Abstract

Natural durability of each bamboo species is different, thus information on natural durability of bamboo species is important for its utilization. This paper investigates the natural resistance of bamboo species against subterranean termites as a basis for species classification. Twenty species of bamboo from various regions in Indonesia (West Java, Banten, the Central of Java, Lampung and Bogor Botanical Garden) were tested against subterranean termites Coptotermes curvignathus Holmgren according to SNI 7204-2014. Parameters observed were weight loss percentage of bamboo, survival rate of the termites and degree of attack (subjectively). Results showed that based on the weight loss, three bamboo species could be grouped into resistance class I, five species into class II, three species into class III, seven species as class IV and two species as class V. Based on the survival rate of the termites, one of the bamboo species was classified in class I, four species in class II, one species in class III, 11 species in class IV, and three species in class V. Furthermore, according to the degree of attack, four species were heavily damaged, while 16 species showed moderately damage. From the result, it can be concluded that one species of bamboo namely apus (Gigantochloa apus) has the highest resistance class (class I), and four other species of bamboo namely hitam (G. atroviolacea), kuring (G. kuring), india/tulda (Bambusa tulda) and lemang (Schizostachyum brachycladum), were classified in resistance class II. In the utlization, the five species of bamboo can be used without preservation, while the remaining 15 species of bamboo in resistance class III V should be preserved before using.

Abstract

The resistance of twenty bamboo species from different regions of Indonesia were tested against drywood termites (Cryptotermes cynocephalus Light.). Each bamboo species was cut into dimension of 5 cm × 2.5 cm × 1 cm. The test was conducted according to SNI 7207-2014. Parameters mass loss percentage of bamboo, survival rate of the termites, and degree of attack (subjectively) were observed as the basic to classify the resistance of bamboo against drywood termites. According to the mass loss percentage, the bamboo species were assigned into five groups: two bamboo species as resistance class I, six bamboo species as class II, five bamboo species as class III, four bamboo species as class IV, and three bamboo species as class V. Based on the survival rate of the termites, the natural resistance of bamboo could be assigned into five groups: two bamboo species as resistance class I, one species as class II, ten bamboo species as class III, five bamboo species as class IV, and two bamboo species as class V. The classification according to the degree of attack showed that two bamboo species experienced severely attack (38 - 40.5% / score 90), while the rest eighteen bamboo species had medium attack (18.4 - 34.9% / score 70).

Abstract

This research aimed to understand the softening behaviour and viscoelastic property of wood, rattan, and bamboo as lignocellulosic materials. Nine years-old fast growing teak wood [Tectona grandis L.f.], rattan [Calamus sp.], and 3 years-old andong bamboo [Gigantochloa pseudoarundinaceae (Steud.) Widjaja] were used for the experiments. The samples were taken from the bottom, middle and upper parts for wood and rattan, and that for bamboo were cut from the 1st to 20th internodes. Static bending tests were carried out in fresh (green) as control samples, air-dried, and softened by microwave heating (MW) for 1 min to determine modulus of rupture (MOR) and modulus of elasticity (MOE). The results showed that the MOR and MOE values of wood, rattan, and bamboo increased from fresh to air-dried condition, and decreased by MW. When compared at the same density, drastic increase was observed for the normalized MOR value in air-dried of rattan, i.e. 2.5 fold. However, the decreasing of all the normalized MOR values were almost the same, i.e. 0.5 fold when they were softened by MW. Remarkably increase was also appeared for the normalized MOE value in air-dried of rattan, i.e. 3.0 fold and decreased to almost zero by MW. These results indicated that rattan was more easily bent, followed by bamboo and then wood. Hydrothermal properties of chemical components significantly affected the changes of strength (MOR) and elastic properties (MOE). However, the differences in bending strength of wood, rattan, and bamboo were more likely due to differences in their anatomical structures.

Abstract

Background: Islamic boarding schools (pesantren), as boarding Islamic educational institutions, play a strategic role in shaping the character of their students (students). However, they face serious challenges related to disaster risks, particularly earthquakes and fires, due to overcrowding and a lack of mitigation systems. Jabal Noer Islamic Boarding School in Sidoarjo, located in an earthquake-prone zone and home to hundreds of teenage students, exhibits low levels of emergency preparedness, including first aid knowledge and skills. Given this high vulnerability, educational interventions in the form of emergency response and first aid training involving the entire Islamic boarding school community are needed to strengthen disaster response capacity and create a safe and prepared learning environment. Purpose: To improve the knowledge and skills of students within Islamic boarding schools in disaster preparedness in the face of emergencies. Method: The activity was held on July 21, 22, and 23, and August 2, 2025, at the Jabal Noer Islamic Boarding School, Geluran Taman, Sidoarjo Regency, East Java. Twenty-six participants, consisting of students and one security guard, were involved. The material was delivered through focus group discussions (FGDs) between D4 K3 lecturers and the boarding school administrators, who also formed the SIGAP cadre. Knowledge and skills were measured using a questionnaire, assessing participants' attendance, practical simulation skills, and students' socio-cultural involvement in the boarding school environment. A descriptive and quantitative evaluation was conducted by assessing the level of change in knowledge and skills before and after the educational activities (pre-test) and after the educational activities (post-test). Results: Data obtained showed that the level of knowledge and skills of participants before the educational activities (pre-test) achieved an average score of 24.8 points with a standard deviation of 16.86, while the level of knowledge and skills of participants after the educational activities (post-test) achieved an average score of 74.0 points with a standard deviation of 16.07. The intervention improved participants' ability to practice basic skills such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation and minor injury management. The intervention also successfully formed SIGAP cadres and provided safety facilities, which overall strengthened the preparedness of the Islamic boarding school environment. Conclusion: This community service activity successfully increased disaster preparedness capacity through the formation of SIGAP cadres and first aid training. The increased knowledge and skills of SIGAP cadres also made a positive contribution and strengthened the institution in disaster response, injury management, earthquake and fire preparedness, and disaster impact prevention. Suggestion: SIGAP cadres are expected to conduct routine training and periodic simulations. It is also hoped that educational activities and training in disaster preparedness can be integrated into the extracurricular curriculum through collaboration with external institutions such as the Indonesian Red Cross and the Regional Disaster Management Agency. Abstract

The internet has profoundly transformed interfaith relations, offering an unprecedented global arena for dialogue and community building. Yet this transformative power is shadowed by a growing threat: the digital space is increasingly weaponized as a battleground for religious tensions, fueled by hate speech, misinformation, and targeted harassment. The absence of robust legal and ethical frameworks tailored to the complexities of online interaction leaves interfaith communities vulnerable and undermines genuine cooperation. This article introduces the conceptual model of a “digital sanctuary”—a deliberately designed and protected online space where diverse faiths can coexist and flourish. Achieving this ideal is not an organic outcome of technology but requires intentional, multi-faceted efforts from all stakeholders. The paper critically examines regulatory gaps and ethical dilemmas obstructing interfaith harmony online, highlighting the limitations of fragmented national laws in a borderless environment and analyzing the responsibilities of technology platforms. We advocate moving beyond simple content moderation toward a proactive, rights-based approach that prioritizes the safety and dignity of religious minorities. By proposing a model of “digital jurisprudence,” the article calls for holistic guidelines that extend beyond traditional statutes. These include policy recommendations for algorithmic transparency, community-led dialogue, and greater international cooperation to establish standards that balance freedom of expression with protection from religious incitement. Ultimately, the paper contends that the future of peaceful interfaith coexistence depends on transforming the digital realm from a passive, ungoverned space into a resilient ecosystem where principles of mutual respect are systematically protected and nurtured

Abstract

One of the main instruments for implementing democracy in Indonesia is the General Election (Pemilu), which serves to elect the President, the House of Representatives (DPR), the Regional Representative Council (DPD), and the Regional House of Representatives (DPRD). To elect members of the DPR, DPD, and DPRD, Indonesia adopts an open-list proportional representation system where candidates are elected based on the highest number of votes. This system offers significant advantages by ensuring more accurate political representation and proportional seat distribution, thereby valuing each vote. This article focuses on critically examining the application of the open-list proportional system in the 2024 DPRD election in Central Java. The research method used is a socio-legal approach with qualitative analysis, emphasizing the implementation of open proportionality in the second-level DPRD elections in Central Java. The findings reveal legal uncertainty in the Election Law, particularly in Article 426, which contains structural loopholes that undermine the core principles of open proportional representation and potentially harm the essence of democracy itself. This issue was evident in the 2024 DPRD election in Central Java, where manipulation of the people's choice through resignation or dismissal from party membership, along with formalistic judicial decisions, created a legal gap that was exploited to disregard legitimate votes. This not only invalidates the legitimacy of individual representatives but also raises serious questions about who truly holds sovereignty in determining the composition of the legislature.

Abstract

The growth of housing development in Sragen Regency, an agricultural region, has put pressure on the sustainability of agricultural land. This study aims to analyze housing growth and assess the role of local governments in controlling agricultural land conversion. The research method used is a juridical-empirical legal research with a qualitative approach. Data were obtained through interviews with relevant regional officials, legislation, and literature reviews. The results show that housing development reaches approximately 1,000 units per year, while the level of fulfillment of new housing needs is approximately 87% with a backlog of approximately 28,000 units. The local government has carried out a controlling role through spatial planning instruments, spatial utilization permits, the Suitability of Spatial Utilization Activities (KKPR), as well as coordination between regional officials and the provision of incentives to farmers. However, this role has not been optimal due to a disconnect between the role conception as formulated in spatial planning policies and regulations and the implementation of the local government's role in controlling agricultural land conversion in the field.
