Abstract

This study explores the role of social media in enhancing English proficiency among students at the Shehu Sule College of Nursing Sciences, Damaturu. Despite the growing use of digital platforms in education, limited research has examined their specific impact on language learning in this context. This study addresses this gap using a quantitative approach by distributing an online questionnaire via college students’ WhatsApp groups. A total of 104 students participated in the study, and data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and frequency distribution. Google Docs spreadsheets were used for chart visualization. Findings reveal a gender disparity, with 79.8% of male and 20.2% of female respondents. The frequency of social media usage varied, with 42.3% using it daily, 36.5% several times a week, 18.3% occasionally, and 2.9% infrequently. WhatsApp was the most preferred platform (42.4%), followed by Facebook (20.7%), YouTube and Instagram (17.4% each), and TikTok (2.2%). Key learning activities included watching educational videos (28.0%), following language-learning groups (26.2%), reading posts (20.9%), and language exchanges (14.2%), while podcast listening was less common (10.7%). Students reported improvements in vocabulary (41.4%), grammar (50.0%), and pronunciation (55.7%), with 47.2% experiencing increased motivation. Additionally, 70.2% of respondents support integrating social media into formal education, while 21.2% advocate a cautious approach. The study recommends promoting female engagement, developing tailored learning resources, incorporating emerging platforms, enhancing interactive activities, and formally integrating social media into English curricula. These findings underscore social media’s potential as an effective supplementary tool for language learning.

Abstract

This paper investigates the fundamental elements of Islamic social welfare and economic systems Waqf and Zakat. As required almsgiving and charitable endowments, they are essential to wealth redistribution and communal support. Regardless of their relevance, the absence of official recognition and incorporation within the national legal system poses significant obstacles for these institutions in Nigeria. In an effort to increase the effectiveness and influence of Zakat and Waqf legislation in Nigeria, this study makes the case for a constitutional review that would include them. A qualitative research approach was taken, utilizing contents analysis for data analysis as well as literature and interview to obtain pertinent information. According to the research, the Nigerian constitution does not explicitly and immediately formalize the Waqf and Zakat institutions, and new legislation is required to enable their creation and management. The study offers a thorough analysis of pertinent federal laws and acts as a viable remedy to improve the Waqf and Zakat systems throughout Nigeria.

Abstract

A number of Muslim-majority countries scored low in SDGs achievements, mainly due to the limitation of funding sources. Many Islamic scholars propose Islamic Finance to address this issue. This research was performed to determine the impactful authors, institutions, countries, journals and keywords in the literature on SDGs in Islamic Commercial Finance (ICF) and Islamic Social Finance (ISF). Furthermore, this paper also presents the discussion on relevant trends and proposes directions for future research in this field. A bibliometric approach and content analysis were administered in analyzing 139 articles retrieved from the Scopus database. The results show that Hassan R. is the most productive author, while Universitas Airlangga and Malaysia are leading institution and country focus in this research theme. “International Journal of Ethics and System” is the leading journal, and the most influential keywords are “SDGs”, “Islamic finance”, and “waqf”. Six research streams were identified: 1) Governance and Performance for SDGs; 2) Innovation for Financing SDGs; 3) Digitalization for SDGs Realization; 4) Green Investment for SDGs Realization; 5) Solution for Socioeconomic Issues; and 6) Contribution to Economic Sustainability. Governments and regulators are recommended to strengthen Islamic finance by ensuring Shariah compliance, promoting blended finance, regulating fintech, incentivizing green sukuk, standardizing SDG reporting, and fostering cross-border harmonization to enhance sustainability, financial inclusion, and economic growth while balancing innovation and risk management.

Abstract

This activity examines the practical role of Waqf (Islamic endowment) in improving primary healthcare services within rural communities of Gombe State, Nigeria. Although primary healthcare is still essential for long-term community well-being, rural areas in Gombe State continue to face obstacles such as inadequate medical personnel, limited infrastructure, and a lack of affordable medications. Utilizing a qualitative case study methodology, data was gathered through interviews with healthcare professionals, Waqf administrators, community leaders, and beneficiaries in three selected rural communities. The study also analyzed existing Waqf-based health projects and explored the administrative systems and legal frameworks of Waqf in Gombe State.  The results show that Waqf, when properly institutionalized, has a revolutionary effect on community health education, drug subsidization, the construction of community clinics, and the provision of free maternity and child health services. Waqf's efficacy in the healthcare industry is, however, constrained by the research's discovery of awareness, regulatory enforcement, and stakeholder coordination deficiencies.  The report suggests policy frameworks that incorporate Waqf into Gombe State's main healthcare development plan, the establishment of a state-recognized Waqf commission with a focus on healthcare, and the strengthening of local Waqf administrators' capacity. The study concludes that Waqf is a workable Islamic social finance instrument that can relieve the strain on public health resources, empower marginalized rural communities, and help the state achieve universal health care.

Abstract

Progressive law demands more open-mindedness to the possibility of alternative solutions in solving legal problems. In this case, the application of restorative justice is expected to have a positive impact on justice, not only in the formal legal context, but also in a broader social context. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the changes to criminal law in Law Number 1 of 2023 (later referred to as the National Criminal Law). How the application of restorative justice in the National Criminal Law is viewed from the perspective of progressive law. The method used is descriptive-normative, by collecting normative legal data, such as laws or regulations, to identify and understand its application in practice. The results show that Restorative justice offers a more humanist approach in resolving criminal cases, which focuses not only on punishment, but also on restoring the relationship between the perpetrator, the victim, and the community. Articles in the National Criminal Law indicate the existence of restorative justice in Article 54, Article 132 Paragraph 1 Letter g, Article 82, Articles 76, 77, and 80 (Reason for Termination of Prosecution), 132 Paragraph 1 Letters d and e. Restorative Justice in the National Criminal Law with a progressive legal approach provides opportunities for non-criminal settlements (diversion), recognition of victims, restorative justice, settlement with a substantive justice approach, alternative criminal sanctions. Through the application of restorative justice, the Indonesian criminal justice system has the potential to focus more on recovery and rehabilitation, reduce the burden on the courts, and support the social reintegration of offenders, which will create a more harmonious and just society. ___ References Books with an author: Dahl, R. Abstract

Background of study: Ḥalāl industry is an emerging sector with great potential for growth and economic development in Nigeria. The large Muslim population is a driving factor that creates opportunities for its growth to improve the national economy. However, these opportunities, as well as the impeding challenges, have still been poorly understood.Aims and scope of paper: This paper seeks to examine the opportunities and challenges posed by the Ḥalāl industry in Nigeria. It provides a comprehensive review of the sector, outlining its structure, current state, potential for growth and the intimidating challenges. Methods: The paper draws data from both primary and secondary sources; obtained from interviews, industry literature, and government reports.Result: The results show that although Nigeria has a lot of promise because of its Muslim consumer base, agricultural products, and enterprising populace, the sector is still fragmented.  Lack of public knowledge, poor infrastructure, low adherence to international ḥalāl norms, and the absence of a national ḥalāl authority are some of the main obstacles.  However, prospects in export markets, agro-processing, Islamic financing assistance, youth-led entrepreneurship, and regional trade agreements like the AfCFTA.Conclusion: The research concludes that, driven by the large Muslim population in Nigeria, the ḥalāl industry has strong potential to boost economic growth through local production, greater exports, and tourism development.

Abstract

This study examines the legal framework of waqf in Nigeria and its potential role in driving modern economic development. Waqf, as one of the key institutions in Islamic economic law, has historically played a significant role in wealth redistribution, social welfare, and public service provision in many Muslim societies. Despite its substantial potential, waqf in Nigeria remains underutilized due to regulatory ambiguities, low public awareness, and complex socio-political dynamics. This research provides an in-depth analysis of the existing waqf laws in Nigeria, highlighting their strengths and weaknesses, and investigates how regulatory reforms could enhance the effectiveness of waqf in addressing socio-economic challenges. Employing a qualitative research approach, the study integrates doctrinal legal analysis with empirical research to explore the waqf framework in Nigeria and its role in economic development. The findings reveal the implications of developing a more robust legal framework for waqf in Nigeria, emphasizing its role in poverty alleviation, education funding, healthcare services, and infrastructure development, while identifying its potential as a complementary mechanism to state-provided services. The study recommends the establishment of a dedicated waqf commission to standardize regulations, ensure accountability, and promote transparency. It also advocates for partnerships between government agencies, religious institutions, and civil society to raise awareness and encourage public participation in waqf initiatives. By integrating waqf into Nigeria’s broader economic and development policies, the study concludes that waqf has the potential to play a transformative role in achieving sustainable development goals, reducing economic disparities, and fostering community-driven development. The research findings are intended to serve as a foundation for policymakers, academics, and practitioners interested in revitalizing waqf within Nigeria’s contemporary economic framework.

Abstract

As the world grapples with the escalating impacts of climate change, innovative financing mechanisms to support mitigation efforts have become increasingly urgent. This study investigates the potential role of waqf an Islamic endowment system in addressing climate change challenges in Northern Nigeria, a region that faces a number of environmental and climate challenges particularly in terms of environmental degradation and climatic variability. The research utilizes a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative interviews with key stakeholders, including waqf administrators, community leaders, and environmental activists, alongside quantitative analysis of existing waqf funds and projects related to climate adaptation. Findings reveal that waqf funds can be effectively leveraged to support various climate change mitigation initiatives, such as afforestation, water conservation, and renewable energy projects. The study highlights several successful case studies where waqf-supported activities have enhanced local resilience and contributed to sustainable resource management. Furthermore, it identifies significant barriers to the implementation of environmentally focused waqf initiatives, including lack of awareness, inadequate regulatory frameworks, and limited community engagement. The paper proposes actionable recommendations to optimize the role of waqf in climate change mitigation, including enhancing legal structures to support environmental waqf, fostering collaboration between waqf institutions and environmental NGOs, and implementing educational campaigns to raise awareness about the importance of sustainable practices within waqf management. Ultimately, this study advocates for a paradigm shift in the perception of waqf from a purely charitable endeavor to a comprehensive instrument for sustainability and climate resilience, thereby contributing to the broader discourse on integrating indigenous financial mechanisms into global climate change strategies.
