Abstract

Puberty is an important stage in a child's development marked by significant physical and emotional changes. Children at the Ladang Ladong Community Learning Center (CLC), Simunjan, face this phase amidst limited information and support. This research aims to explore children's perspectives at CLC Ladang Ladong regarding their experiences during puberty, especially regarding physical and emotional changes. Using a qualitative approach and in-depth interview methods, data was collected from several puberty-aged children who attended CLC. The results showed that children have varying understandings about changes in their bodies and emotions. Some of them felt confused and lacked self-confidence, while others showed good adaptation. Factors such as communication with parents, the role of teachers, and the social environment contribute to how they deal with these changes. This research underlines the importance of holistic education and better emotional support from the surrounding environment in helping children face puberty.

Abstract

The future of the Indonesian is now seriously threatened by the high incidence of smoking behaviors among Indonesian adolescents. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and factors associated with smoking behavior among high school students residing in tobacco-producing regions in Indonesia. Students' smoking behaviors, sociodemographic traits, and exposure to tobacco marketing were all gathered through a cross-sectional survey. In order to participate in this study, 210 junior high school students answered questions about their smoking habits. The results showed nearly one in five students reported currently smoking (19%), while 22.9% had experimented with smoking but had already quit. More than half of the students (51.9%) reported having received at least one offer to smoke, suggesting strong social exposure to smoking within their environment. Among students who smoked, the most common motivations were the appealing taste of cigarettes (35%) and the desire to appear cool (23%), while stress relief (33.3%) was the primary reason for continuing the behavior. These results highlight how crucial it is to apply evidence-based tobacco control measures in these areas in order to lower the prevalence of adolescents smoking. The findings have implication for educators and parents to monitor tobacco use and provide assistance in quitting tobacco usage.

Abstract

Teachers, as key agents in peace education within schools, are expected to promote the development of an effective peace vision and to possess strong peace pedagogy in order to cultivate a peaceful school climate. This study aims to quantitatively describe the role of teachers in Indonesia in fostering a culture of peace in schools. The research employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive qualitative design. The sample consisted of 1,067 Indonesian teachers who provided informed consent prior to participation. Data were collected using the Teacher Peace Scale administered through Google Forms. Descriptive qualitative analysis was conducted to identify differences in teachers’ knowledge, attitudes, and skills related to peace concepts. The findings indicate that there were no significant variations in knowledge, attitudes, or skills as a function of training duration. Nevertheless, teachers are required to develop adequate knowledge, attitudes, and competencies related to peace in order to promote a peaceful school culture. These competencies constitute essential foundational capital for teachers in educating students about peace in school settings. Furthermore, the development of comprehensive and integrated peace competencies is expected to strengthen a culture of peace among teachers, enabling them to deliver peace education effectively and to recognize, analyze, and guide students’ behaviors constructively. The implications of this study provide empirical insights into the extent to which gender differences and teaching experience influence teachers’ attitudes toward instilling peace values in schools.

Abstract

Bullying is a social phenomenon that remains widespread among adolescents. The problem with bullying lies not only in its frequency but also in adolescents' lack of awareness about recognising and interpreting it as a form of violence. This study aims to examine differences in bullying awareness levels among adolescents based on gender and to re-evaluate the relevance of the male resilience vs. female sensitivity narrative. The study employs a quantitative approach using a survey design targeting adolescent. Data were analysed both descriptively and inferentially using the chi-square test to examine the relationship between gender and bullying awareness levels. The results indicate that the majority of adolescents fall into the low awareness category (60.0%), followed by the moderate category (39.4%), and only a small proportion fall into the high category (0.6%). Descriptively, females tended to have a higher proportion of low awareness compared to males. However, the results of the inferential test showed that there was no significant relationship between gender and the level of bullying awareness (p = 0.489; Cramer’s V = 0.094). These findings indicate that bullying awareness among adolescents cannot be adequately explained by gender constructs alone but is more influenced by contextual factors such as social normalisation and peer group dynamics. Consequently, bullying prevention interventions should be designed universally, emphasising the cultivation of critical awareness, empathy, and the courage to act, without relying on gender-stereotype-based approaches.

Abstract

Difficulties with emotional regulation are a key issue during adolescence as they relate to pupils’ academic, social and psychological adjustment. This study aims to describe the profile of emotional regulation difficulties among lower secondary school pupils in Yogyakarta, and to analyse differences based on gender, year group and school of origin. This study employed a quantitative approach using a descriptive–comparative survey design. The sample comprised 402 students from two junior high schools selected using purposive sampling. The instrument used was the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS-36), which measures six dimensions: Nonacceptance, Goals, Impulse, Awareness, Strategies, and Clarity. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics, Cronbach’s alpha, Pearson’s correlation, the independent samples t-test, the chi-square test, one-way ANOVA, and Tukey’s HSD post-hoc test. The results of this study indicate that the majority of pupils fell into the ‘moderate’ category for difficulties in emotion regulation (70.1%). The ‘Strategies’ dimension had the highest mean score, whilst the ‘Goals’ dimension showed the highest percentage in the ‘high’ category. Significant differences were found based on gender, with female pupils reporting higher DERS scores than male pupils. Meanwhile, differences based on school type and year group emerged in certain dimensions. These findings suggest that pupils’ difficulties with emotional regulation need to be understood in a multidimensional way and can serve as a basis for guidance and counselling teachers in designing services that are more responsive, preventative and tailored to the developmental needs of lower secondary school pupils.
