Abstract

The waters of North Sumatra, located within Fisheries Management Area of the Republic of Indonesia (FMA-RI) 571, are known to have a high potential of squid (Loligo sp). This study aims to estimate the Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY) and analyze the fishing season patterns of squid landed at the Oceanic Fishing Port (PPS) of Belawan. The data used include squid production and fishing effort from 2018 to 2022, which were analyzed using the Schaefer surplus production model and the Fishing Season Index (IMP). The results indicate that the MSY of squid is 3,886.62 tons/year with an optimum effort (Fopt) of 3,078 trips/year. Although the annual production remains below the MSY, the significant increase in fishing effort accompanied by a decrease in CPUE—from 2.07 tons/trip in 2018 to 1.66 tons/trip in 2022—suggests increasing exploitation pressure. The IMP analysis shows that peak fishing seasons occur in May, October, November, and December, indicated by IMP values exceeding 100% and an increase in chlorophyll-a concentrations (0.60–0.69 mg/L). The positive correlation between IMP and chlorophyll-a implies that oceanographic dynamics play an important role in influencing the availability of squid in the waters of FMA-RI 571. These findings highlight the need for adaptive and ecosystem-based fisheries management strategies to ensure the sustainability of squid stocks in this region.

Abstract

POKDAKAN Usaha Mandiri is a fishery cultivation business that was established in 1999 until now. Cultivation activities are carried out by fishery business actors traditionally with homemade feed, farmers have not used much technology and business analysis calculations. Currently, only 30% of ponds are actively operating in cultivation activities. The success of a cultivation business is not only determined by technical factors alone, such as selecting superior seeds and feeding, but also influenced by managerial and economic factors such as calculating production costs, calculating the break-even point, and evaluating the business's financial feasibility. Business analysis plays a strategic role in determining the feasibility, efficiency, and sustainability of catfish cultivation businesses. Therefore, research on the analysis of catfish cultivation businesses in Pokdakan Usaha Mandiri, Tangkit Baru Village, Jambi is important to conduct in order to provide a real picture of business conditions and as a basis for making more rational and sustainable economic decisions. This is expected to help meet the fish needs in Jambi Province. Data collection on Patin fish farmers was carried out intentionally at the Fish Cultivation Group (Pokdakan) Usaha Mandiri which harvested in December in 10 ponds. This research is POKDAKAN data analysis used to determine the financial feasibility of the business is the Revenue Cost of Ratio (RCR), Break Even Point (BEP), and Payback Period (PP). Based on the results of the research, the Patin Fish cultivation business at POKDAKAN Usaha Mandiri, Tangkit Baru Village, was declared financially feasible to be developed. This shows that cultivation activities provide real benefits and have good prospects for

Abstract

This study determined the effects of dietary Rucah fish meal on the performance and protein efficiency ratio of local chickens. Two hundred day-old local chicks (initial BW: 42.4 g; CV: 7.48%) were raised for eight weeks and assigned to a completely randomized design (CRD) consisting of five dietary treatments with four replicates of 10 birds each. The treatments were as follows: T0 = diet containing 12% Rucah fish meal, T1 = diet containing 14% Rucah fish meal, T2 = diet containing 16% Rucah fish meal, T3 = diet containing 18% Rucah fish meal, and T4 = diet containing 20% Rucah fish meal. Feed intake, body weight gain, feed conversion ratio, protein intake, protein efficiency ratio, slaughter weight, and carcass percentage were also recorded. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA), and parameters showing significant effects were further analyzed using Duncan’s multiple range tests. The inclusion of Rucah fish meal from 12% to 20% did not significantly affect (P>0.05) any of the measured parameters, including feed intake, body weight gain, feed conversion ratio, protein intake, protein efficiency ratio, slaughter weight, and carcass percentage. Overall, the results of this study indicate that Rucah fish meal can be included in local chicken diets at levels up to 20% without any adverse effects on growth performance, protein utilization, or carcass yield, demonstrating its potential as a sustainable and locally available alternative protein source for poultry production.

Abstract

Threadfin bream is a demersal fishery commodity landed at Belawan Ocean Fishing Port (PPS Belawan) and requires sustainable management due to fluctuations in fishing intensity. This study aimed to analyze the maximum sustainable yield, total allowable catch, utilization rate, and fishing effort rate of threadfin bream landed at PPS Belawan. The study was conducted from January 12 to 31, 2026, using secondary data on production and fishing effort from 2021 to 2025. The analysis included fishing gear standardization using the Fishing Power Index (FPI), Catch Per Unit Effort (CPUE) calculation, and maximum sustainable yield estimation using the Schaefer and Fox models. The results showed that bagged fish trawl (Jaring Hela Ikan Berkantong/JHIB) was selected as the standard fishing gear because it had the highest productivity. The Schaefer model estimated an MSY of 4,941.22 tons/year with an Fopt of 1,011.99 trips/year, while the Fox model estimated an MSY of 2,536.73 tons/year with an Fopt of 698.12 trips/year. The utilization rate ranged from 15% to 43%, with an average of 26%, indicating no production-based overfishing. However, fishing effort in 2024 and 2025 exceeded Fopt; therefore, fishing effort control is necessary.
