Abstract

This research analyses how teachers use digital literacy and students' perception, especially using digital applications. The subjects were two English teachers who teach Junior High Schools in Maros Regency. They were taken by using deliberate or purposive sampling. Each teacher was from UPTD SMPN 28 Satu Atap Salenrang Maros and UPTD SMP 14 Tanralili Maros. The research instruments were an observation checklist and an interview. Based on data analysis, it gathered several results; first, the use of digital literacy, especially using digital applications in teaching English, is actualized in the main activity before and after the presentation of the lesson target and is also used as a final assessment of the lesson. Furthermore, the teachers have to make comprehension preparation for digital literacy, which leads to long time preparation. Second, the students in Maros Regency perceive that using digital applications is very important because it can help them learn and understand the material provided easily. They also perceive that using digital applications has positive and negative impacts. However, the students enjoy every learning process using digital applications. They involve themselves during the learning process and complete assignments on time. The findings also show some barriers perceived by the students. They indicate that barriers come from internal and external factors while using digital applications, including mobile phones' RAM capacity, inadequate internet networks, and a gradual understanding of digital applications.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to highlight the ways of an English teacher managing classroom interaction at SMPN 1 Lilirilau, Soppeng. It utilized a case study research design with one seventh-grade English teacher as the subject of this research. The research instruments were an observation and interview to strengthen the data gain through the observation coming with three qualitative data analysis methods, namely data reduction, data display, and the verification of conclusions. The data analysis found the five key aspects of classroom management were utilized by the teacher in English classroom interaction, namely (1) physical classroom design, (2) rules and routines, (3) teacher-student relationship, (4) engaging instruction, and (5) discipline. The physical design of classroom involves a modified U-shape seating arrangement, fostering interaction; rules and routines emphasize attentive listening, hand-raising, and punctuality, with specific routines for movement and learning process; positive teacher-student relationship contributes to a comfortable class atmosphere facilitated by a number of interactive teaching methods and game-based learning; effective classroom discipline remains a challenge, with unresolved issues potentially disrupting learning. These findings effectively lead the teacher to manage the classroom interactively and to avoid having some disruptive behaviors of the students in learning English as a foreign language.

The participants in this research were class XII MIPA at SMA Negeri 17 Makassar. In this study, the instrument was an interview. Interviews were conducted face to face. The samples were chosen using the snowball sampling technique. The first student was selected by one of the English teachers at the school and the next student will be selected directly by the first student. The findings showed that 1) three themes can categorize English teachers' characters: interaction characters, personal characters, and teaching characters. The findings also revealed that students prefer an English teacher who can be a motivator during interaction, that the teaching style can build students' sense of enthusiasm and ambitiousness, and that students can emulate. 2) students feel the impact of the English teacher's character, which has both positive and negative sides. From the research results, it can be concluded that the character of an English teacher varies depending on the personality of the teacher. Apart from that, the teacher's character can also have an influence on students where they can also asses and build students' enthusiasm for learning.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to ascertain if students view speaking practice in English club activities as beneficial or detrimental. To accomplish its research goals, this study employed qualitative methodologies. Ten students who joined the English club were the study's participants. The random sampling technique was employed to pick the participants. Interviews and documentation are the research instruments used in this study. The study's findings demonstrate that students can greatly benefit from attending English clubs to improve their speaking. The students received more positive perceptions than negative perceptions. For positive perceptions, the benefits felt by students are that they can speak English, are more confident when speaking in public using English, their self-confidence trained in English club, register new vocabulary and gaining new friends. Students are also motivated to join English clubs because they can learn more about English, learning more fun, and they want to go abroad and communicate with foreigners easily. Then, for the negative perceptions of some students, the obstacles or difficulties experienced are lack of time exposure and pronunciation that is still convoluted. The challenges faced by English club activities are lack of funds. Although English club members experience obstacles and difficulties, they still have the desire or intention to continue learning English, where they feel there are more advantages than disadvantages.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explain language education development research for improving student comprehension in learning science. This study also reviews the definition of these strategies, identifies factors that contribute to improving students' comprehension, and conducts a computational bibliometric review analysis to determine the efficacy of these approaches using Google Scholar with keywords "Language" and "Learning Science" from 2019 to 2023. There are also explanations for formal and informal learning, as well as educational levels for researching techniques and developing curriculum. The use of technology in media and laboratories is also a significant factor in increasing students' literacy and language impact. Language and student characteristics, motivation, teacher-student relationships, therapy, and psychological conditions are all inextricably linked. We also included information about language barriers for students with special needs, as well as new technologies that improve language learning, in which these can be factors in increasing student’s understanding of learning science. The bibliometric analysis results show that the trend of language research in learning science is decreasing year after year. This is due to the possibility that the focus of educational research has shifted to other areas, such as educational technology, science learning, or educational policy. The co-occurrence analysis results show several keywords that are frequently researched and should be paid attention to, including "language model," "natural language processing," "deep learning," "student," and "language learning." These keywords denote important parameters that can improve the learning experience because they enable personalized, interactive, adaptive educational interventions, particularly in language learning contexts, by adapting content and feedback to each student's needs and preferences. This paper will be useful to educators in better understanding the current state of affairs concerning the importance of language in engineering teaching and learning.

Abstract

Multicultural competence is an important skill for university students so that they are able to engage locally, nationally and globally. This research aims to redefine multicultural competence using meta-analysis approach. The meta-analysis uses key published prominent papers in the area of multicultural competence in the last five years. The published papers are taken as a representative sample in the area of multicultural competence and that are closely related to the lexical item of multicultural competence. The result of the study indicated that this redefinition of multicultural competence encompasses the notion of multicultural competence both in western and non-western contexts. This study has pedagogical implications where university students who engage globally should possess global pre-requisite which is multicultural competence. Thus, universities can allocate both formal and normal engagement programs to foster students’ multicultural competences.

For the sources of errors in the pronunciation of all students during the proposal seminar, researcher found that there was incomplete application of rule is source from omission errors such as letter /g/, /ʃ/, /dʒ/, /ə/, /ɪ/, /ɑː/, /t/, and /h/. The next source of errors false concepts hypothesized is source from addition errors such as letter /ɒ/, /ʌ/, /s/, /g/, /e/, /ɑː/, /u/, /w/, /a/, /j/, and /r/. There is also overgeneralization is source from misformation errors such as letter /aʊ/, /ɔː/, /h/, /ʒ, etc. Meanwhile for ignorance of rule restriction is source from misodering errors all students for misodering did not make that mistake.
