The systematic searching method was applied, and 23 articles published from 2020 until 2023 were selected for this paper. Most of them were written in Asian nations. The finding shows that hybrid learning was well received by both teachers and students. Since this teaching model paved the way and provided a new window for English language practice, it has also been underlined by many academics and is being applied in English teaching and learning. In conclusion, the hybrid learning model can be an optional language learning model in the post-pandemic era.

Abstract

Linguistic competence has had a significant influence on English language teaching. Linguistic competence is largely concerned with a notion shared by language teachers and learners when using language knowledge in real performance. English teachers are expected to have this competency. The present study aimed to examine linguistic competence in morphology teaching, which was demonstrated by an English teacher. The morphology teaching was sourced from a series of YouTube videos which were broadcast by a teacher on a Youtube channel. This study was carried out by analyzing the linguistic competence of the teacher in each video by analogizing the teacher’s knowledge with the theory from the linguistics book written by some experts. The selected books which were used to analyze were: “How English Works, A Linguistic Introduction” (Curzan & Adams, 2012); “Linguistics, An Introduction” (Radford et al., 2009); and “Contemporary Linguistic Analysis, An Introduction” (O’Grady & Archibald, 2016). The study’s findings revealed that the teacher had sufficient linguistic competence while delivering the course. The findings also assisted in recognizing that linguistic competence is a significant part of the analysis in terms of how a teacher may remain competent while providing the course. In short, linguistics is considered valuable because it may increase teacher’s awareness of language, making the teacher more competent and, hence, a better language teacher.

Abstract

The utilization of mobile-assisted language learning (MALL) enhances learning activities. As online learning modalities proliferate, Duolingo is becoming increasingly well-known but understudied as an English-learning assessment tool. This study explores the utilization of Duolingo as an English-learning assessment tool, specifically in the context of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) in Indonesia. Three Electromedical Engineering students were selected as participants, and semi-structured interviews were conducted to gather data. Thematic Analysis was employed to analyze the collected data. The findings revealed several positive impressions students had when using Duolingo as an English language skills assessment (ELSA) tool, including its engaging nature, facilitation of autonomous language skills assessment, provision of positive motivation, and improvement in vocabulary mastery. However, participants also mentioned drawbacks, such as Duolingo's inability to provide specialized Electromedical Engineering vocabulary, the use of fake images that hindered comprehension of meaning in real-life contexts, and the lack of interactivity in language skills assessment. The study recommends ESP practitioners to consider student-centered learning tools for assessing English proficiency, focusing on the test's purpose, objectives, practicality, reliability, validity, authenticity, and washback effects.

Abstract

This research explored Indonesian EFL teachers' perceptions of implementing higher-order thinking Skills (HOTS) in English language classrooms. Specifically, it attempted to explore (1) teachers' understanding of HOTS, (2) teachers' perceptions of the implementation of HOTS in their EFL classrooms, and (3) teachers' perceived obstacles in the implementation of HOTS. The research employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. Five English language teachers at a senior high school in Serang Banten Province, Indonesia, participated in this research. The data were collected using semi-structured interviews and were analyzed following Miles and Huberman's (1994) qualitative data analysis procedures. The results revealed that all participants had a good understanding of the concept of HOTS, in which the definitions of HOTS given by all the participants were related to the sub-skills of Bloom's Taxonomy. All the participants also claimed they had implemented HOTS in English language teaching and learning. However, the implementation has yet to be effective due to some obstacles, which include students' low English proficiency, teachers' lack of competencies, and limited supporting facilities such as internet access, learning media, and learning sources.

Abstract

The intention of this study was to examine how a flipped classroom with a collaborative learning approach improved the writing skills of Indonesian higher education students. To achieve the study’s aim of 48 Indonesian higher education participants, the Oxford Quick Placement Test (OQPT) was employed. They were divided into two groups: experiment and control. Following that, as a pre-test, both groups were given a written exam. The experimental class (EC) was then positioned in a flipped classroom. Students were permitted to bring smartphones to class and utilize them while learning, and the flipped classroom was equipped with an internet connection, a laptop, and a projector. The control class (CC) got standard classroom instruction. This strategy was employed until the very last session. The experimental group outperformed the control group on the post-test, according to the results of the independent samples t-test and one-way analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). Furthermore, the results revealed a significant difference in post-test performance between the EC and CC.
