Abstract

This research conducts a comparative analysis of the metaphors used in Alfred Lord Tennyson's poem "Tears, Idle Tears" and Emily Dickinson's "After Great Pain, a Formal Feeling Comes." Metaphor is a powerful literary device for conveying emotions and abstract meanings, often reflecting the social context and personal experiences of the poet. It explores how male and female poets confront themes of emotional pain, trauma, and loss, influenced by gender dynamics. Tennyson's work encapsulates nostalgia and loss through romantic imagery, subtly challenging Victorian gender norms by depicting male vulnerability. In contrast, Dickinson’s poem portrays emotional numbness and self-defense following trauma, reflecting the rigid societal expectations on women to maintain composure despite inner turmoil. The research employs a descriptive-qualitative approach to examine how the poets use metaphors to express their emotional states, highlighting the perspective of gender. While Tennyson’s metaphors emphasize existential longing and an introspective view of masculinity, Dickinson's metaphors focus on the suppression of pain and emotional distance, illustrating the social pressures on women to conceal their suffering.

Abstract

In the digital era, communication through online platforms has undergone a significant transformation. This phenomenon gave birth to a new form of language called Netspeak, which reflects the way the younger generation communicates in cyber media. Netspeak is characterized by the simplification of language structures, the use of acronyms and abbreviations, and the replacement of words with symbols and numbers. In addition, the use of emojis and emoticons further enriches the variety of expressions used in online communication. This study aims to analyze and understand word formation process of Netspeak in cyber media. The approach used in this study is a qualitative approach with a virtual ethnography method. Data collection was carried out through full observation, screenshots, and diary routines without conducting interviews. After the data was collected, the data was analyzed using the Boellstorff concept, namely 1) systematizing data, 2) creating data thematization, and 3) narrating and building arguments. The results of the study shown that the word formation process found in this study includes acronyms, blending, clipping, borrowing, special symbols, combinations of symbols with numbers, combinations of letters with numbers, use of letter symbols as representations, derivation, reduplication, use of Emoticons or Emojis, use of capital letters and abbreviations which reflect the adaptive behavior of language users towards the need for fast and efficient communication.

Abstract

This study explores the application of cognitive stylistics in analyzing Ariana Grande’s song "Intro (End of theWorld)" through schema theory. Schema theory is employed to understand how listeners interpret the song’s lyrics by activating pre-existing mental frameworks. The background of this research includes examining rhetorical devices used by the artist, such as personification, similes, metaphors, and hyperbole, to convey complex emotions and ideas. The methodology consists of a detailed textual analysis of the lyrics, focusing on identifying and interpreting these devices concerning the song’s thematic elements. The findings indicate that the song addresses themes of relationship evaluation, self-discovery, and the intricacies of interpersonal connections. The metaphorical language, melodic and lyrical structure, and vocal delivery contribute to the song’s emotional depth and thematic complexity. The study concludes that the use of schema theory helps elucidate how these stylistic elements influence listeners’ understanding and emotional engagement with the song, enhancing their overall experience.

Abstract

Morphemes used in the poem can alter the reader's perception and interpretation of the poem's meaning and message. It demonstrates the variety of language and the freedom of expression enabled by using morphemes in literature, particularly poems. This study aims to identify several types of free and bound morphemes, such as lexical, functional, derivational, and inflectional morphemes found in William Blake's Poem "Spring." The researchers analyzed the data using a descriptive-qualitative method. Based on this research, William Blake's Poem "Spring" has 27 lines. This research showed William Blake's poem "Spring" contained 83 morphemes. Lexical morpheme was the most frequently found (56%). The second most common was functional morpheme (31%), derivational morpheme (8%), and the least inflectional morpheme (5%). Therefore, a number of morphemes in William Blake's poem "Spring" were dominated by lexical morphemes. This poem emphasizes the poet's desire to explore ideas through the use of a variety of words and phrases.

Abstract

This study investigates the phenomenon of code-switching in the YouTube video titled "Alasan Aku Milih S2 di Harvard Walau Tanpa Beasiswa" by Zhafira Aqyla, an Indonesian YouTuber and Harvard graduate. The research focuses on identifying the types and functions of code-switching in her video using a sociolinguistic framework. Poplack's typology of code-switching—comprising inter-sentential, intra-sentential, and tag-switching guides the analysis. The results show that intra-sentential switching is the dominant type, making up 89.48% of the occurrences. This frequent integration of Indonesian and English within sentences suggests the speaker's ease in navigating both languages to convey ideas more precisely and efficiently. The study also highlights the influence of Zhafira's international educational background and professional environment on her code-switching behaviour, emphasizing her bilingual identity. These findings contribute to the broader understanding of bilingualism in social media contexts, particularly among educated individuals in global settings.

Abstract

This research explored the politeness strategies employed by Indonesian YouTube vloggers in response videos, focusing on a podcast discussion between Gaga Muhammad and Grace Thahir. Using a qualitative research design with a phenomenological approach, this study examines the interpersonal dynamics and the impact of face-threatening acts (FTAs) on public perception. Data were collected from a podcast episode of Voices of Change, where the two speakers discussed pressing social issues, community engagement, and mental health while also delving into Gaga's personal controversies, including his involvement in a fatal car accident. The analysis employed Brown and Levinson's politeness theory to identify strategies such as paying attention to the interlocutor's needs, exaggerating sympathy, avoiding conflict, and looking for consensus. Findings reveal that while Gaga uses politeness strategies to justify his actions and rebuild his public image, Grace frequently challenges his narrative through FTAs, targeting both his positive and negative face. For example, Grace confronts Gaga’s attempts at self-justification with direct critiques, often heightening the conversational tension. The podcast reflects societal expectations of public figures embroiled in scandals to exhibit remorse and take accountability. Despite efforts to apply positive politeness strategies, such as showing interest and declaring common ground, the discourse often shifts towards defensiveness, limiting its effectiveness in fostering mutual understanding. This study highlights the challenges of navigating public apologies and societal expectations, offering insights into the role of politeness in mitigating conflict and enhancing public discourse in social media interactions.   Keywords :     politeness strategies; face-threatening acts; YouTube vloggers; public discourse

Abstract

English learners may be influenced by culture when giving and responding to compliments. This is because they learn language through culture. In this study, tribes have different compliment response strategies. That is why cross-cultural variations cannot be ignored in terms of pragmatics. The aim of this research is to analyze the similarities and differences of compliment strategies and compliment response strategies to see the effect of culture on NJ and NNJ when giving and responding to compliments. This research is a contrastive analysis and uses qualitative methods. The data used are the answers of the participants contained in the questionnaire. The participants are 10 speakers, 5 native Javanese (NJ) and 5 non-native Javanese speakers learning English (NNJ) from 1st, 2nd, and 3rd students of English Postgraduate Program using questionnaires and interviews as research instruments. The findings of this research show that NJ and NNJ are "partly correspondence" in terms of compliment strategies and compliment responses strategies. The results of the research on compliments and responses show that NJ and NNJ use some of the same strategies but differ in the frequency of their use. Then, the research results on compliment responses show that acceptance with amendment: comment and non-acceptance: avoidance are the most frequently used by NJ, while acceptance: appreciation token is the most frequently used by NNJ. The results shows that NJ tended to adopt Javanese culture, which is characterized by "andhop ashor" or humility, while NNJ adopted Western culture, which is more expressive and direct.

Abstract

This study conducts a sociolinguistic analysis of the speech styles exhibited during the interview between Ellen DeGeneres and three-year-old Brielle on The Ellen Show. Utilizing a qualitative case study approach, the research examines the dynamics of spoken language within a popular media context, focusing on how age and social context influence communication styles. The analysis identifies five distinct speech styles based on Joos's (1967) classification: formal, casual, consultative, intimate, and frozen. The findings reveal that Ellen employs a blend of formal and casual styles when introducing Brielle, transitioning to a more relaxed and engaging tone as the conversation progresses. Brielle's responses reflect a casual style that fosters relatability while showcasing her knowledge of complex subjects like the periodic table. The consultative style emerges during educational exchanges, where both speakers engage in informative dialogue. Additionally, intimate moments are highlighted through interactions with Brielle's mother, emphasizing familial closeness. This study contributes to the understanding of how speech styles adapt in response to varying social contexts and age differences, illustrating the intricate relationship between language and interpersonal dynamics in televised interviews. The results underscore the effectiveness of Ellen's communicative approach in creating an inviting atmosphere that resonates with a diverse audience, ultimately enhancing viewer engagement and understanding of complex topics through accessible dialogue
