Abstract

Computational thinking is an approach to understanding and solving complex problems by applying computational concepts and techniques. This study uses a bioinformatics database to analyze the computational thinking test question items qualitatively and quantitatively. The method used in this study is mixed, with the research design being a convergent parallel design. The qualitative data collection technique is a sheet of suggestions, inputs, and comments from experts in assessment in education, computational thinking, and bioinformatics. In contrast, the quantitative data collection technique is an expert assessment sheet and a test of questions to 127 pre-service biology teachers by producing reliability values and an infit-outfit index. The results obtained qualitatively show that CTT has high recency and complexity, and there are improvements related to the language and multiple answer options used. The quantitative results showed that the computational thinking problem was included in the very feasible category with a value of 91.83; the reliability value that was included in the category was very low, but each item was included in the accepted category with an infit-outfit index range of 0.7-1.3. Based on these results, following up on the measurement of students' computational thinking more widely using CTT is interesting.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the application of performance and peer assessment to students' scientific work through a STEM-based virtual laboratory learning. The research design was used the One Group Pretest-Posttest and One-Shot Case Study. The research was carried out from July to September 2020 at Chemistry Education Department, one of the universities in Indonesia. The research subjects were chemistry education students for the 2018/2019 Academic Year with a purposive sampling technique. The research data was taken from the performance assessment observation sheet given before and after the laboratory practice learning process and the peer assessment questionnaire. The data listed on the observation sheet and questionnaire are then calculated for the percentage. Based on research results, it can be concluded that the implementation of performance and peer assessment of students' scientific work through STEM-based virtual laboratory learning are very competent criteria at 86% and competent at 84%. The results of the paired sample t-test of students' scientific work abilities assessed using the performance assessment have a Sig. (2- tailed) the value below 0.05, which is 0.000, where there is a difference in the average results of initial and final observations using performance assessment through STEM-based virtual laboratory learning. One sample t-test of students' scientific work abilities assessed using performance and peer assessment has Sig. (2- tailed) values of 0.011 and 0.002 indicate that the mean score of students’ scientific work is 75.

Abstract

Digital-based learning can mediate technical barriers and create a support system that enhances the effectiveness of education. This study aims to develop biology learning media, DigitalWIV-S, to enhance the inquiry skills and digital literacy of prospective science teachers. The development method follows Hannafin & Peck's model, which includes the phases of Needs Assessment, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The research findings indicate that DigitalWIV-S, as a biology learning media, is deemed appropriate and received positive feedback from students. The evaluation of digital literacy is excellent across cognitive, affective, and conative aspects. Students' inquiry skills are very good in problem orientation and data collection; however, abilities in problem formulation, hypothesis structuring, data analysis, and summarizing are categorized as moderate among the students. The developed media for the PCR and Electrophoresis concepts help students understand these topics better, thereby enhancing their inquiry skills and digital literacy. Additionally, the media addresses the limitations of equipment and materials in modern biotechnology practicums.

Abstract

Abstract

The goals of the study were as follows: i) to design an active science learning activity on stoichiometry for grade 10 students, ii) to evaluate the academic achievement of grade 10 students after receiving an active science learning activity on stoichiometry, and iii) to investigate the perspectives of grade 10 students regarding an active science learning activity on stoichiometry. The research utilized a sample group consisting of 41 students who were enrolled in the tenth grade during the second semester of the academic year 2022. The research tools provided participants with active science learning lessons. A test of the kids’ academic prowess as well as their thoughts on the use of hands-on scientific learning activities will be administered. The mean, the standard deviation, and a one-sample t-test were the types of statistics that were utilized in the investigation. The following is an outline of what the research found: i) the appropriateness of the active science learning activities was judged to be the highest level, ii) the academic achievement of grade 10 students after receiving the active science learning activities on stoichiometry had an average score that was higher than the criteria of 70% with a statistical significance at the .05 level; and iii) the opinions of students on the implementation of active science learning activities on stoichiometry were in the agree level.

Abstract

Currently, plug-and-unplugged activities for learning statistics are needed to determine students' mindsets when solving statistical problems manually, using calculations without programming as an unplugged activity and for data analysis as a plug activity. This research analyzes computational thinking self-efficacy in pre-service biology teachers by implementing plug-and-unplugged activities in statistics learning. The research method used is a case study with a computational thinking self-efficacy questionnaire instrument. The sample used was 107 pre-service biology teachers at a university in Indonesia who received plug-and-unplugged activities in statistics learning for one semester. The programs used in plug activities are the R and SPSS applications. The research results show that 43% of pre-service biology teachers' computational thinking self-efficacy is in the good category, 26% is in the moderate category, 16% is in the very good category, 10% is in the low category, and the rest are very low. Meanwhile, if we look at each component of self-efficacy, computational thinking, decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction, and algorithmic thinking are each in the moderate category. This indicates that plug-and-unplugged activities can initiate computational thinking skills in pre-service biology teachers. It is necessary to routinely provide activities or learning activities that can improve the computational thinking of pre-service biology teachers because of the need in this digital era

Abstract

World is now rapidly changed by human activities that effect to environment and all of us. Process and product of science and technology transformed our knowledge and way of life to modern society. Local knowledge and scientific knowledge are related to means of co-learning space. Science education should play its importance roles and goals to use science and technology for sustainable development. The aim of this study was to compare Thai and Indonesian novice science teacher students in science attitude on environmental conservation based on local wisdom of Baduy’s society. The subjects were 95 of Thai and 71 of Indonesian novice science teacher students. They were asked indigenous knowledge for preserving natural resources and community practices. Attitude on environmental conservation is explored and explained through the scientific literacy test.  The results showed that mean score of Thai novice science teacher students had better than Indonesian movice science teacher students and significantly differences at .05 level of statistics. Need future studies which concern to improve science attitude and scientific literacy in the teacher education program.
