Abstract

This study focuses on the contributions Waqf institutions make to community service delivery while critically examining their role in advancing sustainable development in Nigeria. In order to assess the impact of Waqf in sectors including education, healthcare, poverty reduction, and infrastructure development, the study uses both qualitative and quantitative data gathered through surveys, interviews, and document analysis. In order to highlight excellent practices and issues, case studies of prominent Waqf foundations in Nigeria are given, together with their accomplishments and shortcomings. The results show that although Waqf institutions have made important contributions to community service, issues including tax regulatory frameworks, low public awareness, and subpar management techniques have prevented them from reaching their full potential. The report emphasizes that in order to improve the operation of Waqf institutions, legal reforms, capacity training, and public-private collaborations are necessary. With a focus on its alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the study ends by offering a roadmap for utilizing Waqf as a tool for sustainable development in Nigeria. There are suggestions on how civil society, religious institutions, and government agencies might work together to revive Waqf institutions for efficient community service delivery, which would eventually support social cohesion and national growth.

Abstract

The emergence of digital technology and e-commerce has provided uncountable access of wealth and novel economic prospects to women worldwide, particularly Muslim women residing in Northern Nigeria. This study investigates the ways in which Muslim women engage in e-commerce within an area that has historically been influenced by conventional conservative religious and cultural standards. Through an analysis of their participation in virtual enterprises, the research underscores the distinct socio-cultural and religious elements impacting their e-commerce endeavors. It also discusses the difficulties they have, like their lack of access to technology, low levels of digital literacy, and financial marginalization. The study uses secondary data from government papers, academic literature, and case studies as part of a qualitative research technique. Women who were involved in e-commerce were interviewed, and data from previous surveys was examined to offer insights into the trends of participation and the barriers faced. The results indicate that although e-commerce presents a great opportunity for economic empowerment, a number of obstacles prevent full engagement. These include the necessity for financial products that comply with Sharia law, societal expectations, and infrastructure constraints. The article ends with suggestions for boosting the participation of Muslim women in the digital economy, with an emphasis on advancing financial services that adhere to Sharia law, increasing digital literacy, and increasing access to technology. These tactics may encourage Muslim women to become more financially independent, which would boost the region's economy in Northern Nigeria. Abstract

Human greed, carelessness, and a lack of moral concern for other living things have undermined the vital connection that exists between humans and the environment. Pollution, deforestation, and careless garbage disposal are just a few examples of how far society has strayed from its moral obligation to protect the environment. The goal of this study is to investigate how moral and ethical principles can be applied to rectify environmentally harmful human attitudes. The study's primary goal is to advance environmental ethics as a means of resurrecting human empathy and accountability for all living things. Using a qualitative approach, books, journal articles, passages from the Qur'an, and prophetic traditions emphasizing moral behaviour and earth stewardship were reviewed. Results show that environmental degradation is not just a physical problem but also a moral one brought on by ignorance, greed, and a lack of empathy. According to the study, people are more inclined to preserve and defend the environment when they see it through the prism of humanity and divine trust. Therefore, the work suggests that public awareness campaigns be used to support the inclusion of environmental ethics in moral and religious education at all levels. It suggests that people, educators, and religious organizations collaborate to create a culture of environmental responsibility and compassion for all living things, concluding that true humanity is reflected in genuine care for the environment.

Abstract

This study looks into how women-led home-based businesses in Northern Nigeria operate in regard to Islamic household management concepts. In particular, it looks at how female entrepreneurs incorporate important Islamic principles like ?adl (justice), i?tid?l/?isr?f avoidance (moderation), and barakah (blessing) into their household and microbusiness management. In many Northern Nigerian villages, women are increasingly working in small-scale jobs including food processing, crafts, and tailoring to help support their families. While Islamic teachings provide a thorough framework for striking a balance between economic endeavours and household responsibilities, little empirical study has examined how women who own micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) really implement these concepts in their dual roles. In Bauchi, Gombe, and Kaduna States, a purposive sample of twenty women running home-based MSMEs in a variety of trades participated in a qualitative multiple-case research. Semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and the examination of personal and professional documents were used to gather data. To find trends in the distribution of profits, time management, resource allocation, and social duties, thematic analysis was used. The results show that women entrepreneurs' daily choices are greatly influenced by Islamic values. Participants established shared-storage practices in line with Islamic moderation, prioritized halal sourcing, and reduced waste through group purchases. Maintaining balance between work, religion, and childcare was made easier by planning work schedules around daily prayers. With a methodical allocation to home needs, business reinvestment, zakat responsibilities, and voluntary charity, profit distribution techniques also mirrored Islamic standards of fairness. The study comes to the conclusion that Islamic household management concepts offer a useful moral and practical framework that improves the long-term viability of women-owned businesses. In Northern Nigeria, strengthening these practices through women-focused support programs, faith-based business training, and community microfinance can further foster local economic development and family resilience.

Abstract

This paper develops a conceptual framework for integrating zakat and waqf as complementary instruments aimed at sustainable economic empowerment. The two main pillars of Islamic social finance, zakat and waqf, have historically and theologically pursued complementing social goals of the public interest (maslahah), social protection, and poverty alleviation. In many Muslim-majority nations, waqf (an endowment intended to produce enduring public benefit) and zakat (a redistributive, mandatory alms giving) have mainly functioned in separate institutional and legal frameworks while having a similar goal of improving human welfare and acts of worship. This paper aims to discuss the strategic integration of zakat and waqf, particularly in contemporary forms like cash waqf, zakat-funded waqf seed capital, and joint zakat-waqf impact programs, to significantly increase the resource base for programs aimed at sustainable economic empowerment, boost the effectiveness of attaining the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and enhance governance and accountability in Islamic social finance. The paper presents an operational framework for integration, addresses governance safeguards and shariah considerations, and provides policy recommendations to practitioners, regulators, and donors using a systematic literature synthesis, comparative models, and illustrative case studies (Indonesia, Malaysia, Nigeria) and contemporary conceptual models. The study concludes that, despite operational, legal, and institutional obstacles, digitally enabled governance, standardized impact indicators, and hybrid public-private partnerships offer practical means to scale zakat-waqf integration for inclusive and sustainable development.

Abstract

Background: Early childhood literacy and numeracy are essential foundations for social cohesion, lifelong learning, and sustainable development. In Northern Nigeria, these skills are shaped not only by formal education systems but also by families, traditional leaders, and religious-based support institutions such as waqf. However, empirical evidence on the specific roles and interactions of these actors remains limited. Objective: This study examines the contributions of families, traditional leaders, and waqf institutions to early childhood literacy and numeracy development in Gombe and Adamawa States, Nigeria, and identifies key challenges affecting their effectiveness. Methods: A mixed-methods design was employed, integrating survey data, structured interviews, and documentary analysis to explore institutional, cultural, and religious influences on early childhood education. Results: The findings indicate that families are the primary source of early cognitive development and value formation. Traditional leaders act as cultural custodians and intermediaries who mobilize community support for educational initiatives. Waqf institutions provide sustained financial support for community learning centres and Qur’anic schools. Nevertheless, these contributions are constrained by poverty, weak waqf institutionalization, and declining family involvement. Conclusion: The study concludes that early childhood literacy and numeracy outcomes in Northern Nigeria can be improved through a coordinated approach that strengthens collaboration among families, traditional leaders, and waqf institutions to ensure sustainable early childhood education initiatives.

Abstract

Background of study: The main factor behind this research is the changing characteristics and learning style needs of Generation Alpha, today's kindergarten students. To create a fun, meaningful, and conscious learning environment, schools and teachers must incorporate digital technologies such as smart TVs or interactive large screen panels into their learning processes. Video-assisted learning (VAL) is considered attractive because it can make learning easier for kindergarten-aged children to understand and enjoy.Aims: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of conventional lectures compared to video-assisted learning in improving student learning outcomes at Perjuangan Kindergarten in Bengkulu City. Methods: This study used an experimental method with a sample of fifteen students from Class B1 and fifteen students from Class B2, each of whom received different treatments. Pre-tests and post-tests with pictures tailored to aspects of child development were used to assess learning outcomes. To conclude the effectiveness of the two methods, the data were tested with N-Gain scores using SPSS.Result: Students in classes taught using the VAL method obtained an N-Gain score of 68.5%, indicating that this method is quite effective in improving their learning outcomes. Students in classes taught using the lecture method only obtained an N-Gain score of 26.9%, indicating that this method is not effective in improving student learning outcomes. This study shows a significant difference between the two methods. Conclusion: This study concluded that the Video Assisted Learning method was more effective in improving student learning outcomes than the lecture method.

Abstract

This paper seeks to examine the opportunities and challenges posed by the ?al?l business in Nigeria and its certification according to laws. It provides a comprehensive review of the sector, outlining its structure, current state, potential for growth and the intimidating challenges in the operational and legal circle. ?al?l industry is an emerging sector with great potential for growth and economic development in Nigeria. The large Muslim population is a driving factor that creates opportunities for its growth to improve the national economy. However, these opportunities, as well as the impeding challenges, have still been poorly understood. The paper draws data from both primary and secondary sources; obtained from interviews, industry literature, government laws and reports. The paper found that legal provision of halal industry in Nigeria can create more opportunities in the country’s trade and commerce sector by expanding the production of locally grown food, creating economic linkages, developing an export market, booming tourism and hospitality sectors; and thus become a major source of employment in the country. However, a number of challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, insufficient access to finance, and a lack of regulatory framework could hamper the growth of the industry; and therefore, need to be addressed. The paper conclude that with the proper policy interventions and investment, the ?al?l industry in Nigeria has the potential to create significant economic, social, and environmental benefits [Tulisan ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji peluang dan tantangan yang ditimbulkan oleh bisnis ?al?l di Nigeria serta sistem sertifikasinya berdasarkan ketentuan hukum yang berlaku.

Abstract

Within the larger context of Islamic social finance, this research explores how waqf has evolved from a conventional charitable organization to a useful tool for long-term socioeconomic development. In Muslim societies throughout history, waqf has been essential in promoting communal welfare, healthcare, education, and religious institutions. However, weak governance structures, insufficient legal and regulatory frameworks, poor asset management, and a lack of strategic alignment with national and community development goals have limited its effectiveness in many modern contexts. Waqf is therefore frequently limited to temporary humanitarian endeavors rather than being utilized as a long-term development organization. This research investigates the evolving role of waqf within Islamic social finance using a qualitative research technique. It draws on an extensive survey of scholarly literature, policy documents, chosen case studies, and insights from expert interviews. The analysis finds important institutional, ethical, and practical constraints that impede waqf's developmental potential, such as governance flaws, inadequate transparency, poor public awareness, and fragmented cooperation with other Islamic social finance mechanisms like zakat. The findings show that waqf has considerable untapped potential to contribute to long-term human development when repositioned within a comprehensive development framework. Institutional reforms, professional management practices, accountability systems, and policy integration appear to be significant variables for improving its efficacy. The research suggests that integrating waqf with maq??id al-shar??ah objectives and current development concerns can reposition it as a sustainable funding mechanism alongside other Islamic finance instruments. The research concludes with practical policy proposals aimed at strengthening waqf governance, institutional capacity, and strategic relevance, thus increasing its contribution to long-term social and economic growth in Muslim nations.

Abstract

Northeastern Nigeria faces a countless of environmental challenges, including desertification, deforestation, water scarcity, and the adverse effects of climate change. These issues not only threaten the region’s ecological balance but also jeopardize the livelihoods, health, and social stability of its communities. Amidst these challenges, religious moderation emerges as a pivotal factor in fostering sustainable environmental stewardship. This paper explores the intersection of religious moderation and environmental management, emphasizing the influential role of religious leaders and Islamic teachings in promoting eco-friendly practices. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, including qualitative interviews with community leaders and quantitative analysis of environmental indicators, the study identifies key mechanisms through which religious moderation contributes to mitigating environmental degradation. Findings reveal that religious leaders who advocate for balance, stewardship (Khilafah), and justice (Adl) significantly enhance community engagement in conservation efforts and the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices. Additionally, case studies highlight successful initiatives where religious institutions collaborated with governmental and non-governmental organizations to address water scarcity and reforestation. However, the research also identifies challenges such as poverty, limited educational resources, and the rise of extremism that hinder the full potential of religious moderation in environmental governance. The paper concludes by recommending a collaborative framework between religious bodies, government agencies, and local communities to amplify the impact of religious moderation on environmental sustainability. By integrating religious principles with environmental policies, Northeastern Nigeria can navigate its ecological challenges more effectively, ensuring a harmonious balance between development and conservation. This study contributes to the broader discourse on the role of religion in environmental sustainability and provides actionable insights for policymakers and religious leaders aiming to foster a resilient and sustainable future for the region.
