Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the changes in the meaning of "person's name" in East Java Society. The significance of people's "names" holds importance due to differences in naming practices and their meanings across generations, specifically the X, Y, Z, and Alpha generations. A sociolinguistic perspective is employed in this study, utilizing a descriptive qualitative research method. Primary data is collected through interviews and observations, while secondary data is obtained through relevant document searches. The findings reveal that the naming patterns differ for each generation, including X, Y, Z, and Alpha, depending on the parents' expectations for their child's name. These expectations are influenced by external factors such as religion, date and month of birth, and socio-cultural aspects, as well as internal factors such as parents' preferences for specific languages or characters from certain stories. In conclusion, Javanese names and their meanings have undergone shifts across generations, both in terms of the number of words and language choices. The X generation tends to have fewer words compared to the Y, Z, and Alpha generations. Similarly, the Y generation exhibits relatively fewer and shorter names compared to the Z and Alpha generations. Regarding language, the most recent generations, Z and Alpha (1997-present), incorporate a greater variety of foreign languages into their names compared to the previous generations (X and Y) of Javanese names. Kata Kunci: Pergeseran Nama, Makna, Sosiolingusitik

Abstract

Communication requires attention to honesty and trust. Communicators must have credibility that can be trusted. The speech will be rewarded if it matches the action. The discrepancy between speech and implementation action will only make a speech as lip service. This research aims to identify lip service from President Jokowi and reveal its context. This intertwined reading of the text and context will provide a comprehensive understanding of President Jokowi's lip service communication as well as an understanding of why this lip service communication occurred. This research uses the Political Discourse Analysis (PDA) method. PDA method analyzes Jokowi's lip service texts and contexts: the permissibility of demonstrations, KPK law revision, call for more criticism, and TWK for KPK employees. It has been observed that President Jokowi engages in lip service communication when the topic of discussion revolves around two key discourses: fundamental democratic values and anti-corruption measures. The research findings suggest that such communication is employed to politicize these discourses and maintain President Jokowi's image as a democratic and anti-corruption leader

Abstract

In the era of globalization, bilingual education (Indonesian-English) which is encouraged in several schools has reduced the intensity of using local languages as mother tongue. This resulted in regional languages being at a critical level. Therefore, this study aims to describe the influence of bilingual education on the development of diction, grammar, and regional language pronunciation of bilingual education students. The method used in this study is a qualitative conversational method. The instruments in this study were researchers assisted by observation sheets. The results of the study state that at the diction level, code mixing occurs in regional languages, Indonesian, and English. At the grammatical level, sentences in Javanese, Indonesian and English are interchanged. On the other hand, at the pronunciation level, students experience problems learning phonemes in regional languages in the form of phoneme substitutions and silences. The factors that cause this to happen are the familiarity between speakers, the high intensity of the use of Indonesian and English, as well as the mastery of regional languages that are still limited.

Abstract

Tourism is one of the largest and fastest growing economic sectors in the world and has a considerable role to play in delivering sustainable development in many countries. Over the last fifty years, tourism has become one of the largest economic sectors globally, accounting for some 9% of the world’s GDP and over 200 million jobs. Tourist movements towards developing and least developed countries are growing faster than in the developed world, accounting now for almost 50% of total international tourist arrivals. Many developing countries do have assets of enormous value to the tourism sector, such as culture, art, landscape, wildlife, and climate. They are very well positioned to develop tourism as a key sector contributing to economic growth. The development of tourism in Indonesia has given significant contribution toward national economic growth. These dynamics have turned tourism into a key driver for socio-‎economic progress. Tourism is one of the many external forces influencing the direction and options for local sustainable development. One of the interesting phenomena is focusing on the concept of Local Tourism Village: a village exploring the local tourism potentials and culture in Kota Wisata Batu (KWB), East Java, Indonesia. This research offers a design or model of Local Tourism Village which is equipped with the awareness of tourism and also language to enrich local human resources. This is in line with sustainable development to simultaneously achieve three objectives, namely: (1) to increase local social welfare; (2) to get greater and more equitably distributed local economic wealth; and (3) to enhance the integrity of local ecosystems (UN Conference on Environment and Development). The design is based on the analysis of local tourism potentials, the analysis of human resources to promote tourisms, and the need survey of English as an international language to support tourism promotions. This model requires the joint of local government, society, and education practitioners to establish autonomous learning condition. The model works on giving training on English for Tourisms presented on a module and practiced in series of tourism activities. Keywords: Local tourism village, Sustainable development, English for Tourisms, Kota Wisata Batu

Abstract

Kelud is one of the 13 active volcanoes located in Java Island. The sequence of eruptions becomes a natural phenomenon which constructs the culture of the people who live around it. Therefore, this local wisdom-based research tries to investigate the relationship between the socio-cultural life of people inhibiting at the foot of Kelud Volcano and the disaster mitigation. The inhabitants of Sugihwaras Village who live within 10 km radius from the peak of Kelud are assumed as a “disaster-aware” community that becomes a valuable source of the local wisdom. The ethnography approach was stressed on the cultural tradition of the people of Sugihwaras that was observed directly from participation during traditional events, especially rituals. The rediscovery of the local wisdom in a traditional effort of disaster mitigation as the main goal of the research is expected to give contributions to good governance. This is highly possible because it is shown in most of the findings that the local wisdom of Kelud people teaches moral ethics which not only guides the relationship between human being and The Almighty, the way to respect each other among social human being, but also the harmonious life between human and nature.  Keywords:Socio-cultural life, traditional mitigation, Kelud people, local wisdom
