Abstract

This study investigates the daily life of a student navigating a multilingual language policy at Pesantren Progresif Bumi Sholawat, an Islamic boarding school in East Java. It aims to explore how the use of multiple languages, primarily English, supported by Japanese, Arabic, and Javanese, shapes the student’s communication, identity formation, and emotional adaptation. Utilizing a qualitative methodology with a narrative inquiry approach, the study draws on Vygotsky's sociocultural theory, which emphasizes social interaction and cultural tools as the foundation of language acquisition. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using thematic narrative analysis.  The findings show three key aspects, First, students experience both cognitive and emotional tension while adapting to the English-only policy. Second, support from peers and teachers serves as crucial scaffolding that helps them build confidence and overcame language anxiety. Third, students gradually form a hybrid identity that integrates Pesantren values with global communication competence This research contributes to the field of language policy by foregrounding student voices, affective experiences, and practical directions for enhancing multilingual practices in Islamic boarding schools.

Abstract

This paper focuses on the user perception of their experience in using the auto-translate feature on social media. A mixed-method is employed in this study to gain quantitative and qualitative results and provide a more in-depth understanding of the analysis, with an online questionnaire as the research instrument. In order to reach a broader audience, snowball sampling is used since there are no specific criteria for the subject target. The majority of the respondents are women with bachelor's degrees aged 17-28. There are three aspects of assessment on the questionnaire following Nababan’s theory: accuracy, acceptability, and readability. The findings showed that the result of the auto-translate feature on social media has good accuracy, moderate readability, and is very acceptable. Meanwhile, the shortcomings of this feature are lack of context understanding, mistranslation due to wrong diction, and grammar updates.

Abstract

A translator must have a thorough grasp of a language and its culture in order to determine the most appropriate interpretation while being true to the culture's intent. They must understand the translation technique and category to maintain consistency while translating cultural texts such as idioms and culture-specific items. This study explored translation procedures for idioms and culture-specific items, as well as their categories, in light of these considerations. The researcher did a descriptive qualitative study utilizing two instruments from Lucy M. Montgomery's original novel "Anne's House of Dreams," which was first published in 1917 and had 275 pages. Meanwhile, Maria M. Lubis released a 275-page Indonesian translation in 1998. According to the findings, there were 146 data points for idioms and 26 data points for culture-specific things. The most common translation approach utilized was Translation by Paraphrase, and the least common was Translation by Omission, according to the initial statistics on idioms. Meanwhile, the second set of data on Culture-specific Items revealed that Transfer was the most regularly utilized translation approach, while Deletion was the least. Finally, the most often used category for classification was Ecology. Overall, we believe that this study will aid readers in comprehending translation.

Abstract

Translation, along with technological advancement, has been a critical step in enabling the journalistic message to transcend territorial borders. This study aims to determine the type of equivalence contained in the news translation of VICE Indonesia YouTube channel and its impact on the translation quality. The data were taken from the subtitle transcript of VICE Indonesia. This research was conducted by using qualitative descriptive method. Several theories were elaborated within this research namely, Nida & Taber theory of equivalence (cited in Panou, 2013, p.2) and the equivalence theory of Baker (2018), and the adopted model of translation quality assessment from Nababan et al. (2012). The results of this study showed that there were six types of equivalence found within the subtitles: formal equivalence, dynamic equivalence, equivalence at word level, equivalence above word level, grammatical equivalence, and pragmatic equivalence. Grammatical equivalence is the type that dominates the overall data. Furthermore, the findings shows that 66.67% of samples were categorized as less communicative, 58.33% of samples were evaluated as unacceptable translations, and 38.89% of the sample scored as high readability level.

Abstract

The paper investigates the language use of the Balinese diaspora in Kampung Bali, Peng­anjuran, a multilingual village in Banyuwangi, which includes the multilingual situation, the nature of the language accommodation and the language domains. The current study answers the following research questions: (1) how is the situation of multilingualism in the village? (2) how is the situation of language accommodation in the Balinese village in the village? and (3) what are the domains of the use of the languages spoken in the village? The research applied a qualitative research approach using semi-structured interviews. Thirteen questions were asked during the interviews with three research participants. The answers were coded into data related to multilingualism situation, language accommodation, and domains of language use of the languages spoken in Kampung Bali, Penganjuran. The analysis aims to search for patterns and links in the coded texts. The findings show that the Balinese diaspora is the most multilingual ethnic group in Kampung Bali, Penganjuran, as they speak five languages: Indonesian, Balinese, Osing, Javanese, and Madurese. The Balinese also displays an accom­modative nature toward the national language and the dominant vernacular languages. The findings also show that the domains of use of Balinese in the diaspora have declined since it is only used at the house of worship by three research participants and at home by one par­ticipant. The accommodative nature of the Balinese diaspora might have contributed to the shift from Balinese to the national language or to the dominant vernacular languages.

Abstract

Pendidikan seni budaya, termasuk pendidikan budi pekerti, merupakan upaya paling mendasar yang harus diterapkan kepada anak-anak generasi bangsa, karena tanpa mengenal budaya Indonesia, maka pertumbuhan generasi akan kacau di masa datang. Efek dari hal ini adalah timbulnya demoralisasi atau kemerosotan moral di masyarakat. Misalnya, dalam masyarakat Jawa, kehalusan bertutur kata yang tercermin dalam stratifikasi bahasa Jawa sudah mengalami erosi berat. Anak-anak muda tidak lagi mau dan mampu berbahasa krama dengan orang tuanya dan dengan orang lain yang lebih tua sebagai wujud adanya rasa hormat. Apalagi pada era globalisasi saat ini, identitas budaya pribumi (lokal) dan budaya nasional makin musnah, tergerus oleh budaya global atau kultural dunia barat. Kecintaan budaya lokal dan nasional sangat penting demi kemajuan bangsa. Akar dan keberagaman budaya lokal dan nasional tersebut akan mampu mengikis masuknya budaya global yang negatif. Tidak hanya itu, perspektif budaya lokal akan mampu menyatukan komponen bangsa menuju keberhasilan pembangunan. Perangkat dan pengaruh globalisasi terhadap budaya dan seni masyarakat akan memudarkan aktivitas seni dan budaya lokal. Seni budaya lokal dan nasional yang sangat positif sangat perlu diterapkan menjadi materi pendidikan dalam proses belajar mengajar di sekolah. Oleh karena itu, upaya peningkatan dalam menanamkan kecintaan terhadap budaya daerah dan nasional diterapkan di sekolah dengan berbagai kompetisi, kreativitas lomba budaya daerah terutama melalui lembaga-lembaga pendidikan formal dan non formal. Agar  pemilik dan penutur asli bahasa daerah sadar tentang begitu besar dan pentingnya fungsi bahasa daerah, perlu diupayakan peningkatan mutu pemakaian bahasa daerah, mencakup upaya meningkatkan sikap, pengetahuan, dan ketrampilan berbahasa daerah melalui jalur formal—pendidikan dan pengajaran di sekolah dan jalur informal--dengan memfungsikan bahasa daerah dalam kehidupan masyarakat sehari-hari.

Abstract

This study examines the translation of cultural terms in the poem “Pastoral,” focusing on strategies used to achieve clarity and comprehension in the target language (TL). The findings show that cultural transplantation is primarily realized through adaptation as the dominant strategy, followed by addition and reduction. These strategies reflect the translator’s effort to balance fidelity to the source text (ST) with accessibility for target readers. Although some cultural nuances may be reduced, these procedures enhance readability and support clearer understanding of meaning. Cultural transplantation thus serves as a key approach in bridging cultural differences, enabling the themes and emotional depth of the original poem to be conveyed effectively in the target text (TT). The study also highlights the role of translation in facilitating coherent intercultural communication. Future research is recommended to apply comparative analyses across literary texts to identify patterns in translating cultural terms and deepen insights into the relationship between language, culture, and translation.

Abstract

As Indonesia becomes increasingly integrated into the global economy, English proficiency is essential for both educational and professional opportunities. However, traditional classroom instruction often prioritizes grammar and writing, resulting in limited development of students' speaking and listening skills. This study investigates students’ perceptions of informal English learning through their participation in the English Club at SMPN 14 Malang. Informal learning environments offer a dynamic setting for practicing English through discussions, storytelling, and interactive activities, thereby fostering both confidence and fluency. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the study gathered data from 20 students using open-ended questionnaires to explore their experiences. The findings reveal that students value the club’s relaxed atmosphere, interactive learning methods, and social elements, all of which contribute to increased motivation and language acquisition. Nevertheless, some students report difficulties with public speaking, group dynamics, and the pacing of activities. Recommendations for improvement include incorporating more film-based sessions and maintaining a fun, low-pressure learning environment. This study underscores the role of informal learning in complementing formal instruction and provides insights for educators seeking to design more engaging English language experiences.
