Abstract

This study aims to develop learning devices, especially in the evaluation section of science learning in junior high school, which in turn after being implemented in the classroom is expected to develop 21st century skills of students. In particular, this study aims to, 1) identify science learning evaluation tools made by teachers so that they obtain a clear picture of the profile of the evaluation tool, 2) develop a junior high school science learning evaluation tool that supports 21st century skills. This research includes development research in four stages, namely: decide, design, develop, and evaluate. The results of this study indicate that the tools developed by the teacher are in complete category, the learning objectives are clear, although the stages in part still need to be improved. Learning evaluation instruments developed by the teacher have met the principles of assessment, the presentation is in accordance with the curriculum, the sentence in the question is quite communicative, uses good and correct language and does not cause multiple interpretations. However, the majority of questions made by teachers still measure low-level thinking skills. This is because teachers have not been trained in developing questions that measure high-level thinking skills. An evaluation tool that was then developed together with the teacher was intended to perfect the shortcomings of the previous evaluation toolKeywords: 21st Century Skills, Learning Evaluation Tools, Middle School Science

Abstract

Corrosion inhibitors of 2-isopropyl-5-methylphenol and its derivatives has been elucidated by means of density functional theory at B3LYP/6-31G(d) level of theory. Effect of electron donating and withdrawing groups such as NH2, SH, CHCH2, CH3, OH, CHO, COOH, F and NO2 on the corrosion inhibitor of 2-isopropyl-5-methylphenol derivatives also have been studied. The quantum chemical parameters such as the frontier orbital energies (EHOMO), ionization potential (I), electron affinity (A) and electronegativity (χ) are closely related to the corrosion inhibition efficiency (IE %) of 2-isopropyl-5-methylphenol derivatives. The presence of electron donating groups increase IE % values meanwhile electron with drawing groups reduce IE % values. The enhancement of IE % follows NO2 < CHO < COOH < SH < F < CH3 < CHCH2 < OH < NH2. Electron donating NH2 group gives 96.38 % of IE %, pure 2-isopropyl-5-methylphenol IE % = 82.70 %. In contrast, electron withdrawing NO2 group gives IE % only 68.66 %. This theoretical study would have a significantly contribution for accelerating corrosion inhibitor experimental to gain optimum results.

Abstract

The roles of counterions, solvent types and extraction temperatures on the selectivity of 18-crown-6 (L) toward alkaline earth salts MX2 (M = Ca, Sr, Ba; X = Cl-, NO3-) have been studied by density functional method at B3LYP level of theory in gas and solvent phase. In gas phase, the chloride anion Cl- is the preference counterion than nitrate anion NO3-. This result is confirmed by the interaction energies, the second order interaction energies, charge transfers, energy difference between HOMO-LUMO and electrostatic potential maps. The presence of solvent reversed the gas phase trend. It is found that NO3- is the preference counterion in solvent phase. The calculated free energies demonstrate that the solvent types strongly change the strength of the complex formation. The free energies are exothermic in polar solvent while for the non polar solvent the free energies are endothermic. As the temperature changes the free energies also vary where the higher the temperatures the lower the free energy values. The calculated free energies are correlated well with the experimental stability constants. This theoretical study would have a strong contribution in planning the experimental conditions in terms of the preference counterions, solvent types and optimum extraction temperatures.

Abstract

The structures, energetic and thermodynamic parameters of crown ethers with different cavity size, electron donating/withdrawing substituent groups and donor atoms have been determined with density functional method at B3LYP level of theory in gas and solvent phase. Small core quasi-relativistic effective core potentials was used together with the accompanying SDD basis set for Sr2+ and DZP basis set was used for crown ether atoms. Natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis was evaluated to characterize the distribution of electrons on the complexes. The interaction energy is well correlated with the values of Strontium charge after complexation, the second order interaction energies (E2) and HOMO-LUMO energy gab (∆Egab). The interaction energy and thermodynamics parameters in gas phase are reduced in solvent phase as the solvent molecules weaken the metal-crown ether interaction. The thermodynamic parameters indicated that less feasibility to extract Sr2+ ion directly from pure water without presence of organic solvent. The theoretical values of extraction energy for Sr(NO3)2 salt from aqueous solution in different organic solvent is validated by the experimental trend. This study would have strong contribution in planning the experiments to the design of specific host ligand and screening of solvent for extraction of metal ion.

Abstract

The effect of macrocycle ring size on the corrosion inhibition efficiency of dibenzo-12-crown-4 (DB12C4), dibenzo-15-crown-5 (DB15C5), dibenzo-18-crown-6 (DB18C6), dibenzo-21-crown-7 (DB21C7) and dibenzo-24-crown-8 (DB24C8) have been elucidated by mean of density functional calculation at B3LYP/6-31G(d) level of theory in the gas and aqueous environment. The quantum chemical parameters including the frontier orbital energies (EHOMO, ELUMO), ionization potential (I), electron affinity (A), the absolute electronegativity (χ), hardness (η), softness (σ), and the fraction of electron transferred (ΔN) are positively correlated to the corrosion inhibition efficiency (IE%) of the studied crown ethers. The calculation results indicate that DB24C8 exhibits the highest corrosion inhibition efficiency, whereas DB12C4 exhibits the lowest corrosion inhibition efficiency. The results of this study will contribute to design crown ethers potential as corrosion inhibitors.

Abstract

The corrosion inhibition performance of 4-hydrocoumarin derivatives has been studied using weight loss, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical frequency modulation techniques. However, experimental studies have not explained why the methoxy (OCH3) group contributes more to the increase in corrosion inhibition than the methyl (CH3) and chlorine (Cl) functional groups. In this theoretical study, the electronic aspect of the target corrosion inhibitors will be studied in detail to help strengthen the explanation in the experimental research. Density functional theory, ab initio, and Monte Carlo simulations have been used to analyze the corrosion inhibition performance of 4 curcumin derivatives against copper. The quantum chemistry approach is carried out under gas and aqueous conditions in neutral and protonated inhibitors. The Monte Carlo simulation was used to observe the dynamics and the mechanism of inhibition of the target molecule on the copper surface. The quantum chemistry approach can mimic the geometrical parameters of molecular inhibitors. It can also explain electronically why the OCH3 functional group is superior to other substituents. The adsorption energy of the 4-hydroquinone derivative is linearly correlated with the reported experimental study. The level of corrosion inhibition efficiency is OCH3 > CH3 > H > Cl.
