Abstract

During pandemic COVID-19, higher education has made a large shift in turning synchronous learning into asynchronous learning through online learning platforms. It encourages every institution, likewise Universitas Negeri Jakarta, to provide an all-in-one technology-supported learning environment due to face this dynamic change. Therefore, UNJ has finally developed its own Learning Management System (LMS). However, since it is a new brand tool of learning and innovation, it needs to be quickly evaluated for satisfaction and optimization so that there can be proposed for improvements in the future. This research uses System Usability Scale (SUS) as the Usability evaluation methods which is distributed through Google Forms and measured the validity by SPSS software. This evaluation method has been done to 50 participants from undergraduate and graduate students of English Language Education Study Program at UNJ. It was found that the result was valid with 0,702 reliability rate. The evaluation result of LMS owned by UNJ has 83,25 SUS score which can be regarded as "Excellent" rating as well as grade “A” according to Curved Grade Scale (CGS). Despite the score of Net Promoter Scale categorized as “Promoter”, it suggests further research investigated in other departments of UNJ to meet different expectations. Abstract

Teachers in the 21st century must be capable of new literacy, such as digital literacy, technology literacy, and human literacy. There has been a lot of research done in this area, but this is one of the more recent studies that relates to technological literacy. This research will focus on the program evaluation of the use of technology literacy in English classrooms. The study aimed to determine whether technology literacy was used in the classrooms, to evaluate teachers’ competence in the use of technology literacy, and to determine the students’ needs in the use of computing applications in the English classroom. A needs analysis was used as the research methodology. To get the data, an observation sheet was obtained as the instrument. The questionnaires were adapted from Blended Learning Innovation for IRCC Settlement Language Training by Fahy et. al. (2016). The findings confirmed some facts. First, despite the challenges of technology literacy applied in the classroom, teachers felt the positive impacts on teaching and learning in the classroom. Second, in the use of technology applications, it has met some of the students' needs in learning English. Third, in terms of evaluation, the teacher did not meet enough qualifications as a qualified teacher to use technology in the classroom. As a result, it influenced the teaching-learning process, and they were unable to instruct successfully. The researcher proposed that the school hold a workshop or training for the teachers to improve their teaching skills using technology literacy. The researcher recommended further study on the integration of the technology literacy used in the English syllabus and the teaching materials. Abstract

Abstract

Students in higher education institutions require digital literacy and 21st-century skills for their learning activities. Despite the reality of students born into digital technologies that have become increasingly integrated into learning activities, no studies have looked into the situation, particularly study in the context of postgraduate students. This study aims to determine the extent of Master of English Language Education (MELE) students’ incorporation of digital literacy and 21st-century skills within their learning activities. This study was carried out using a survey research method. The sample consisted of 34 MELE students from Jakarta State University enrolled in various gap years (2019-2021) in the Master English Language Education department. The data were collected using 24 questionnaire items. The instruments were employed based on the International Society for  Technology in Education (ISTE) Student Standard and disseminated using Google Form. The findings revealed that most MELE students had a high level of digital literacy and 21st-century skills. However, some students marked themselves as having low levels on it. Thus, the researchers recommended that the students enhance their engagement with technology, incorporate 21st-century skills, and develop digital literacy according to today’s requirements for completing their learning goals.

Abstract

AbstractTo face the global era, students in the twenty-first century must master the English language confidently and critically. One of the techniques for improving students' English language abilities is digital literacy. This research will look at how digital literacy is implemented to improve students' ability to master the English language and what challenges learners face when participating in these activities for elementary school students. It is an analysis based on the cultural characteristics of the western and eastern countries. The research methodology was content analysis. The writer gathered information by reading articles about the use of digital literacy in learning English. The findings verified some facts, such as the notion that using digital literacy in the classroom increases primary pupils' motivation for learning English. It also encourages students to learn new languages. Second, some children continue to have difficulty with digital literacy. Not to mention, some schools do not provide enough tools for students to apply digital literacy, which has an impact on classroom teaching and learning. However, further research on providing appropriate digital literacy based on kids' age or level of learning is required. Keywords: Eastern and Western countries, digital literacy, English language learning, young learner

Abstract

Due to the explosive growth of technology, teachers are required to integrate technology into the classroom to engage learners who are regarded as digital natives. Digital storytelling can be an alternative medium for vocabulary learning. This case study examined how young learners perceived the implementation of digital storytelling during vocabulary learning. In-depth interviews and closed-ended questionnaires were employed to investigate the use of digital storytelling in the classroom. The sample of the study recruited 23 fifth-grade learners from an elementary school in Tuban, East Java. The qualitative data from the interviews and questionnaires of the young learners revealed that they considered digital storytelling more engaging, fascinating, and motivating for improving their vocabulary development. As a result, EFL teachers are recommended to deliver appropriate digital storytelling to young learners in order to teach vocabulary and support their vocabulary development.
