Abstract

Students' writing quality in academic writing must still be investigated. Especially in terms of coherence and arrangement between sentences, sometimes inaccuracies cause sentences written to be less meaningful. This study aims to: 1) describe the use of discourse markers in the final undergraduate student article projects, especially in the discussion section, and 2) explain how far the quality of undergraduate students' writing is in applying discourse markers. Discourse Markers are conjunctions used as hooks between sentences so that the linkages between sentences are maintained, and the meaning of the sentences can be easily understood. This study applies the theory of Discourse Markers by Fraser (2009), which is complemented by an explanation of material on Academic Writing based on the book Writing Academic English by Oshima and Hogue (2006). The instrument is in the form of documentation. This study's qualitative data for analysis came from 11 undergraduate students' final project articles focused on the discussion part only. Furthermore, the data is categorized into three types of Discourse Markers: contrastive, elaborative, and inferential. After that, the analysis results are also provided in the form of the quality of student writing which has been categorized as appropriate and less appropriate.

Abstract

Abstract. Classroom learning is an active interaction between the lecturer and students. In its implementation, support from both parties is needed to achieve the learning objectives as expected. Discourse Markers (DMs) are tools used by lecturer and students in the classroom to control their conversation so that the core of the conversation is readily accepted. Since Indonesian students belong to EFL learners, using DMs between native and non-native speakers at the school is an exciting discussion to explore. Of course, many distinctions between both may enrich our insight into DMs. The subjects of this research are two lecturers who teach virtually via Zoom; one of the lecturers is a native speaker, and the other one is a non-native speaker. The qualitative descriptive design will be applied in this research. The data are taken from the learning Zoom recording in the English study program and uploaded to the YouTube channel. It will be transcribed into writing, and then the transcripts will be analyzed to find variations and the functions of discourse markers used by lecturers in the classroom. The theory applied in this study is Biber 2007) theory about linking adverbials or DMs. This research's expected result is that the study will show the similarities and differences between DMs used by native and non-native speaker lecturers.

Abstract

This paper presents an evaluation of an English for specific purposes (ESP) curriculum using the social semiotic perspective. This perspective highlights the importance of authenticity, multimodality, and communicative competence in ESP teaching and learning. Five main components of the ESP curriculum at the Port and Shipping Management Department of a Maritime Polytechnic in Indonesia were evaluated, including the syllabus, lesson plans, resources, teaching activities, and assessment. In conducting the evaluation, the authors developed an evaluation framework based on three existing frameworks, namely Stufflebeam’s context input process product (CIPP) model for evaluation, Kaewpet’s ESP program evaluation, and Tsou and Chen’s ESP program evaluation. Multiple data collection methods were used and multiple perspectives of research participants were invited. The findings of the study revealed that there were several problems in the ESP curriculum of the Port and Shipping Management Department. The main problem was the poorly designed syllabus that has caused drawbacks on the other components, such as irrelevant and unauthentic teaching materials and activities, low variety of teaching media, lack of multimodal resources used in the classroom, and low validity and reliability of assessments. Pedagogical implications regarding the results of the evaluation are also discussed.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not there is a correlation between the critical thinking skills of students and the level of reading comprehension that they demonstrate. To examine this relationship, the researchers employed a reading comprehension test adapted from the TOEFL proficiency framework alongside a critical thinking assessment. The data were evaluated using Pearson's Product-Moment Correlation, which demonstrated that there is a relationship between the two variables that is statistically significant. The results demonstrated a strong positive correlation between students’ levels of critical thinking and their reading comprehension scores. Moreover, students with high critical thinking abilities had significantly enhanced performance on the reading comprehension assessment relative to their peers with low critical thinking capabilities. These findings suggest that critical thinking plays a crucial role in the process of understanding written texts and may have meaningful implications for students’ academic development, particularly in the context of language learning.

Abstract

Academic success among EFL learners is closely linked to their foundational skills in reading comprehension. However, many students continue to struggle with understanding English texts within a limited timeframe. This difficulty stems from the fundamental purpose of reading: to comprehend written content in order to follow specific instructions. Since cognitive and metacognitive strategies are interrelated where metacognitive strategies oversee and regulate cognitive processes, their combined use is considered effective in enhancing reading comprehension skills. This study aims to investigate the extent to which cognitive and metacognitive reading strategies simultaneously impact EFL students' reading comprehension using mixed methods (quantitative-qualitative) of one-group pre-experimental design. Data were obtained through English literacy pre-test and post-tests, questionnaires, and classroom observation. The treatments were cognitive and metacognitive reading strategies taught by two expert teachers to 60 EFL students. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics to investigate EFL students' reading comprehension and their reading strategy awareness before and after treatment. Inferential statistics using paired sample t-tests revealed a significant difference between EFL students’ reading comprehension before and after treatment (p-value<0.05). Analysis of multiple linear regression also revealed a significant impact of cognitive and metacognitive reading strategies on EFL students’ reading comprehension simultaneously (p-value<0.05 and FComputed>FTable) with an impact of 43.8% (moderate). Qualitative data analyzed descriptively revealed that almost all EFL students showed positive attitudes during the treatment given. This study is expected to present significant contributions for teachers to implement various cognitive and metacognitive reading strategies in their reading classes to enhance EFL students’ reading comprehension and assist them in overcoming the difficulties they face during the reading process.

Abstract

There has to be a new way of thinking about reading in this technological age. This approach is called a multimodal approach. It is an approach that contributes to several modes in the reading sources. To explore students' attitudes towards reading through a multimodal approach in terms of their conative attitudes’ perception, this study employs this approach. This study used a descriptive quantitative method to fulfill the purpose. Fifteen students were purposively selected as the sample. They had the same characteristics, such as having completed the previous reading class. Ten steps were involved in conducting the study. The data were collected using a closed-ended questionnaire. A statistical analysis using SPSS was performed on the collected data. According to the numbers, four out of the eight categories are significantly high, accounting for 46.7%. It can be concluded that students have a pleasant impression. The statements made by the students demonstrate that they remained focused on reading through the channel informed by the teacher, participated in class, avoided procrastination with classmates, and engaged in reading. It can be concluded that based on the quantitative data, the students’ conative attitude perception towards the implementation of the multimodal approach in their reading class is positive.
