Abstract

Wanokaka (Wn) and Anakalang (An) languages are two of the seven languages spoken in Sumba, East NusaTenggara (Budasi, 2007). The speakers of the two languages live in Mid Sumba Regency within East NusaTenggara Province. Some linguists consider the two are dialects of Sumba language ( All isolects spoken inthe island are considered as one language). In Budasi (2007, 2009), however, Wn and An were quantitativelyproved as two different languages spoken in the regency. Based on the lexicostatistic analysis and Swadesh’sclassification of language, the relatedness of the two languages was 75.5 %, which means that their subgroupingrelationship belongs to language family (They are in two different laguage relationship, but not intwo-dialect relationship of the same family). In Budasi (2007), both languages were hyphotesized originallyfrom Proto WN-An in Sumba Group of Languages. Based on this hyphothesis, this paper aims at describingqualitatively the phonological evidences which differentiate the two different languages of the same family. In this study, the comparative method was applied. The population of the study comprised the speakers ofthe two languages. Three informant samples were selected based on a set of criteria. The instruments of thedata gathering were three word lists: Swadesh, Nothofer, and Holle; and a tape recorder. Two types of data, secondary and primary, were collected. The obtained data were analysed descriptively and qualitattively. This study concluded that qualitatively, Wn and An were two different languages of the same family underSumba Gropup of Languges. The qualitative evidences were as follows: a) the phonological evidences whichdiffered Wn and An, that is, vocal phonemes PWn-An *a dan *e in penultima and antepenultima positionsretained in An; however, in Wn they innovated ›vowel cluster Wn e-a ; b) unidentical vowel cluster PWn-An*a-u was in correspondence with the unidentical vowel cluster Wn o-u and An a-u; PWn-An *a-u innovatedinto Wn o-u while in An it retained; c) unidentical vowel cluster PWn-An *a-i was in correspondence withthe unidentical vowel cluster Wn e-i and An a-i, which innovated in Wn to become Wn e-i, while in Anretained.Unidentical vowel cluster PWn-An *a-i retained in An; however, it innovated in Wn o. It formed secondarychange, that is, highering central vocal phoneme PWn-An *a ›a central back phoneme Wn o, while in An itretained. The whole evidences, then, confirm the quantitative data findings mentioned in Budasi (2007, thatis, Wn and An were two different languages which were generated directly from the Proto Wn-An underSumba Group of Languages.Key words: lexicostatistics, language family, and comparative method.

Abstract

This study aims to develop English for Cruise Line Bartender materials needed by Cruise Line Bartender students of The International Bali Institute of Tourism, to explain how the materials were developed, and to analyze the quality of the developed materials. This study adopts the design proposed by Dick and Carey (2001). The model proposed by Dick and Carey consists of several stages; 1) conducting need analysis (problem determination), 2) designing the model, 3) developing the model, 4) validating the model by experts, and 5) trying out the model (dissemination). The object of this study was the English for cruise line bartender at the International Bali Institute of Tourism. In collecting the data, three instruments were used namely questionnaires, guided interviews, and document analysis. The study shows that eight topics are required to be developed. The topics are getting to know you, setting up a bar, kinds of drink, drink recipe, and taking beverage order, we are sorry, cruise vacationers, and job interview. The materials were designed by following the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) material design involving input, content focus, language focus, and task. Since English for cruise line bartender is part of ESP that is under English for Occupational Purposes, the steps of the interactive data analysis method consist of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results of expert judges' validation were analyzed descriptively by comparing the scores of two raters using Gregory's formula (2000). The quality of the developed materials was categorized as good material. Thus, it can be used as the source for learning by prospective the secretary of Cruise Line Bartender Program at The International Bali Institute of Tourism. Keywords: English Learning Materials, Cruise line, Bartender

Abstract

This article presents theoretical and empirical reviews on the nature, rationale and the implementation of teaching model developing students’ 4C skills in the classroom. It also shares the research result conducted in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) Course of English Education Study Program. This descriptive research was conducted in the form of Research and Development Model by Gall, Gall, and Borg which resulted in the development of 4C-based learning model integrated in task-based learning framework. The expert judgement on the quality of the model proved that the developed model gained the mean score of 4.85 (from 5 Likert Scale) which means that the model was considered very good. The 4C-based learning model is a solutive learning model to be used in the 21st century in delivering TEFL course. Thus, it is expected that the lecturers of TEFL Course implement the model regularly to enable student teachers to obtain the required skills later both in their real teaching practicum and in their future career.

Abstract

Vocabulary learning is one of the essential elements for young learners. This study aims to analyze the planning and implementation of flashcards in Google Classroom to teach vocabulary and analyze the advantages and disadvantages of flashcards in Google Classroom. This research is a case study with an English teacher in the fifth grade of elementary school. Data was collected using a list of observations and interview guides. The procedure for collecting data is conducting online observations in Google Classroom and conducting interviews with research subjects. The data collected was analyzed qualitatively with the analytical technique of Miles and Huberman. The results showed that there were four planning activities: checking the syllabus, determining the text or material to be taught, determining the teaching method, and preparing a lesson plan. Second, teachers do three stages in implementing flashcards in Google Classroom, namely Initial Activities, Core Activities, and Closing Activities. Third, the advantages of using flashcards in Google Classroom are motivating students to learn, avoiding boredom, building student interest, and helping students remember vocabulary according to pictures. This research implies that the use of flashcards to teach vocabulary using Google Classroom can positively impact students, especially young learners.
