Abstract

Adolescent girls in Jakarta face unique mental health challenges due to cultural, social, and environmental factors. Understanding their prevention needs is critical to inform targeted interventions. This qualitative study aimed to explore the prevention needs of mental health disorders among adolescent girls in Jakarta, shedding light on their experiences and requirements for effective support. We conducted a qualitative study in Jakarta, Indonesia. Participants included 4 counseling guidance teachers consisting of public schools, private schools, Islamic and Christian affiliated schools, 2 parents, 1 coordinator of the School Health Unit, 2 health workers who hold PKPR projects, and the supervisor in charge of the school health unit, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through focus group discussion and analyzed using thematic analysis manually. The study reveals that teachers and parents have varying levels of exposure to adolescent mental health information, with some offering counseling but not always tailored to girls' needs. Parents often rely on subtle cues to detect mental health issues in their daughters. There's room for improvement in addressing girls' mental health needs in schools, with specific training for teachers and more open parent-daughter communication. Further research is needed to ensure uniform support for adolescent mental health.

Abstract

Anemia is a major public health issue globally, particularly among adolescent girls, with significant impacts on cognitive and psychomotor development. Despite the importance of prevention, anemia remains widespread, especially in developing countries. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of various educational media in preventing anemia among adolescent girls. A scoping review was conducted following the Arksey and O'Malley framework, with articles identified from three major databases: ScienceDirect, PubMed, and Scopus. Out of 2,560 articles, seven studies met the inclusion criteria, focusing on media formats such as animated educational videos, PAKEM (Active, Creative, Effective, and Fun Learning) model, and print materials like booklets and pocketbooks. The findings reveal that interactive digital media, especially animated educational videos, were highly effective in improving adolescents' knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors regarding anemia prevention. These media, with engaging features like dynamic visuals and interactive elements, captured the attention of adolescent girls, facilitating better understanding, and behavior change. The PAKEM model also showed positive results, particularly in increasing adherence to iron supplementation. In contrast, traditional print media, while useful as supplementary tools, were less effective in engaging adolescents compared to digital media. A combined approach using both digital and print media, along with participatory methods such as peer education, was identified as the most effective strategy. These results emphasize the importance of utilizing diverse educational media to enhance anemia prevention efforts and provide valuable insights for developing comprehensive, effective health intervention strategies.

Abstract

Adolescence is a period that experiences many changes in hormonal, physical, psychological, and social aspects. If not controlled properly, these changes can lead to mental disorders in adolescents. This study aims to explore the relationship between social support and adolescent mental health through literature review. The review analyzed articles sourced from Google Scholar, PubMed, and ScienceDirect as a database with a range of publications between 2012-2022 using the keywords mental health, social support, and adolescents. There were 13 articles that met the inclusion criteria. The result showed that adolescents' mental health is largely determined by the social support surrounding them. Adolescents who lack social support from their families, teachers, and peers will result in bad effects of their mental health. The social support of the nuclear family, especially parents, played a very important role in adolescent mental health. In addition, the factor of the history of adolescents also needed to be considered as a risk factor. Therefore, there is a need for interventions in understanding social support to families, teachers, and adolescents, as well as further research in this topic.

Abstract

Stunting remains a major nutritional problem in developing countries, including Indonesia. This research aims to identify the effectiveness of stunting prevention programs in Indonesia. The research method employed in this study is a systematic review based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Article searches were conducted using five database; Scopus, ScienceDirect, ProQuest, Google Scholar, and Portal Garuda. The inclusion criteria for this research are articles published in the last 10 years, from 2014 to 2023, with a population in the Indonesian region. Based on the reviewed articles, it was found that the most effective stunting prevention measures include providing nutritional education to influential parties such as community health workers, mothers of toddler, and women of childbearing age or prospective mothers, interprofessional collaboration, and supplementary feeding. Trained community health workers are capable of reducing the stunting rates. Therefore the goverment should stengthen community health worker training to optimize stunting prevention through nutritional education.

Abstract

Background: Stunting is a condition where a child is physically too short for their age, which can cause problems for both their physical and cognitive abilities in the future. Stunting is known to be caused not only by the characteristics of the toddler but also by various factors, even beyond health, making stunting management policies crucial in overcoming stunting. Purpose: To map policies for managing stunting in children aged 24-59 months. Method: A scoping review was conducted using literature searches in the Science Direct and PubMed Central databases using the keywords "stunting AND policy OR treatment OR intervention OR reduction OR governance program OR policy report OR policy research AND children aged 24-59 months," resulting in 7,567 articles. These articles were then screened, resulting in nine articles that truly met the research objectives. Results: Policymakers in various countries have implemented a variety of stunting management policies, ranging from improving toddler diets, exclusive breastfeeding campaigns, improving maternal factors, improving health services, improving access to nutrition, to related agricultural policies, food security, and poverty alleviation. Conclusion: The incidence of stunting in toddlers in various countries is influenced by various factors, not just health, so its management requires support from various sectors. Stunting can be caused by the characteristics of the toddlers themselves, so treatment can include providing complementary feeding or improving the diet of children aged 6-23 months, as well as providing micronutrient powder containing iron. Furthermore, it is necessary to control maternal characteristics, such as the mother's age at marriage, the mother's education, and the mother's BMI during pregnancy.   Keywords: Policy; Stunting Management; Toddlers Aged 24-59 Months. Metode: Penelitian scoping review dengan penelusuran literatur pada database Science Direct dan PubMed Central menggunakan kata kunci “stunting AND policy OR treatment OR intervention OR reduction OR governance program OR policy report OR policy research AND children age 24-59 months” yang menghasilkan 7,567 artikel.

Abstract

Introduction: Providing optimal nutritional interventions during critical ages can save children from the risk of malnutrition and long-term health effects such as growth disorders, cognitive disorders, illness, and death. Although the WHO has issued guidelines for community-based nutritional interventions, their implementation varies across regions. To explore the impact of community-based nutrition interventions on children with undernutrition aged 6–23 months. Methods: This study used the reporting guidelines from the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA), which have been registered with PROSPERO with registration number CRD420251008033. The search strategy employed the Population-Intervention-Comparisons-Outcomes (PICO) framework. The search was conducted using databases from Scopus, PubMed, and ProQuest. Risk of bias assessment used the critical appraisal tool from the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI). Results: 13 articles were reviewed in this systematic review, consisting of 9 RCTs and four quasi-experimental studies. Community-based nutrition interventions identified in the literature review included nutrition education for parents or caregivers of children with malnutrition, such as stunting, wasting, underweight, or anemia, aged 6–23 months. Other interventions included behavior change communication, complementary feeding practices, or food supplementation, as well as integrated community health programs and cash transfer and economic-support models. Conclusion: Community-based nutrition interventions, particularly nutrition education, can significantly improve mothers' knowledge and behavior in managing malnutrition. However, interventions will have a greater impact when combined with other interventions, such as behavior change communication, food supplementation, cash transfers, and integrated programs across various sectors. These findings can serve as a basis for policy formulation and implementing malnutrition prevention programs targeting vulnerable groups through targeted and sustainable community-based nutrition interventions.
