Abstract

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacts students’ mental health. Most of them may experience depression. Due to restrictions and social distancing during the pandemic, counseling may not be applicable in detecting the problems. Therefore, an Islamic spiritual mindfulness-based application called DAHAGA is created in order to detect and reduce depression. It is believed that this innovative app could reduce mental health problems among students. Objective: This study aimed to determine the effect of DAHAGA on reducing depression among nursing students during the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia. Methods: This was a quasi-experimental study with a comparison group pretest/posttest design conducted from May to June 2020. Seventy students were selected using convenience sampling, of which 35 were assigned in an experimental group and a comparison group. The validated Indonesian Version-Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) was used for data collection. Paired t-test and independent t-test were used for data analysis. Results: There was a significant effect of DAHAGA on depression (p < 0.001). The level of depression after intervention (mean 11.49, SD 4.49) was lower than it before the intervention (mean 17.20, SD 4.94). Additionally, there was a significant difference in depression level between the experimental and comparison groups after the intervention with a p-value of < 0.001. Conclusion: The DAHAGA is proven effective in reducing depression. Therefore, this study offers a new and innovative app that fits with the COVID-19 pandemic to help Muslim students maintain their health status. The findings also support Islamic spiritual mindfulness as a part of nursing interventions among psychiatric nurses to deal with mental health problems, especially depression.

Abstract

Violence behaviour poses a potential risk of physical harm to oneself or others. Violence behaviour must be promptly addressed by providing intervention to avoid detrimental impacts on the patient, others, or the surrounding environment. This research aims to identify the types of interventions for patients with violent behaviour in psychiatric hospitals. This review adopts a scoping review approach, following the analysis procedure by Arksey and O'Malley. Articles were identified using the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses) method. Inclusion criteria for this review article include English or Indonesian language articles, original articles, articles using quantitative, qualitative, and mixed research methods published within the last 5 years. From the review results of 1.128 articles, 8 articles met the inclusion criteria. The analysis results indicate various types of interventions proven to be effective in reducing violent behaviour in patients in psychiatric hospitals. Treatments involving physical, psychological, and belief-based activities are suitable for reducing violent behaviour in patients in psychiatric hospitals. Furthermore, to determine the real impact of reducing violent behaviour, supplemental research is needed to develop interventions in patients in psychiatric hospitals.

Abstract

Intrapersonal conflict is a condition where an individual has two desires that cannot be fulfilled simultaneously. This research aims to identify the description of intrapersonal conflict among nurses. The study design uses a scoping review method. Articles were identified using the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses) method. Inclusion criteria for this review article include articles in English or Indonesian, original articles, and articles that use quantitative, qualitative, and mixed research methods published within the last 5 years. A search of articles in this review yielded 819 articles, and the review identified 4 articles that met the inclusion criteria and were subsequently analyzed. The results of the analysis indicate the description of intrapersonal conflict among nurses, namely: (1) Career-related conflicts, hindered by further study; (2) Family-related conflicts. Nurses want to contribute to the family's economy but their partner asks them to take care of the children and the house; (3) Work-family life conflicts or sleep duration; (4) Religion-related conflicts, with an example of a Muslim nurse newly employed at a hospital but facing a mandatory rule to remove the hijab. The conclusion of this review article shows various descriptions of intrapersonal conflict among nurses and suggests that research be conducted to reduce or manage these conflicts.

Abstract

The risk of violent behavior is a problem that most often arises in schizophrenic. The inability to control emotions will lead to aggressive behavior both verbally and non-verbally directed at oneself, others and the surrounding environment. Assertive Acceptance Commitment Therapy (AACT) is one of the interventions that can be given by integrating Assertive Training (AT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). AACT can provide skills for assertive behavior so that patients will be able to accept the problems experienced with adaptive behavior and have a commitment to maintain that behavior in all conditions. The purpose of this study was to apply and analyze the results of the AACT intervention in schizophrenic patients at risk of violent behavior. The method used in this research is a case study, namely research that aims to investigate an existing event or phenomenon. Data were analyzed by directly interpreting and describe the results of calculating the increase in the GAFR score and then explaining by using textual and discourse analysis. The results of this study showed that there was a significant improvement in the General Adaptive Function Response (GAFR) score after the AACT intervention was given. The average increase in GAFR score was 16,33 (intensive 2). It means that, all patients experience an increase in the ability of Adaptive Function Response. AACT can help schizophrenic patients with violence to have a more assertive behavior, accept the problem, their condition, and commit to maintaining adaptive behavior so that clients can control their anger.

Abstract

Emotional management, combined with oxytocin massage and breast care, offers a comprehensive approach to boost prolactin release, enhance milk production, and improve breastfeeding outcomes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of combining emotional management with oxytocin massage and breast care in increasing oxytocin and prolactin hormone levels to address oligogalactia in working postpartum mothers. A quasi-experimental study was conducted at Kudus Community Health Center, Kudus Regency, Central Java, Indonesia, from January to March 2024. A total of 93 postpartum mothers were randomly assigned to three groups: (1) emotional management with oxytocin massage; (2) emotional management with breast care; and (3) lactation education only. Blood samples were collected before and after the interventions to measure oxytocin and prolactin levels. The present study found that emotional management combined with oxytocin massage significantly increased oxytocin levels from 505.0±264.0 pg/mL to 600.0±231.3 pg/mL (mean difference: 103 pg/mL; p=0.002) and prolactin levels from 191.0±67.3 ng/mL to 233.0±86.8 ng/mL (mean difference: 27 ng/mL; p=0.001). The emotional management and breast care group showed a smaller increase in oxytocin (362.0±175.1 pg/mL to 418.0±185.1 pg/mL; mean difference: 23 pg/mL; p=0.048) and a significant increase in prolactin (195.0±48.8 ng/mL to 255.0±82.3 ng/mL; mean difference: 38 ng/mL; p=0.049). In contrast, the lactation education group showed no significant changes in oxytocin (p=0.756) or prolactin levels (p=0.341). In conclusion, emotional management combined with oxytocin massage significantly increased both oxytocin and prolactin levels, suggesting that integrating emotional management and oxytocin massage may be an effective strategy for postpartum lactation support.

Abstract

Background: Schizophrenia is a major mental health problem in the world that requires more attention. Patients with schizophrenia are at higher risk of poor psychological well-being and violent behaviors as expression of anger and delusion. Mindfulness  alone is considered less efficient so it needs to be developed with technology, as such further technological development regarding its application is needed. Objective: This study aimed to determine the effects of spiritual mindfulness intervention through the SI-DEPAPU application on the ability to control anger and perform activities of daily living (ADL) among schizophrenic patients. Methods: This study used a pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design with a control group. The samples were 60 schizophrenic patients randomly selected and divided into two groups. The intervention group was given four sessions of mindfulness in two weeks through the SI-DEPAPU application. This study used the anger management ability questionnaire developed by Sadipun et al. (2018) to measure the patient's ability to control anger and the North American Nursing Diagnosis Association (NANDA) questionnaire by Wilkinson (2016) to measure ADL. The instrument was tested for its validity among 20 schizophrenic patients with a risk of violent behaviors, and the results were valid and reliable in which the r-count > r-table (0.444), the control group was given standard hospital care. Results: The results showed that the patient’s ability to control anger and perform ADL increased with p=0.000 and p=0.005,  (p = 0,000 < 0,05) respectively. The intervention group had a higher mean score than the control group. Conclusion: Mindfulness spiritual interventions through the SI-DEPAPU application could help schizophrenic patients control anger and increase their ADL.
