Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengetahuan awal mahasiswa calon guru Biologi semester dua pada salah satu LPTK di provinsi Aceh, mengenai konsep katabolisme karbohidrat (respirasi seluler). Hasil penelitian dapat disimpulkan bahwa mahasiswa calon guru Biologi semester dua pada salah satu LPTK di provinsi Aceh belum mengetahui konsep katabolisme karbohidrat sebagai pengetahuan awal dengan baik, walaupun konsep tersebut telah diberikan pada jenjang pendidikan sebelumnya. Oleh karena itu, sebaiknya dosen harus mengetahui pengetahual awal mahasiswa, sehingga pengajaran sains dapat lebih bermakna.The purpose of this research is to find out the initial knowledge of catabolism carbohydrate (cellular respiration) for second semester students of Biology teacher candidate in one of LPTK Aceh. The result shows that the students do not have good initial knowledge about the concept although they already got the material in the previous semester. Therefore, it is important to the lecturer to recognize the initial knowledge of students to give the right treatment for science teaching.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to capture pre-service science teachers’ Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) that is demonstrated during preliminary practical context in term of peer teaching program- a course conducted prior to teaching practice. Ten pre-service science teachers were involved in a semester long peer teaching program. Descriptive method was employed with the use of teaching artifacts, observation and self-reported survey for representing the way the participant integrate technology into their teaching. TPACK constructs were defined using relevant literature as frameworks. This study found that TPACK of  pre-service science teachers were still low and is not sufficient for teaching science in junior high school. Furthermore, it is needed several supporting program to prepare pre-service science teachers’ competencies in teaching science with technology. In this case, more sophisticated peer teaching program with better purchase is necessity to improve TPACK competencies of pre-service science teachers.

Abstract

This article is a part of the research related to the development of gamification models to improve critical and creative thinking skills of pre-service physics teachers (PPTs). This case study is a preliminary research to describe the potential of gamification in physics experiments that was involved 25 PPTs at one of the universities in Bandung. The potential of gamification was analyzed from the results of observations, and the monitoring of the physics experiment activities assisted by WhatsApp social media. Through the implementation of gamification, physics experiments can be designed like gameplay so that it was expected to motivate PPTs to be more actively involved in physics experiment activities. Besides that, the presence of gamification can create an atmosphere of physics experiments to be more enjoyable.

Abstract

Solid state chemistry (SSC) concept is abstract yet makes it difficult for students. Considering students’ and scientist conception in designing a learning sequence, it is important to make scientific knowledge to be comprehensible for students. Model of Educational Reconstruction (MER) was adopted to define learning in order to develop students’ Conceptual Knowledge (CK) of the SSC concept. A sequence of learning activities was designed based on the MER.  The purpose of this study was to examine the use of MER in developing students’ CK. One group pre- and post-test experimental design employed in this study. CK on SSC structured essay test consisting of 26 items were developed to measure students’ CK before and after their involvement in learning. Paired sample t-tests were employed and the results showed significant differences in the overall domain-knowledge (p < .001).  In detail, students’ CK categorized into complete (C), incomplete (IC), misconception (M), incorrect (I), and no answer (NA). After the intervention, the number of students that answered correctly increased (57,4% complete and 21% incomplete). This study showed that MER was an effective learning design to develop students’ conceptual knowledge of chemistry concepts.

Abstract

This study explores the basic mathematics abilities of pre-service chemistry students in the specific area of mathematics that consists of four sections, on logarithms, scientific notation , algebra, and graphs. The results of this study were used to develop content lecture of chemistry mathematics course in both chemistry education curriculum and science of chemistry. The participants were 150 students that consists of three level, one level, two, and three, each of 50 respondents. The basics mathematics ab ilities of three level chemistry students were compared with each other. The questions were used in this descriptive study are all multiple choice that developed based on four mathematics concept and related with the needs of chemistry students. The results ind icated that were not significantly differents in mathematics abilities among the tree level of students. Student achievements in basic mathematics consists of logarithms, scientific notation, algebra, and graphs wer, dan respectively. The mathematics concepts that are still difficult to understanding for students were algebra manipulation, transformation of mathematics equation from exponensial to logarithm equation, and understanding of graphs both exponensia l and logarithm equation.Penelitian ini mengeksplorasi kemampuan matematika dasar mahasiswa pendidikan kimia pada konsep logaritma, notasi saintifik, aljabar dasar, dan grafik. Hasil studi digunakan sebagai dasar untuk pengembangan bahan ajar mata kuliah matematika kimia pada kurikulum pendidikan kimia dan jurusan kimia. Sampel penelitian adalah 150 mahasiswa yang terdiri atas tiga tingkatan, yaitu tingkat 1, 2, dan 3 yang masing-masing 50 orang. Kemampuan konsep dasar matematik dari tiga tingkatan akan diperbandingan satu sama lain. Instrumen yang digunakan pada metode deskriptif ini berupa tes pilihan ganda yang dikembangkan berdasarkan konsep matematika yang diukur dan relevan dengan kebutuhan mahasiswa kimia. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa perbandingan kemampuan dasar matematik antara tiga tingkatan mahasiswa tidak memberikan perbedaan yang signifikant pada sejumlah konsep matematik yang bersesuaian dan nilai total. Untuk itu, kemampuan mahasiswa pendidikan kimia secara rata-rata pada konsep logaritma, notasi saintifik, aljabar, dan grafik berturut-turut adalah 58,6; 66,3; 51,2; dan 32,8. Konsep dasar matematik yang masih sukar dipahami adalah mengubah bentuk persamaan eksponensial ke bentuk logoritma, distribusi persamaan logaritma, hukum dasar aljabar, aritmetika bilangan dalam notasi saintifik, grafik persamaan eksponensial, dan grafik persamaan logaritma.

Abstract

This research is part of a series of research and development to improve the mastery learning model of prospective elementary school teachers in science and pembelajarannya.Model learning concepts developed in this research is the learning model that integrates two different courses are semester courses the concept of science and science education. Scenario learning is done in four phases, namely: (1). Modeling phase, (2) phase of discussion, (3). Enrichment phase, and (4) peer learning phase. The study was conducted on students of teacher candidates in two PGSD who take shelter in the Indonesian Education University of PGSD X sekota with the University and PGSD Y berdomosili in other cities within the same province.Subjects consisted of 25 students in PGSD X prospective teachers and 26 student teacher candidates at PGSD Y. The material consists of three pairs of research topics Magnet-Process Skills Science, Electrical-assessment in learning science and food-Thematic Learning. The research instrument used in the form of multiple choice tests and Description. Analysis of data using <g> dinormalisir gain from Hake. Research shows <g> PGSD X student teacher candidates related to science process skills and assessment including the classification was 0.57 ± 0.10 and high classification in thematic learning that is equal to 0.70 ± 0.14, whereas <g> student-teacher candidates PGSD Y including the classification is to Skills Assessment Process science and is equal to 0.68 ± 0.07, and medium for learning thematic classification that is equal to 0.53 ± 0.20. From <g> acquisition can be concluded that student teacher candidates PGSD PGSD Y better than X in Science Process Skills - Assessment, but lower in the Thematic learning.   Key words: learning model, prospective teachers, science process skills, assessment, thematic.

Abstract

Some previous studies have shown that electricity and magnetism is one of the concepts of abstract, difficult, and complex. The purpose of the research illustrates the difficulties of academic cross-level physics education students on magnetic electrical concepts. Research used qualitative descriptive methods. The number of research samples is 103 students consisting of 73 the third year Bachelor?s Students of Physics Education and 30 Master?s Students of Physics Education in one of State University in Bandung City. Research instruments used essay-shaped tests and interview guides. Data collection was conducted by giving essay test adapted from Electromagnetic Concept Inventory test consisting of four major subconcepts namely: electrostatic, magnetics, electromagnetic induction and electromagnetic waves.  Data analysis was conducted by analyzing the test result data via the answer scale section and analysis of the interview results. The results of the study show interesting thing that the electrostatic subconcept is 3% for Bachelor?s Students of Physics Education and 6% for Master?s Students of Physics Education that answered questions correctly on the concept. In the sub-concept of electromagnetic waves, 7% of Bachelor?s Students of Physics Education and 6% for Master?s Students of Physics Education that answered correctly questions on the concept. The results indicate that most students ' cross-academic level difficulties were on electrostatic sub-concepts and electromagnetic waves that categorized the basic and upper concepts in magnetic electrical concepts. The results of the study give implications that the need to strengthen basic concepts and appropriate learning strategy in teaching the concept of magnetic electricity.

Abstract

Abstrak: Model Virtual Laboratory Fisika Modern untuk Meningkatkan Disposisi Kritis Calon Guru. Penulis mengembangkan laboratorium visual untuk pembelajaran fisika modern. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui keefektifan model laboratorium virtual fisika modern pada disposisi berpikir kritis mahasiswa. Sebanyak 64 mahasiswa yang terbagi dalam kelompok eksperimen dan kelompok kontrol dilibatkan dalam penelitian ini. Instrument penelitian menggunakan uji disposisi berpikir kritis yang terintegrasikan dengan penguasaan konsep-konsep fisika modern. Data dianalisa menggunakan uji “mean-difference” dan “normalized gain scores”. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian dapat disimpulkan bahwa model laboratorium virtual fisika modern efektif meningkatkan disposisi befikir kritis mahasiswa. This study was aimed to reveal the effectiveness of the modern physics virtual laboratory model on the students critical thinking disposition. Sixty-four students divided into two groups, the experimental and control groups, were involved in this study. An instrument used to test the students’ critical thinking disposition was utilized, integrated with the mastery of modern physics concepts. The data were analyzed using the mean difference test and normalized gain scores. The findings showed that the modern physics virtual laboratory model was effective to improve the students’ critical thinking disposition. Abstract

Abstract: Implementation of Multiple-Representation-Based Instructions to Improve the Mastery of Quantum Physics Concepts. This study aimed to design and investigate the role of multiple-representation-based instructions in the improvement of student teachers’ quantum physics mastery. This study used a quasi-experimental control group pretest-posttest design as quantitative part of a mixed-methods study. The subjects were student teachers of physics in the Department of Mathematics and Science Education in a state university in Lampung Province in the 2009-2010 academic year. For assessing the quantum physics mastery, the Quantum Physics Concept Achievement Test (QPCAT) was used. The quantitative analyses were conducted using the Mann Whitney U test. The results showed that multiple-representation-based instructions had a significant effect on student teachers’ quantum physics concept mastery. The results of semi-structured interviews as qualitative part of this study indicated that in the experimental group the students used a variety of representation modes in the learning process and were capable of using the most appropriate one to solve a given quantum physics concept problem. Abstract

This research involved 19 postgraduate students majoring on Science Education at one university in Surabaya who were programming Earth and Space Sciences course. The objective of this research is to measure students? ability in designing a lesson plan for sustainable education on environmental issues around volcanoes by integrating education for sustainable development (ESD) competence. Descriptive quantitative analysis was employed to assess the lesson plans developed by the students. In general, the results showed that the lesson plans were less contextual to support the improvement of decision-making abilities on the environmental issues, the emergence of environmental awareness among students, encouragement to the students to have sense of belonging to the environment, and fostering critical analysis of various environmental phenomena. The results suggest further efforts to improve professional competence of the postgraduate students in developing geoscience learning instruments, particularly related to integrate the ESD competence into lesson plans.
