Abstract

The abstract nature of chemistry often leads to low student comprehension, a problem exacerbated by a lack of teaching materials that connect concepts to real-world situations. This research aimed to develop a valid, practical, and effective contextual teaching module on the colloid system using Four Steps Teaching Material Development (4STMD) method. The research following the stages of Design, Development, and Evaluation (DDE). The module's unique context is the application of colloid chemistry principles to the treatment of tofu liquid wastewater using Moringa oleifera seeds as a natural coagulant. The development process followed the four stages of 4STMD: Selection, Structuring, Characterization, and Didactic Reduction. The module's quality was evaluated by three expert chemistry teachers and tested for understandability with 63 high school students. The results of the expert validation indicated that the module is Very Feasible, with high scores in content (95.2%), language (85.7%), presentation (93.7%), and graphical feasibility (85.3%). Furthermore, the student understandability test yielded an average score of 93.33%, categorizing the module as "High" and suitable for independent learning. It is concluded that the 4STMD method successfully produced a viable and effective contextual module that bridges the gap between abstract chemical concepts and their practical, sustainable applications.

Abstract

This research aims to examine the integration of education for sustainable development (ESD) values in climate change education (CCE) (CCESD) from an epistemological perspective, namely focusing on history and the development of those knowledges; and an axiological perspective, namely the values that build it. The research was carried out qualitatively using a literature study method, where all documents used as data sources were reading material that discussed "education for sustainable development", "climate change education", "epistemology", and "axiology". The results of the study show that ESD and CCE grow together from human anxiety about an uncertain future due to various problems with long-term impacts, such as climate change. Therefore, both aim to form a prosperous society and intergenerational justice. The two main characteristics of ESD values integrated in CCE are interdisciplinary integration and temporal connection between the past, present and future. In teaching ESD in CCE or CCESD, it is recommended to emphasize some key competencies of ESD: systems thinking competency, critical thinking competency, collaborative competency, integrative problem-solving competency, and anticipatory competency.

Abstract

The merging of adaptive chemistry subjects (C.1) into the IPAS project subject in the Independent Curriculum causes the chemistry content to be non-specific and not adapted to all vocational elements. This has the potential to hinder students' understanding of relevant chemistry concepts in their vocational context. This study aims to design an outline of chemistry teaching materials that are relevant to the needs of dyeing subjects in Textile Finishing Engineering VHS. The method used is Qualitative Content Analysis (QCA) with four stages to obtain and evaluate chemistry content related to the dyeing context. The results show that there are 19 chemistry contents that have been systematically arranged and validated based on the sequence, details, and their relationship to the dyeing context. For example, the content of electrolyte solution, acid base, ion equilibrium in solution, and reaction rate plays an important role in regulating the affinity of dyes to fibers and the speed of the dyeing process. This outline is useful for teachers or education practitioners as a clear guide to integrating chemistry content and vocational contexts into learning or teaching materials. For students, it can help them understand chemistry concepts that are more contextual and applicable to their vocational fields.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the relevance and integration of contextual chemistry content, particularly focusing on redox reactions in the context of corrosion in automotive chassis maintenance, into the vocational education curriculum of Light Vehicle Engineering (Teknik Kendaraan Ringan Otomotif/TKRO) programs. Utilizing the Qualitative Content Analysis (QCA) method, this research examines curriculum documents, IPAS (Ilmu Pengetahuan Alam dan Sosial) modules, and interviews with both science and vocational teachers to identify gaps between chemistry teaching and vocational practices. The results reveal that essential chemical concepts such as oxidation-reduction reactions, electrochemistry, and corrosion science are currently absent or underrepresented in the general science curriculum. These omissions hinder students’ understanding of crucial maintenance procedures related to metal degradation, material selection, and protective treatments. The study proposes a contextualized chemistry material outline to bridge this gap, enabling vocational students to apply scientific principles effectively in real-world automotive settings. Findings from this study advocate for the incorporation of redox and electrochemical content in vocational science education to enhance both conceptual understanding and technical competency.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a contextual colloidal system module with a batik wastewater treatment context that is suitable for senior high school students. The development of this module is motivated by the widespread use of teaching materials that do not fully align with curriculum demands, focusing solely on scientific content without applying a contextual approach. The research method employed is Design Development Evaluation (DDE), while the development of the teaching material follows the Four Steps Teaching Material Development (4STMD) model. In the design stage, analysis and planning of the type of teaching material to be developed were conducted, resulting in an initial draft of the module. The development stage, based on 4STMD, consists of four steps: selection, structuring, characterization, and didactic reduction, leading to the creation of a draft teaching material. The evaluation stage involved feasibility testing by chemistry teachers and experts, and comprehensibility testing with students. The evaluation results indicate that the developed contextual teaching material, based on the batik wastewater treatment context, is aligned with the curriculum, conceptually accurate, and feasible for use as independent learning material. The feasibility test yielded a percentage score of 95.4%, and the comprehensibility test yielded a score of 92%.

Abstract

For a student to gain a deeper understanding of concepts in chemistry, they need to learn concepts at three levels of representation: macroscopic, submicroscopic, and symbolic. The three levels of representation of information are crucial for developing critical thinking skills. But the textbook, which is the main learning resource, plays a vital role in helping a student relate concepts at the three levels. The objective of this research was to assess the display of carbohydrate representation at three levels in ten general chemistry textbooks. In order to examine 120 visual representations, this research employed qualitative content analysis, with five criteria developed from the work of Gkitzia et al. (2020). Criteria C1-C5 include the following: type of representation (C1), interpretation of surface characteristics (C2), relationship to text (C4), presence and nature of captions (C5), and level of correlation between elements that comprise the different representations. Thirdly, the usefulness of the proposed criteria was compared to chemistry textbooks. The results showed that there was a dominance of representations at the symbolic level. Moreover, some of the representations were found to have insufficient subtitles to give meaning, especially at the submicroscopic level. The conceptual understanding of students can be impaired by the dominance of symbolic representations and the absence of visual support for other levels. To ensure that critical thinking is done effectively, this study stresses the need to develop learning materials that incorporate the three levels of representation in a balanced manner. These five criteria can also be used to analyze existing school textbooks and to design new Chemistry textbooks.
