Abstract

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is an integral part of achieving the three pillars of human development: social development, economic growth, and environmental preservation. ESD is a global initiative that encompasses broader issues than those addressed solely by the Indonesian Government a collective responsibility to foster ESD as a fundamental value for current and future generations. This study employed a descriptive research method, using a sustainability awareness questionnaire adapted from Hassan et al. The study aimed to comprehensively assess sustainability awareness among 53 ninth-grade students at SMPN 17 Medan. The primary objective was to outline and categorize the profile of sustainability awareness, focusing on emotional, behavioral, and practical dimensions, while also examining gender differences. Data were systematically analyzed using a Likert scale and validated instruments, aligned with sustainability awareness indicators. The results indicated a high level of sustainability awareness, with emotional awarenessat 89.6%, followed by behavioral and attitude awareness at 82.1%. However, practical awareness was at 66.4%, indicating a potential area for improvement. Female students demonstrated higher awareness (85.7%) compared to male students (73.0%). These findings highlight the need for targeted educational interventions to enhance practical sustainability awareness and ensure equitable participation among all students.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the publication trends in systems thinking within science education from 2014 to 2023, utilizing VOSviewer, Excel, and Biblioshiny for bibliometric analysis, to better understand how systems thinking is integrated into educational practices and its impact on managing complex systems. Analyzing 328 of 880 documents from the Scopus database, results show a gradual increase in publications, with leading journals including Sustainability Switzerland and the Journal of Chemical Education. The United States leads in research output, followed by China and Malaysia. The University of Colorado Boulder and Harvard Medical School are the most productive affiliations. Prominent authors include Yehudit Judy Dori and Jed D. Gonzalo. The most cited document by Grover et al. with 251 citations. Research trends highlight popular topics such as students, education, curriculum, learning, and teaching. However, gaps remain in connecting systems thinking with emerging fields like artificial intelligence, problem-based learning, problem-solving, decision-making, and STEM. These findings guide future research, resource allocation, and strategy formulation to enhance systems thinking in education. Further research using diverse data sources and methodologies is recommended to bridge gaps and improve the application of systems thinking principles. Keywords: bibliometric analysis, systems thinking, science education

This research aims to produce teaching materials on the theme of lubuk larangan using 4S-TMD method to improve students' environmental literacy. The research method used was developmental Research, covering three stages, namely design, development, and evaluation. In the development stage, 4S-TMD method consists of selection, structuring, characterization, and didactic reduction. The instruments used are rubric for selection stage, rubric for structuring stage, rubric for characterization stage, rubric for didactic reduction, rubric for understanding and validation questionnaire for the feasibility of teaching materials. The results of the evaluation of the developed teaching material showed that it was self-instructional. It was easy to understand (85%). In terms of feasibility, the material was very feasible (88,88%). Student environmental literacy can be developed through the task at the end of the learning material in the form of assignments and questions posed on the teaching material which refers to the component of environmental literacy and the context of lubuk larangan. Keywords: teaching material, local wisdom, environmental literacy, 4S-TMD. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpmipa/v23i1.pp162-172

Abstract

This study aims to explain the need for teaching materials in the culinary arts vocational school which will be developed using the 4S TMD method. This research is based on the problem of not integrating chemistry subjects in supporting vocational subjects with culinary skills competence. So there are no teaching materials that are relevant to the competence of culinary expertise. The data collection instrument used was the relevance format between chemical content and vocational content. This type of research is descriptive with a qualitative approach. The subjects in this study were two lecturers of chemistry education, two teachers of applied science, and three teachers of productive culinary arts who acted as validators. The results of this study became the basis for researchers in developing chemistry books using the 4S TMD method on applied science teaching materials for chemistry relevant to vocational skills in culinary skills.

Abstract

The process of generalisation and the formation of knowledge is often debated about the scientific methods of deduction and induction. There is a dualism between the two. A philosopher of falsification theory, Karl Raymond Popper, criticised induction theory and supported deductive theory, while philosopher John Stuart Mill emphasised the importance of induction in scientific reasoning, especially the use of enumerative induction. In this article, the author tries to briefly explain the urgency of John Stuart Mill's thought in science. Using the library research method, using relevant books and journal articles. Through this research shows the relationship between enumerative induction, coherence and generalisation by John Stuart Mill's can be assembled that enumerative induction shows the consistency pattern of individual cases obtained from repeated observations, where these individual cases in addition to being consistent also have coherence with each other so that a coherent belief system pattern is formed and then forms a generalisation or new science. Although this kind of induction assumption has a level of strength of proof that is difficult to refute. There are still limitations to inductive generalisation, namely the possibility that future discoveries will show that our belief in our current conclusions is incorrect.

Abstract

This study aims to dig up informations about the suitability of creative thinking skill indicators in PjBL student worksheets on reaction rate material in the context of making liquid organic fertilizer from banana peels. The method used in this study is design research at the preliminary research stage and the development or prototyping stage. The preliminary research consisted of analysis of the literature review about project-based learning, creative thinking skills, and liquid organic fertilizer from banana peels. The development of prototyping stage consisted designing project-based student worksheets that designs to develop creative thinking skills and validation process or expert judgement by the validator about the designed worksheets. The results showed that there was a very good suitability (100%) bertween project-based stages and creative thinking skill indicators. There are three indicators of creative thinking skills that can be found in this worksheets, which is fluency thinking, flexibility thinking, and elaboration thinking. This shows that creative thinking skill indicators can be well formulated into project-based student worksheets on reaction rate material

Abstract

Project-based learning is a global trend, widely adopted across countries. Project-based learning has developed diversely by emphasizing interdisciplinary, cross-domain, and regional collaboration. To provide in-depth resources for researchers and educators on project-based learning in chemistry experiments, this study aims to make a bibliometric analysis on the topic of project-based learning globally using publication characteristics analysis. The database used in this study used Scopus and obtained 5900 articles from 2018-2023. Bibliometric analysis was analyzed using VOSviewer and Microsoft Excel. The results of the bibliometric analysis show that Boone, C.D. is the author with the highest number of citations on the research topic, Project-based learning in a chemistry experiment. The United States is the most productive country in researching this topic, with 1351 articles. The most influential journal with the highest number of articles is the Journal of Physics Conference Series, with 243 articles. The major contextualized learning literatures in this study tend to fall into broad groups such as Project-based Learning, Education, and STEM Education. These findings suggest the need for multidisciplinary and cross-disciplinary studies on project-based learning research on chemistry learning and advocate for the inclusion of project-based learning research in education from a broader geographical context.
