Abstract

A Textbook is one of the tools used by a teacher to help them convey material to students during the learning process. The research used a qualitative study approach with an analytical research design of the contents of textbooks using the training method in the textbook. The objectives of the study are: (1) to see the contents of the Let's Learn English textbook to the 2013 curriculum was relevant. (2) To find out what kinds of new words are contact in the textbook. (3) Researching and analyzing how the practice of word forms in the textbook let's learn English. The results of this study show that content's of the Let's Learn English textbook for class X is very good. Researchers easily find information about vocabulary in the form of exercises. These findings show that: (1) Content textbooks is very relevant to the 2013 curriculum. (2) In analyzing the contents of textbooks, researchers find it easy to find information about new vocabulary. (3) The form of vocabulary exercises according to the material from the content Based on the researcher about the analysis of this textbook, the suggestion is that the reader does not just read the material in the text, but understands the meaning and purpose of the material so that information would received accurately.

Abstract

Community service activities are a mandatory responsibility for university lecturers as part of the Tri Dharma. This research aimed to investigate attitudes and behaviors towards environmental conservation and analyze the impact of theme-based learning on children in Sei Tuan Village, contributing to broader community-level efforts to protect and preserve the environment. A mixed-methods approach was employed, involving both qualitative and quantitative paradigms to collect and analyze data from 13 children residing in Sei Tuan Village, Deli Serdang Regency. A Pre-Test – Treatment – Post-Test methodology and observations were utilized in conducting the research. The results revealed that 85% of children in Sei Tuan Village demonstrated proficiency in distinguishing between healthy and unhealthy environments. Additionally, all individuals exhibited concern for the environment, including methods of preservation and the benefits of a pristine environment. Notably, 77% of students received comprehensive instruction on categorizing trash into organic, inorganic, and hazardous types. Moreover, 88.5% of individuals articulated positive effects resulting from nurturing environmental affection. Theme-based learning was found to enhance children's recognition of environmental and climate change issues, sparking their interest in learning, particularly in applying basic English vocabulary to care for and protect the environment.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan bentuk, tujuan, dan fungsi ironi yang muncul dalam debat calon presiden Indonesia tahun 2024. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif dengan model analisis isi dan tematik.Data berupa tuturan para kandidat diambil dari rekaman video keseluruhan debat yang ditayangkan melalui kanal YouTube resmi Komisi Pemilihan Umum (KPU). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya 152 temuan ironi yang terbagi menjadi tiga bentuk: 63 ironi verbal, 38 ironi dramatis, dan 51 ironi situasional. Tujuan penggunaan ironi meliputi mengkritik lawan, membangun citra diri, menciptakan kedekatan dengan publik, menggiring opini sosial, serta menunjukkan inklusivitas. Adapun fungsi tindak tutur yang ditemukan meliputi representatif, direktif, ekspresif, komisif, dan deklaratif, dengan dominasi pada fungsi representatif. Temuan ini memperlihatkan bahwa ironi dalam debat capres berperan sebagai strategi retoris sekaligus instrumen politik yang efektif untuk memengaruhi opini publik dan memperkuat citra kandidat.

Abstract

This research aimed to identify the questioning strategies used by debate hosts in Mata Najwa and Kick Andy and to investigate how these strategies influenced the flow of dialogue, issue framing, and the quality of informants’ responses. This research used a descriptive qualitative method. The results showed that Najwa Shihab employed five types of questions, namely opening questions, informative questions, Socratic questions, controlling questions, and rhetorical questions. These question types were used to build rapport, obtain factual explanations, stimulate critical thinking, ensure clarity, and provide subtle critique. Andy F. Noya employed six types of questions, consisting of opening questions, informative questions, Socratic questions, directing questions, alternative questions, and closing questions. These strategies functioned to guide the discussion, clarify political positions, and maintain structured and balanced interactions. The findings indicated that both hosts effectively managed the direction and focus of the conversation, prevented digression from key topics, and enhanced audience understanding of complex legal and political issues. The implications of this research indicated that people could apply effective questioning in daily life to understand complex information and evaluate issues critically. This research contributes to discourse analysis by highlighting the role of questioning strategies in public and political debates, while offering practical insights for hosts, journalists, and educators to guide discussions.

Abstract

Penelitian ini menjelaskan kontruksi peribahasa dalam bahasa Batak Toba. Peribahasa adalah cara untuk berkomunikasi yang terdiri dari kalimat yang disusun secara teratur dan ringkas, tetapi memiliki makna khusus. Peribahasa biasanya mengandung nasihat, perumpamaan, atau prinsip moral. Pelestarian tradisi lisan, atau umpama, dalam bahasa Batak Toba sebagai warisan budaya, sangat dipengaruhi oleh perkembangan zaman. Tujuan utama penelitian ini adalah untuk memberikan deskripsi mendalam tentang tema-tema utama yang terkandung; bagaimana peribahasa berfungsi dalam komunikasi, interaksi sosial dan bagaimana tujuan peribahasa digunakan dalam masyarakat Batak Toba. Data dikumpulkan dengan mengidentifikasi, menganalisis, dan melaporkan pola tema utama melalui penelitian pustaka menyeluruh dari berbagai buku yang berisi kumpulan umpama. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tema peribahasa Batak Toba terfokus pada hal-hal penting dalam kehidupan, seperti falsafah hidup (seperti perspektif tentang etos kerja dan rezeki), moral dan etika (seperti saran, larangan, dan budi pekerti), harapan dan berkat (seperti doa untuk kesejahteraan dan keturunan). Peribahasa juga berfungsi sebagai alat untuk mengungkapkan nilai-nilai budaya dan pikiran, dengan cara yang bermartabat dan simbolis (terutama dalam upacara adat. Itu tidak hanya digunakan untuk menghiasi tuturan, tetapi juga berfungsi sebagai tuntunan hidup (nasihat), dan pengendalian perilaku sosial. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa umpama sangat penting untuk mempertahankan kohesi sosial dan identitas kultural Batak Toba. Kata Kunci: Analisis Tematik, Batak Toba, Peribahasa, Umpama

Abstract

This writing entitled "Moral Values and Cultural Identity in Indonesian Children's Song Lyrics: A Discourse Analysis". This study used a qualitative discourse analysis method to find cultural identity markers, moral themes, and character education values in the language, synbols, and social environment of the song lyrics. Children's song lyrics made up the primary data, and pertinent scholarly sources on character education, cultural linguistics, and Indonesian children's song studies provided secondary data. The findings demonstrate that fundamental moral principles including obedience, discipline, cooperation, thankfulness, civility, and simplicity are reflected in the lyrics of Indonesian children's songs. Children's conceptions of the Indonesian environment are also shaped by references to nature, traditional transportation, social life, and local language patterns, all of which are manifestations of Indonesian cultural identity. It has been demonstrated that children's songs are essential for moral, social, and cultural education. In order to guarantee that moral and cultural lessons are assimilated contextually. This study suggests reviving children's songs in the character education curriculum and including kids in song interpretation.

Abstract

Language is not only a means of communication, but also a reflection of the identity and culture of a society; Through this research on Pakpak Dairi language affixations, researchers invite readers to explore the unique structure and function, the meaning behind each affix which enriches the Batak linguistic heritage. This research aims to describe the types, functions and meaning of affixation. Affixation in the Pakpak Dairi language is the process of a word experiencing affixes, the types of affixes in the Pakpak Dairi language are divided into four groups, namely: Prefixes (i-, me, mer, pe, per, se, and ter) Infixes (-in-, and –um-), Suffixes – en, -i, -ken,), Confixes (ke-en, mersi-en). The function of Pakpak Dairi language affixations is where the four affixations change form into passive verbs and active verbs and the meaning of affixations is where the data from the four affixations are interpreted into a sentence. The method used in this research is a literature study method. Based on the results of data analysis, it can be found that there are 52 affixation types, 29 words for prefix affixation functions, 10 words for suffixes, 8 words for infixes, and 5 words for confixes.

Abstract

Perkembangan pesat kecerdasan buatan (Artificial Intelligence/AI), khususnya model berbasis Transformer, telah membawa perubahan signifikan dalam aktivitas akademik dan pengembangan teknologi. Di balik manfaat tersebut, proses pelatihan dan inferensi model AI skala besar membutuhkan konsumsi energi yang tinggi dan menghasilkan emisi karbon yang berdampak pada lingkungan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengukur tingkat kesadaran mahasiswa Ilmu Komputer Universitas Sumatera Utara terhadap jejak karbon model AI berbasis Transformer serta menganalisis hubungan antara intensitas penggunaan AI dan kesadaran dampak lingkungan. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kuantitatif dengan desain korelasional. Sampel penelitian terdiri dari 193 mahasiswa aktif angkatan 2023, 2024, dan 2025 yang dipilih menggunakan teknik stratified random sampling. Data dikumpulkan melalui kuesioner skala Likert yang telah diuji validitas dan reliabilitasnya, kemudian dianalisis menggunakan uji Kruskal-Wallis, korelasi Spearman, dan regresi linear sederhana dengan bantuan perangkat lunak SPSS. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tingkat kesadaran mahasiswa terhadap dampak lingkungan AI berada pada kategori moderat dengan rata-rata 68,8% dari skor maksimum. Terdapat perbedaan kesadaran yang signifikan antar angkatan (H = 134,892; p < 0,001), di mana mahasiswa tingkat akhir memiliki tingkat kesadaran lebih tinggi. Selain itu, ditemukan korelasi positif yang sangat kuat antara intensitas penggunaan AI dan kesadaran dampak lingkungan (ρ = 0,938; p < 0,001). Temuan ini menegaskan pentingnya integrasi konsep Green AI dan keberlanjutan lingkungan dalam kurikulum Ilmu Komputer sejak tahap awal pendidikan.

Abstract

This study investigates the reading comprehension exercises presented in the English on Target textbook published by Erlangga for Grade XI Indonesian senior high school students. Employing a descriptive qualitative research design, the study analyzes all reading passages and accompanying comprehension tasks across eight chapters of the textbook. Document analysis was used as the primary data collection technique, focusing on the cognitive demands of each reading question. Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy served as the analytical framework to categorize reading comprehension questions into lower-order and higher-order thinking skills, including remembering, understanding, applying, analyzing, and evaluating. The findings reveal that the textbook addresses six major reading comprehension skills: identifying main ideas, locating specific information, understanding vocabulary in context, making inferences, identifying authorial purpose, and recognizing text organization. Literal comprehension tasks, particularly those requiring factual recall and identification of explicit information, dominate the early chapters. However, inferential and evaluative questions appear more frequently in later units, indicating a gradual progression toward higher-order thinking skills. In terms of exercise formats, five main types were identified: multiple-choice questions, vocabulary-based items, true/false and matching tasks, open-ended comprehension questions, and grammar-integrated reading activities. Multiple-choice exercises constitute the majority of tasks, while open-ended and evaluative questions are less frequent. Although the textbook demonstrates an effort to scaffold students’ reading development from basic comprehension to more complex cognitive engagement, lower-order thinking skills remain predominant. These findings suggest that teachers may need to supplement the textbook with additional inferential and evaluative reading activities to better support higher-order literacy development in Indonesian EFL classrooms. Abstract

The library website serves as a digital gateway that reflects the institution’s knowledge identity and service quality. This study analyzes the role of user experience in shaping the academic knowledge image of the University of North Sumatra (USU) Library website. Using a qualitative phenomenological research approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with six informants, consisting of five active students as primary informants and one library staff member as a supporting informant. Data analysis followed the interactive Miles and Huberman model, emphasizing the interpretation of users’ lived experiences. The results reveal that user experience quality, which includes usability, accessibility, design appeal, information accuracy, and responsiveness, plays an important role in shaping how users perceive the library website as a representation of academic knowledge. Furthermore, the SERVQUAL dimensions—tangibles, reliability, responsiveness, assurance, and empathy—function as an interpretative framework that connect user satisfaction with knowledge dissemination. In conclusion, the USU Library website has largely succeeded in positioning itself as a digital symbol of knowledge; however, interface optimization and more intuitive navigation structures are still needed to enhance the overall user experience.
