Abstract

The erosion of environmental awareness and the diminishing recognition of traditional knowledge present significant challenges for contemporary education, particularly in Indonesia. This literature review examines the integration of ethnoscience into science education as a strategic response to these issues. Studies conducted between 2020 and 2025 reveal a growing emphasis on embedding local wisdom—such as indigenous agricultural practices and cultural rituals—into science curricula to enhance environmental consciousness and promote sustainable behaviors. A majority of the research focused on students, with senior high school (40%) and junior high school (26.7%) populations being the primary targets. Notably, research output surged in 2024, reflecting increasing academic interest. Ethnoscience-based instructional materials, including e-modules and interactive books, were widely implemented and demonstrated effectiveness in facilitating conceptual understanding while nurturing cultural appreciation. These tools were well-received by both educators and learners. Geographically, the studies spanned diverse regions, including Papua, Surabaya, and Ponorogo, underscoring the broad applicability of ethnoscience in Indonesian education. Although fewer studies concentrated on teachers, findings suggest that incorporating traditional knowledge into science education fosters cultural preservation, environmental stewardship, and sustainable development. This approach not only enriches the curriculum but also provides learners with a meaningful, context-driven educational experience rooted in both scientific inquiry and cultural heritage..Keywords: ethnoscience, environmental education, indonesia, systematic literature review, science learning

Abstract

This study aims to create a microcontroller-based hydrostatic pressure experiment tool in science education. The digital system makes the tools used more effective and time-efficient. The digital system used in this tool consists of a microcontroller, digital display (LCD), and the MS5637 Barometer sensor. This series of tools processes digital data into hydrostatic pressure, displayed on the LCD. The method used in this study is following Archimedes' principle. The independent variable in this study is the depth of the funnel thrust into the measuring cup, while the dependent variable is the hydrostatic pressure displayed on the LCD. The results showed that the hydrostatic pressure valuesobtained were close to theoretical calculations. Then, the r-squared result between Δh of water and hydrostatic pressure through experiments with a microcontroller (Arduino) is 0.9981. This value is good enough to show the proportion or percentage of hydrostatic pressure affected by Δh of water. Thus, experiments using this tool are quite effective in science learning.

Abstract

The study was a qualitative research, employing ontological and epistemological approaches to explore the philosophy of global warming. Questionnaires and interviews were conducted with students and teachers, which examined whether the current implementation of global warming education aligns with ontological and epistemological perspective and propose recommendations to improve global warming education in science lesson. The ontological perspective begins with literature review that examines the unique of greenhouse gasses characterized as heat traps, focusing on microscopic view of vibrational modes of molecules and their impact on global warming. Furthermore, the epistemological perspective explored how researchers validate the scientific understanding of global warming and its impact on the environment. In addition, the questionnaire result showed that various teaching method, such as experiment, video, PhET simulation, teacher explanation, and internet exploration, were used. But most of students never see the microscopic view of vibrational greenhouse gas molecules that trap the heat. Students also did not evaluate and validate the influence of greenhouse gas concentration on increasing system temperature as epistemological approach. Therefore, the lesson of global warming especially the concept of greenhouse effect, needs an approach that integrates ontological and epistemological perspective, such integrating modeling or simulation in microscopic scale into experimental activities (bifocal modeling).

Abstract

Chemistry learning in vocational schools is often limited to general concepts and lacks connection with students vocational expertise, making it difficult for them to apply theory to practice in agricultural product processing. This study aims to develop acidbase teaching materials using the four-step teaching material development (4STMD) method for students in the agricultural product processing agribusiness program at vocational high schools. The research responds to the lack of curriculum-aligned and contextually relevant resources that integrate chemistry with vocational practices. The study employed development research (DR), focusing on the first two stages of the 4STMD method: selection and structuring. In the selection stage, materials were designed based on basic competencies 3.5 and 4.5, producing eight learning indicators and sixteen concept labels. Acidbase concepts were compiled from national and international textbooks and contextualized with agricultural applications, such as pH control in fermentation. In the structuring stage, concept maps, macro structures, and three levels of representation (macroscopic, microscopic, and symbolic) were developed to link chemical theory with agricultural practices. The draft materials were refined through expert review to ensure clarity and scientific accuracy. The results indicate that the developed teaching materials are systematic, scientifically valid, and relevant to the curriculum. They also integrate substantive and pedagogical contexts that support students vocational learning needs. This study shows that the 4STMD method is effective for producing chemistry teaching materials that are structured, contextual, and applicable, thereby enhancing the relevance and quality of chemistry education in vocational high schools

Abstract

Chemistry learning in Vocational High Schools (SMK), particularly in the Agribusiness Processing of Agricultural Products (APHP) expertise program, has not been fully integrated with vocational contexts, leading to students' low motivation and limited understanding of chemistry concepts. This study aims to develop a contextual chemistry learning module on colloidal systems using the Four Steps Teaching Material Development (4S-TMD) method. The research employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach following the DDE model (Design, Develop, Evaluate). The process included the design and initial development phases, namely selection and structuring stages. The selection phase resulted in five competency achievement indicators and ten concept labels compiled from 14 reference sources. The structuring phase produced a concept map, macro structure, and multi-level representations (macroscopic, sub-microscopic, and symbolic), all designed to enhance students' comprehensive understanding. The developed module shows potential in improving the relevance of chemistry instruction to vocational practices in SMK. Further research is recommended to proceed with the characterization and didactic reduction stages to optimize the readability and accessibility of the learning materials.
