Abstract

Background: Elementary school students in Aceh Tamiang often struggle with problem-solving which negatively impacts their confidence. To address this issue, a new teaching approach called PBL-Reathnomath was developed, combining problem-based learning with real-world math examples and cultural references.Aim: This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of the PBL-Reathnomath model at improving students' problem-solving skills and self-efficacy.Method: A study was conducted involving randomly selecting participants and dividing them into two groups. One group learned using the new PBL-Reathnomath model while the other group learned using traditional methods. Data were collected through tests and surveys and the results were analyzed using statistical methods. Results: The findings showed that the PBL-Reathnomath model significantly improved both the problem-solving abilities and self-efficacy of the students. The group that used this new model performed better on average than the group that used traditional methods. Further analysis confirmed that the PBL-Reathnomath model simultaneously affected problem-solving and self-efficacy, explaining a substantial portion of the variation in these outcomes. Conclusion: While the effect size was smaller compared to conventional learning, the study concluded that PBL-Reathnomath is a valuable and specialized approach for improving problem-solving skills and boosting self-confidence among elementary school students.

Abstract

Abstract

Mathematical problem-solving is a core competency in primary education, yet how self-efficacy, self-regulation, and mathematics anxiety jointly influence performance on tasks of varying cognitive demand remains unclear. This study assessed 180 fifth-grade students from five public elementary schools in Medan City, Indonesia, using three instruments: a 10-item Mathematics Achievement Test (6 LOTS and 4 HOTS items), a 20-item Self-Efficacy and Self-Regulation Scale (10 items per subscale), and the 9-item Modified Abbreviated Math Anxiety Scale (mAMAS). Multiple linear regression showed that self-efficacy (βLOTS = 0.279; βHOTS = 0.261) and self-regulation (βLOTS = 0.214; βHOTS = 0.223) significantly predicted performance on both lower- and higher-order thinking tasks (p < 0.001), explaining 63.7% and 55.2% of the variance, respectively. Mathematics anxiety was not a significant predictor (p > 0.23). Findings suggest that fostering students’ confidence and metacognitive strategies is more effective than reducing anxiety for improving mathematical problem-solving across cognitive complexity levels. Educational interventions should prioritize strengthening self-efficacy and self-regulation to support robust mathematical development in upper primary classrooms.

Abstract

Myocardial infarction, resulting from coronary blood vessel blockage, inflicts lasting damage on the heart muscle. Meanwhile, breast cancer ranks among the most diagnosed cancers, causing millions of deaths annually. Mouse model research suggests that myocardial infarction induces systemic changes, fostering cross-disease communication that expedites breast cancer. Using GEO2R for transcriptomic analysis, Cytoscape for protein-protein interaction (PPI), and EnrichR for enrichment analysis, we explored the myocardial infarction-breast cancer relationship with datasets from GEO. We identified 3,300 differentially expressed genes, including 6 commonly upregulated and 18 commonly downregulated genes. PPI and enrichment analyses revealed RAD51 genes associated with homologous recombination pathways (P-value 0.02032). Additionally, 4 genes (RAD51, KIF4A, DTL, and DLGAP5) were linked to CD105+ endothelial cells (P-value 0.00002216), connecting myocardial infarction and breast cancer. Nevertheless, further testing is needed for accurate results and to support this study's transcriptomic analysis.

Abstract

This classroom action research aimed to improve the reading skills of first-grade students at SDN 066054 Medan through the use of the Reading Spinner media combined with the PBL model. The problem addressed was the low reading ability among students, with many experiencing difficulty in reading and showing low learning interest. Out of 20 students, only 7 had fluent reading skills, 6 had moderate skills, and 7 had low reading ability. The research was conducted in two cycles, each consisting of four stages: “planning, action, observation, and reflection”. The results showed that the average student score after using the Reading Spinner was 80.8, compared to a previous average of 60.41 before its implementation. This indicates a significant improvement in students’ reading skills as a result of using the Reading Spinner. The improvement was evident from the progress observed between the first and second cycles. The use of Reading Spinner media, combined with a PBL approach, proved effective in enhancing students’ reading abilities and engagement. Therefore, this method is recommended for teachers aiming to foster better literacy outcomes among early grade learners.
