Abstract

This study aims to demonstrate how a course design approach based on explorative research involving systems thinking can be implemented by recovering Rare Earth Elements (REEs) using Deep Eutectic Solvents (DES). The method used in this research is Design-Based Research (DBR). The instruments used were questions regarding the measurement of leaching samples from results/characterization, short questions about concept maps, and student response questionnaires. Data from measurements of leaching samples was measured using a Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FTIR), data about concept maps was measured by the number of component and process concepts in the context of electronic waste recycling that students were able to identify, and student response data was measured using a Likert scale. Based on the research results, recovery of REEs can be done using DES. It can be shown by a shift in the peak vibration of 497.65 cm-1 from the sample before leaching to a vibration of 449.43 cm-1 after leaching. In addition, this study yields new insights into the perceptions of future pre-service chemistry teachers regarding the possibility of new types of DES in the context of chemistry learning. According to pre-service chemistry teachers, recovering REEs from electronic waste and applying DES are interesting as a new context for laboratory learning. Context-based design of research activities can enhance system thinking and interest in chemistry. The results of study showed increased student’s systems thinking abilities, as shown by the component and process concepts that emerged from the pre-test by 652 concepts while the post-test increased by 1208 concepts.

Abstract

The concepts of differential and integral are important topics in chemistry mathematics courses. Based on the number of subtopics, differential and integral concepts are covered on average more than 40% in chemistry mathematics books. Several previous studies reported findings that differential and integral concepts are still difficult for students to understand. This research aims to evaluate the previous lecture program and propose an alternative learning design to help students more easily understand those concepts. In this study, we developed a practicum by adopting Plomp’s model, which were collecting, designing, trying, and revising the product. The practicum design was developed for heating process of glucose solution. Those chemicals were chosen because the materials obtained are relatively easy, cheap, and safe, so it is very possible to practice it in the laboratory. We used Maple to model the heating process phenomenon. The results show that the differential and integral concepts can be applied to model the heating process of glucose solution by using Maple. This research is limited to simulations. Therefore, the suggestion for further research is to conduct field trials to determine the impact of implementing learning design in increasing students' understanding of differential and integral concepts.

Abstract

Heavy metal pollution in aquatic systems increases the need for sustainable and efficient natural adsorbent materials, and carrageenan extracted from Eucheuma cottonii, which contains O–H, S=O, C–O–S, and 3,6-anhydrogalactose functional groups, offers strong potential for binding metal ions. However, the adsorption efficiency of natural carrageenan for Copper (Cu2+) and Cadmium (Cd2+) ions remains limited, which frames the central problem of this study. In addressing this issue, the method employed involves synthesizing carrageenan hydrogel through alkaline extraction of Eucheuma cottonii and evaluating its adsorption capacity under controlled experimental conditions. The hydrogel was characterized and tested at pH 6–7, with a contact time of 90 minutes, an initial concentration of 200 mg/L, and an adsorbent mass of 6 g, followed by kinetic and isotherm modeling to analyze adsorption behavior. Based on the Findings, ionic exchange interactions between sulfate ester groups of K-carrageenan and metal cations significantly enhance adsorption performance, with the adsorption process following a pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Freundlich isotherm providing the best fit R2 > 0.90, indicating heterogeneous multilayer adsorption. In the Conclusion, the chemically modified carrageenan hydrogel demonstrates effective adsorption of copper and cadmium ions and presents strong potential as an eco-friendly and efficient biomaterial for heavy metal remediation.

Abstract

One of the factors that have become an obstacle in the development of techno-logy to use ocean wave energy as a renewable energy source is the lack of human resources who have expertise in this field. Therefore, in the long term, it is necessary to introduce basic knowledge to the young generation about wave energy and other renew-able energies and even must equip them with important skills such as creative thinking skills. This study aims to introduce students to how to utilize ocean waves as renewable energy while at the same time developing student creative thinking skills through semi-assisted project-based learning. This type of research is weak experiment research with one group pretest-posttest design research. The research was conducted on 31 pre-service physics physics teachers who were taking environmental physics lectures at a teacher training university in West Nusa Tenggara. The performance appraisal data were analyzed descriptively while the test result data were analyzed using the N-gain and the Wilcoxon test. Based on the results of data analysis, it was obtained <g> = 0.725, which means that there was a high increase in students' mastery of the concept of using ocean waves as a renewable energy source. In addition, the results of the performance appraisal data (score > 3) indicated that at each stage of learning, students were provided with indicators of creative thinking skills with very satisfied categories. Therefore, it can be concluded that environmental physics lectures using semi-assisted project-based learning able to improve students' mastery of concepts and creative thinking skills.
