Abstract

This study explores teachers' perceptions and experiences implementing translanguaging strategies in rural English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms in south Buton, Indonesia. This research is a case study where the limit of this research is to focus on teacher perceptions and experiences in implementing translanguaging in English language learning in three secondary schools in rural areas in South Buton, Indonesia. The subjects of this research were three English teachers at three different schools in South Buton. This subject is expected to provide an overview of teachers' perceptions and experiences in implementing translanguaging in some rural schools in an Indonesian context. Data was collected through in-depth interviews and class observation with three experienced EFL teachers at three rural junior high schools in South Buton. The findings reveal that teachers perceive translanguaging as effectively enhancing students' learning comprehension, and the use of translanguaging can create inclusive and culturally responsive learning in EFL classrooms. The study highlights predominantly positive attitudes towards translanguaging, with teachers perceiving it as an effective tool for facilitating learning in linguistically diverse classrooms. Teachers report positive experiences, citing improved student understanding, increased engagement, and preservation of linguistic and cultural identities. The teachers' experience actively incorporated translanguaging strategies, using code-switching between English, Indonesian, and the local Cia-Cia language to enhance student comprehension. While acknowledging challenges such as balancing multiple languages and potential impacts on English proficiency development, teachers remain confident in translanguaging's effectiveness. This research is expected to contribute to the growing literature on translanguaging in EFL contexts and offer insights for educators in linguistically diverse settings.

Abstract

The advancement of learning in the 21st century is closely tied to various information technology tools. Consequently, educators must enhance their ICT skills to improve both teaching effectiveness and student academic performance. This study has two main objectives: (1) to examine how TPACK is implemented in the teaching and learning process, and (2) to identify the challenges English teachers face when applying the TPACK framework in their instruction. A qualitative research approach was used, incorporating observations and interviews as data collection methods. The study focused on an English teacher and students from Class XI MIPA 2 at Senior High School 13 Makassar. The TPACK knowledge of the English teacher is reflected in how effectively technology aligns with pedagogical strategies and subject knowledge. By integrating technology, the teacher can apply diverse instructional strategies across different learning environments, following the Merdeka Curriculum. This approach allows students to learn at their own pace and according to their individual preferences. To facilitate teaching and assessment, the English teacher used Quizizz and Google Classroom for managing assignments and providing timely feedback. However, inconsistent network connectivity significantly impacted student engagement and learning equity. Since TPACK-based instruction relies heavily on online resources, limited internet access became a major obstacle. Additionally, web-based platforms and multimedia materials require a stable internet connection for effective classroom integration. Interruptions in connectivity disrupted activities such as live quizzes, direct assessments, and online group projects, which are essential for helping students master complex English concepts. To address these challenges, institutions must invest in technological infrastructure and provide teachers with the necessary support and training to effectively adapt to various situations and ensure the successful implementation of TPACK in English education. Abstract

This study aims to investigate how the flipped classroom fosters autonomous learning. Employing a qualitative case study approach, the research involved 10 students from the English Education program. The findings identify three key patterns of autonomous learning in the flipped classroom: Pre-class preparation, active learning in class, and metacognitive development. Pre-class preparation allows students to engage with learning materials before class, helping them build foundational knowledge and identify areas for improvement. Active learning in class promotes interaction and critical thinking through collaborative activities, enabling students to apply their pre-class knowledge effectively. Metacognitive Development enhances students' ability to reflect, set learning goals, and regulate their learning strategies. To maximize the benefits of the flipped classroom, educators should design structured pre-class activities, facilitate interactive discussions, and encourage self-regulation strategies. By implementing these practices, students can develop greater autonomy, improve critical thinking skills, and become more engaged in their learning process.

Abstract

Generative artificial-intelligence (GenAI) systems are rapidly permeating language education, yet their effects in multilingual, resource-varied classrooms remain under-examined. This 14-week qualitative multiple-case study investigated how GenAI mediates learner autonomy, inclusive participation, multicultural identity work, and teacher practice in four Indonesian EFL settings (three senior-high schools and one university). Data comprised 24 hours of classroom observation, 76 semi-structured interviews, four focus-group discussions, and 6 752 learner-AI log entries. Reflexive thematic analysis produced four inter-locking themes. AI-mediated autonomy emerged as students progressed from copying teacher prompts to crafting and iterating their own, evidenced by a 142 % rise in self-initiated prompting and increased lexical diversity (type–token ratio =.58). Inclusive voice was fostered through translanguaging cycles, text-to-speech, and complexity-controlled outputs, elevating the unique-speaker index from .54 to .82. In multicultural identity negotiation, learners embedded local idioms (e.g., sipakatau) and deployed iterative counter-prompts to correct Western-centric bias, averaging 2.1 revisions per cultural task. Pedagogical re-positioning saw teacher talk-time fall from 61 % to 34 %, as instructors shifted from grammar transmitters to AI-literacy mentors who facilitated prompt-engineering and bias-hunt workshops. These benefits were conditional on equitable connectivity and critical-AI scaffolding; absent such supports, GenAI risked reinforcing dependency and cultural erasure. The study advances a blended sociocultural–critical-digital-literacy framework, offering practical design principles (prompt workshops, bias-mitigation routines) and policy guidance (minimum-access packages) for the equitable integration of GenAI into language education.

Abstract

Purpose This research aims to find out the impact on the spread of hoaxes on social media, especially TikTok. How the TikTok recommendation algorithm affects the spread of hoax news, how TikTok user behavior, including interaction, sharing and content consumption, is related to the spread and control of hoax news and to find out what impact hoax news spreading via TikTok has on public trust, public opinion and social decisions.   Methodology This research uses descriptive qualitative research methods as the main research methodology. This qualitative descriptive research uses an online survey method in the form of a questionnaire distributed via platforms such as Google Forms. Apart from the survey, face-to-face in-depth interviews were also conducted at a predetermined place. The sampling technique used in this research was purposive sampling.   Result/Findings The finding of this research indicated that a majority of respondent’s report using Tik Tok for 1 to 2 hours, with 26.5% using it for more than 2 hours. The majority of social media users use Tik Tok for entertainment, including dance and music videos (2.9%). However, Tik Tok has also developed into a platform that provides all kinds of information, including hoaxes that can spread widely. In the respondents' opinion, false information is something that is very detrimental if it continues to circulate on TikTok. One respondent stated that TikTok hoaxes have the potential to cause hatred or fear and have the potential to exacerbate political, social or religious conflict.   Implication This research contributed to address this critical gap in the literature by examining the influence of TikTok social media in curbing and filtering hoax news. By conducting a comprehensive analysis of Tik Tok's content ecosystem, user behaviors, and its approach to content moderation, this study aims to shed light on TikTok's role in the broader discourse surrounding miss information and the promotion of factual information in the digital era.
