Abstract

Abstract

This experimental study investigates the effect of air supply configurations on the combustion performance and thermal efficiency of wood pellet briquettes in rocket stoves for household energy use. With increasing global demand for energy and the depletion of fossil fuels, the shift to renewable biomass fuels, such as wood pellets, is essential to reduce carbon emissions and enhance energy efficiency. The study evaluates four airflow configurations: right fan only (F3), lower-left + right fans (F2+F3), two left fans (F1+F2), and all fans (F1+F2+F3). The results show that the F3 configuration achieved the fastest boiling time, highest boiling temperature, and lowest heat-loss temperature, indicating superior thermal performance. In contrast, configurations with higher airflow (F1+F2 and all fans) led to greater heat losses and slower boiling times, suggesting that excessive airflow can negatively affect efficiency. Additionally, the analysis of residual mass revealed that F3 and F2+F3 configurations produced the lowest residuals, indicating more complete combustion. This study provides important insights into optimising airflow configurations to improve the efficiency of biomass stoves. The findings offer practical implications for the design and operation of sustainable cooking technologies, promoting energy efficiency and reducing reliance on fossil fuels in households, particularly in rural areas.

Abstract

This study examined the effectiveness of video tutorial–based learning media in improving students’ mastery of horizontal-position Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) in a technical and vocational education and training (TVET) context. The study responded to the limited evidence on position-specific digital instructional media in welding education, particularly for horizontal-position SMAW practice, which requires precise control of movement, angle, and bead formation. A pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design was employed involving 30 Grade XI students in the Mechanical Engineering program at SMKN 1 Sumatera Barat. Data were collected using a validated 30-item performance assessment covering preparation, process, and final weld quality, and were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a paired-samples t-test in IBM SPSS Statistics. The results showed a substantial improvement in students’ performance after the intervention. The mean score increased from 47.57 in the pre-test to 81.70 in the post-test, with a mean gain of 34.13 points. The paired-samples t-test revealed a statistically significant difference, t(29) = 15.25, p < 0.001, and the effect size was very large (d = 2.78). These findings indicate that video tutorial–based media can serve as an effective, low-cost, and scalable instructional tool for procedural welding skills. The study contributes to digital pedagogy in TVET by highlighting the importance of pedagogical fit in technology-supported practical instruction.

Abstract

Axial flux type BLDC motors primary issue is the high operating temperature of the stator and winding components, which can lower system efficiency and hasten the deterioration of the quality of the insulation material. This study is to examine the effects of geometric alterations to the cooling system, such as axial fins on the housing side and curved fins on the casing, on the temperature distribution of a 5-kW axial flux permanent magnet BLDC motor. Convection and conduction heat transport in the cooling system were modeled using ANSYS Fluent software and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation techniques. The Log Mean Temperature Difference (LMTD) and the cooling design's relative efficacy in comparison to the baseline state are the primary metrics that are examined. According to the simulation results, the maximum winding temperature may be lowered to 311 K and the cooling distribution in the rotor, casing, and housing can be improved by adopting curved fin casing and axial fin housing. As the temperature differential between the coolant and the motor surface narrows, the LMTD value drops from the initial condition (5.10 K to 13.94 K), suggesting a more effective heat transfer process. Furthermore, the cooling system's efficiency has more than doubled since its original design. Overall, the study's findings demonstrate that enhancing the cooler's geometric design can increase the BLDC motor's thermal performance and prolong component life.

Abstract

The chassis is an important part of a car which must have a strong construction to withstand the weight of the vehicle. The purpose of this research is to create a city car's chassis that can hold two passengers and then crash-test the finished product. In this research, a development method was used using SolidWorks software and the student version of ANSYS R2 2023 as software for creating chassis designs and crash test simulations. The study's findings indicate that the car frame's measurements are 2.46 meters in length, 1.33 meters in height, and 1.39 meters in width. The steel of the ASTM A36 type was utilized as the material in the computational study of the frame. The results show that increasing speed causes an increase in deformation, with the peak deformation at a speed of 100 km/h. The maximum deformation occurs at 0.007 seconds with a value of 203.51 mm at the top pillar of the car. The deformation increases from 97.196 mm at 0.0035 s to 161.22 mm at 0.0056 s. However, deformation occurs mainly in the front zone of the car frame and is not significant in the passenger zone.

Abstract

The development of lightweight electric cars for urban mobility requires efficient aerodynamic design without sacrificing space efficiency. This study presents a novel method by investigating the combination of a two-seater city car's compact dimensions and square back shape, which has not been extensively researched for low- to medium-velocity vehicles. This study's objective is to assess the design's aerodynamic performance using numerical simulations using the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) approach. The vehicle model is designed with a compact body and square back, which is commonly used in small vehicles with high maneuverability requirements. The simulations are conducted at three different air velocity levels: 10, 20, and 30 m/s. The results of the study showed an increase in the value of the drag coefficient (Cd) along with an increase in flow velocity. At a velocity of 10 m/s, the Cd value was recorded at 0.4536. When the velocity increased to 20 m/s, the drag coefficient increased slightly to 0.4563. Further increases in velocity to 30 m/s resulted in a Cd value of 0.4581. This Cd value shows the consistency of aerodynamic performance with increasing velocity, with fluctuations that remain within the efficiency limits of lightweight vehicles. The pressure distribution contour shows high-pressure accumulation at the front and low pressure at the rear of the vehicle, which generates large turbulent wakes in the rear area and contributes to increased drag. These findings indicate that the square rear body design faces significant aerodynamic challenges. Therefore, design strategies such as adding a rear spoiler, using a rear diffuser, and optimizing the rear body angle are suggested as potential solutions to improve flow efficiency.
