Abstract

This study explores the perception of an English teacher regarding the use of reinforcement and its impact on student engagement in English language learning. Conducted at SMPN 40 Makassar, the research utilized a qualitative descriptive approach to investigate how the teacher views reinforcement as a tool to support behavioral, emotional, and cognitive engagement. The primary data were gathered through an in-depth interview with one male eighth-grade English teacher and supplemented by six classroom observations conducted over a three-week period. The findings revealed that the teacher perceives reinforcement not merely as a classroom management technique but as a powerful pedagogical strategy to stimulate motivation, reduce learning anxiety, and foster students’ sense of belonging and competence in the English classroom. Verbal reinforcement, such as praise and addressing students by name, and non-verbal reinforcement, such as smiling, gestures, and eye contact, were consistently applied throughout the observed lessons. The teacher also emphasized the importance of applying reinforcement equitably and intentionally, tailoring it to the diverse personalities and needs of students. These insights align with the theoretical frameworks of Skinner, Bandura, Deci & Ryan, and Fredricks et al. Reinforcement, as perceived and practiced by the teacher, plays a significant role in enhancing student engagement and creating an inclusive, supportive learning environment.

Abstract

This research will analyze the students’ perception about flipped classroom. This study used a qualitative case-study approach. conducted at Universitas Muhammadiyah Sorong. The subjects of this research are 20 subjects. The findings of the study shows that three important patterns emerged from the data. The first theme, structure learning approach, includes sub-themes that define the flipped classroom: preparatory aspects, procedural views, and structured processes. The second theme, creating enjoyable atmosphere, is further divided into several sub-themes: engagement through active learning, personalized and flexible learning, and supportive classroom culture. The final theme, fostering independent learning activities, encompasses sub-themes such as learning without direct teacher guidance, developing problem-solving skills, and managing their time effectively. The findings of this study imply that the flipped classroom model can be highly effective in higher education by promoting a more structured and engaging learning environment.

Abstract

This study investigates the implementation of scaffolding strategies in teaching English at SMP Yapend Bungaya Makassar, focusing on teachers’ perceptions and instructional practices. The research aims to: (1) How is the teacher perception about scaffolding learning strategies in teaching English at SMP Yapend Bungaya Makassar? (2) How does the teacher apply scaffolding in teaching English at SMP Yapend Bungaya Makassar?. This qualitative study employs a case study approach, with data collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The subject of the study is an English teacher at SMP Yapend Bungaya Makassar. The findings reveal that teachers hold both positive and negative perceptions toward scaffolding in English instruction. On the positive side, scaffolding is seen as an effective approach to enhance student motivation, foster engagement, and support gradual understanding of complex materials. However, challenges such as time constraints and the need to balance assistance for students with varying proficiency levels were also reported. In practice, the application of scaffolding follows three main stages in accordance with Bruner’s modes of representation: (1) Enactive stage—hands-on tasks involving real objects to build concrete understanding; (2) Iconic stage—the use of visual storytelling and simple multimedia tools to aid comprehension; and (3) Symbolic stage—guided practice that gradually leads students to independent use of the English language through verbal prompts, written exercises, and feedback. The study concludes that scaffolding is a well-implemented and beneficial teaching strategy at SMP Yapend Bungaya Makassar. It provides meaningful support for students to progress from dependence to independence in their language learning journey. This strategy is particularly relevant in the context of the Kurikulum Merdeka, which emphasizes student-centered and differentiated learning. The research contributes to the growing body of literature on scaffolding in classrooms and offers practical insights for English teachers seeking to improve instructional practices.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the quality of the translation of high school students in translating narrative texts. The researcher used a mixed method triangulation research method (quantitative-qualitative). To achieve the research objectives, the data collected is the result of tests and interviews. The subjects of this study were 28 students of class IX of SMAN 6 Maros in class IX of Cross Interests in English. The interviews were given to 7 students who produced high and medium translation quality. The results of this study indicate that the translation quality of students is of very low quality with an average value of 47.46. Only 5 of 28 students produced high-quality translations with a percentage of 100%, 2 of 28 students produced medium-quality translations with a percentage of 68% and 21 of 28 students produced very low-quality translations with a percentage of 33%. Based on the interview results, it can be concluded that 4 factors caused 7 students to produce high and medium-quality translations. The four factors are; a. The factor of interest in English so that it has a lot of known English vocabulary; b. From the habit factor, in this case, the average student likes to listen to English songs and watch films from abroad that use English; c. Some students have studied English outside of school hours so that the student's English proficiency is higher than other students; d. The narrative text that the researcher uses for the test is a text that is very familiar among students because the text is adapted from cardboard films which are liked by almost all people.
