of gender stereotypes. The qualitative research focuses on song lyrics and language use, identifying how the song describes women and challenges existing gender constructions. The results suggest that the song adopts a strong feminist perspective, emphasizing self-empowerment, resilience, and rejecting societal constraints. The song disrupts dominant narratives surrounding femininity, positioning women as active agents in their lives. The combination of empowering lyrics and energetic music encourages listeners to embrace their strength and challenge oppressive systems. This study contributes to understanding feminism's expression through popular culture, particularly in music.

Abstract

This research focused on the types of illocutionary acts as the part of speech act use in criticism, specifically on Bima Yudho Saputro’s Criticism of Lampung Government that recently gone viral in Indonesia. The objective of this research is to find out the illocutionary acts used by Bima on his criticism. The methodology applied in this research is qualitative research with case study as the research design, and documentation as the research technique. There are 15 illocutionary speech acts in the criticism found, with 60% of representative utterance, 20% directive utterance, and 20% of expressive utterance. The result show the most frequent illocutionary speech act found in the data is representative. The researchers found the criticism indicates that Bima, the critic, mostly used his words to affirm the truth of a claim he made about something in his criticism. Cutting (2002: 17) provided evidence to support this conclusion when he said that representative speech or utterance are performances in which the speaker's beliefs are expressed through the use of language.

Abstract

This study examines the phonetic and stylistic elements of "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen, a song renowned for its distinctive structure and complex themes. It redirects attention from the previously explored cultural, narrative, and biographical elements to investigate the overlooked phonological characteristics that contribute to its aesthetic and emotional resonance. Employing a qualitative methodology, the song’s lyrics were transcribed phonetically using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) to identify dominant consonants and vowels. The results indicate that consonants such as /d/, /s/, /l/, and /n/, along with vowels such as /ɪ/, /ə/, and /aɪ/, play a crucial role in defining the sound quality of the lyrics. These phonological features enhance the song's musicality while emphasizing its narrative tension and emotional depth. The interplay of these sounds creates a dynamic auditory experience that aligns with the song’s shifting emotional landscapes. The study concludes that the phonological elements in Bohemian Rhapsody function as integral carriers of meaning, enriching its thematic and emotional layers. This research bridges linguistic analysis with musical narrative, demonstrating how phono-stylistics can uncover the deeper aspects of iconic musical texts and fostering interdisciplinary dialogue in linguistics, musicology, and cultural studies. The findings imply that similar approaches can be applied to other complex musical compositions, opening new avenues for analyzing the interplay between language and music in various cultural contexts

Abstract

This study investigates the language registers employed by women’s clothing sellers during TikTok Live sessions, emphasizing the specific words and phrases to promote communication in a fast-paced sales environment. Through qualitative investigation of live-stream interactions, the study finds that nouns (41.86%) are predominantly used to provide detailed product descriptions, followed by verbs, adjectives, abbreviations, and compound words. Nouns convey information about stock availability, sizes, and materials.  The study differentiates between lexical and contextual meanings, with lexical meanings (60.47%) taking precedence, providing precise definitions that improve intelligibility for potential purchasers. Lexical meanings enhance clarity and understanding for potential buyers, while contextual meanings, though less frequent, are vital for maintaining dynamic interaction with the audience. These findings highlight the sellers' strategic use of clear product descriptions and conversational language to boost audience engagement and drive sales. This study suggests that the language strategies used on TikTok Live Sessions are adaptable, effectively balancing product clarity with audience interaction to optimize the sales process.

Abstract

Suicide notes are powerful pieces of evidence in suicide cases that left by individuals who commit suicide or who intend to commit suicide as messages, with the purpose is to voicing the victims’ feelings that remain unknown by people when they are alive. This study investigates the linguistic features contained in the suicide notes written by UNNES students by using descriptive-qualitative as the research method and applying Prokofyeva's theory of suicide notes linguistic features. The suicide note is available and can be accessed online. This study aims to analyze the forensic stylistic approach towards suicide notes by showing the characteristics of linguistic features and interpreting the messages delivered by the victims on suicide notes. The researchers classified and described the data in five distinguished characteristics of linguistic features found in the suicide note; clear reasoning, expressing emotions, text structure, grammar, and punctuation. The findings revealed that all the features are present in the suicide note, yet the researchers found that there are different tenses used in the suicide note. The results found only ellipsis in the victim’s suicide note. The data findings in this research may assist future research regarding the study of forensic stylistics, specifically in investigating suicide notes.
