Abstract

Eighteen Indonesian new plant type (NPT) of rice varieties and lines were evaluated in a ratoon system. The results showed that ratooning ability was related to the vegetative growth prior to harvest, which gave high ability ratoon growth. New plant type varieties and several lines of rice had better vegetative growth and produced higher ratoon than other genotypes. Ratoons started to develop 2-7 days after harvest, with an average number of leaf 2-4 per tiller. Number of productive tillers of ratoon ranged from 6.0 to 30.0 per hill, with number of grain per panicle ranged from 38.0 to 228.2, and grain weight per hill of ratoon 10.4 to 31.2 g, dependent on genotypes. Maturity of ratoon was also dependent on genotypes. On average, maturity was 68 days after harvest of the main crop. Grouping of ratooning ability based on hierarchical cluster analysis resulted in three groups, namely nine genotypes had high potential, fi ve genotypes had medium potential, and four genotypes had low potential. This study indicated that ratoon is potential to increase rice planting index in Indonesia. The genotypes with high ratoon ability need to be evaluated for agronomic performance in the fi eld. Abstract

Aromatic new plant type (NPT) rice lines were selected to obtain high yielding and aromatic lines. The objectives of the research were to study the yield stability and adaptability of 35 NPTrice lines across different environment, with Ciherang and Sintanur as check varieties. The lines planted at two locations, Bogor and Pusakanagara in two seasons (2009 dry and wet seasons, DS-WS). The experiment used randomized complete block design (RCBD), with three replications. The 21-day-old seedlings were planted with spacing of 20 cm x 20 cm, with a plot size of 2 m x 5 m. Yield stability and adaptability were estimated by using coeffi cient regression (bi) and general mean of yield by Finlay-Wilkinson method. Combined analysis of variance showed that lines (G), environment (E), and the G x E interaction were signifi cantly different. Lines showed different stability and adaptability . Several lines yielded higher than Ciherang variety . Nine lines were classifi edasstable and widely adapted at the marginal environment, i.e IPB 116-F-3-1, IPB 117-F-4-1, IPB-117-F-14-2, IPB-117-F-15-2, IPB-117-F-17-5, IPB 140-F-1-1, 140-F-IPB, 2-1, IPB 140-F-3, and IPB 149-F-2. Lines IPB 113-F-2, IPB 140-F-4, IPB 140-F-6, IPB 140-F-7, and B11738-MR-Si-1-2-1-2 were not stable and adapted only in optimum environmental condition (bi > 1) while IPB 116-F-46-1, IPB-117-F 17-4, IPB-117-F 18-3 and B11955-MR-84-1-4 has the value of bi < 1 or adaptable to marginal environments.Keywords: aromatic rice, NPT rice, yield stability

Abstract

Improvement of rice panicle architecture is one important objective in the development of improved new-plant-type rice varieties. Panicle architecture is directly related to yield components in rice. The aims of this study were to obtain information on inheritance pattern of panicle architecture on F2 generation and to obtain the best selected individuals. The experiment was conducted at Sawah Baru Experimental Farm Bogor, from May to October 2016. Two F2 populations derived from crosses of IPB 3S/IPB160-F-36, IPB160-F-36/IPB 5R and three genotypes of parents were used as experimental materials. A total of 208 and 204 plant samples were taken representing each of the two F2 populations and 20 plants representing the parents. Three panicles were taken randomly from each individual as observed samples. The results showed that additive gene action influenced number of primary branches in population of IPB 3S/IPB160-F-36, whereas in the population of IPB160-F-36/IPB 5R, most of the panicle architecture traits were controlled by additive gene action except for the length of primary branches. All of panicle architecture traits were controlled by relatively many genes except length of primary branches and number of grains on primary branches in the IPB 3S/IPB160-F-36 population. The panicle architecture of the two observed population was genetically varies. The heritability estimates were moderate to high. Selection could increase the mean of panicle architecture traits using either single or multiple traits simultaneously.Keywords: gene action, heritability, genetic variability, panicle traits

Abstract

The effects of nitrogen fertilizer on agronomic and morphological characters depend on several factors such as genotypes and nitrogen rate. The study was aimed to evaluate nitrogen effects on rice panicle. A field experiment was conducted at Babakan Research Station during November 2015- February 2016 using a split-split plot design with three replicates. Nitrogen doses was a main plot, genotypes was a subplot, and time of application was a sub-subplot. A greenhouse experiment was carried out at PAIR, Jakarta during February-July 2017 using a completely randomized design with three replicates. The results from the field experiment indicated that the highest panicle number (13.25), number of filled grains (177.94) and spikelet number (213.76) were obtained at doses of 450 kg urea ha-1. Analysis of variance showed that the genotypic effects were significant for all traits observed, while the interaction effect between genotypes and time of nitrogen application was significant on the length of first grain from first node. However, the three-factors interactions were not significant for all traits. The greenhouse experiment revealed that both genotypes and N rates significantly affected all traits except for panicle number and the length of first grain from first node, respectively, while their interaction only significant for number of primary branch. Nitrogen increased all traits observed except the length of first grain from first node. Simultaneously, both experiments showed significant effects of genotypes for all traits observed. Doses of urea fertilizers above 400 kg ha-1 could improve the performance of panicle traits in order to increase yield potential.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe  objective  of  the  research  was  to  study  the  factors  effecting  unfilled  grains  in  intersubspecific  hybridization.  The  research  was  conducted  at  Muara, Bogor  from  April  2005  to  February  2006.  The  materials  used  in the research were  ten  F1 hybrid  combinations.  The evaluation was done by crossing the hybrids to Ciherang and it was resiprocal. A randomized block design with three replications were arranged in greenhouse. The results showed that five cross combinations produced higher unfilled grains and lower pollen fertility due to defective male gamets. The cross combinations that is Akitakomaci/IR64, Akitakomaci/Wayrarem, Akitakomaci/Salumpikit, Akitakomaci/Ketupat, and Akitakomaci/Kewal. Another five cross combinations produced normal pollen fertility but high unfilled grains. The high unfilled grains of four cross combinations was due to defective female gamets. The cross combination that is IR64/Sirendah Pulen, IR64/Lampung Putih, IR64/Lampung Kuning, and IR64/Mesir.  The other cross combination was due to defective male and female gamets  namely IR64/Brentel. Key words:  Unfilled grain, F1 hybrids, male gamets, female gamets

Abstract

One of the definite successful of rice breeding programs for increasing yield and tolerance to environmental stress condition is selection method. Selection method will be effectively if it is supported by a perfect knowledge of genetics character inheritance. The objectives of this study is to investigate the information of inheritance pattern adapted of rice towards low temperature stress condition. The experiment was conducted in both Sesean rural area, Toraja regency, South Sulawesi on 1500 m above sea levels, an mean temperature 15 o C, type of soil is Podzolic and at Bogor Agriculture Institute. This experiment is done in January 2006 until July 2007. The result showed that tolerance parental grew well and higher yield than sensitive parental. There were no significant differences between F1 and F1 reciprocal for all characters. Tolerance parental is more superior than sensitive parental in all characters have been tested. Mean of F1 generation is in between tolerance parental and sensitive parental. BCP1 has spheres wider than parentals and F1 generation, but BCP2 smaller than parentals and F1 generation. F2 generation is spheres wider than the average of both parentals. The m [d] [h] genetic model is the most suitable for all characters. Except, date of flowering and weight of filled rice where appropriate models is m [d] [h] [l]. Broad sense and narrow sense heritability is range between low to high. Based on the degree of dominant, additive effect is higher than dominant effect. The negative F value reached on date of flowering and fur lenght; and others characters, F value is positive.

Abstract

Yield grain of rice was determined by genetical and environmental factors, one of them was genetic response on levelof phosphorus. Rice panicle branching was one of the key factors on supporting rice yield. The study aimed to find out ricepanicle branching responses to phosphorus. Controlled experiment was conducted on September 2017 - February 2018, usingtwo genotypes planted on poor soil media and six levels of phosphorus as treatments, arranged in completely randomizeddesign. Panicle branching characters were observed on the experiment. The experiment showed the genotype’s effects atall panicle branching except number of tertiary branches and number of grains on tertiary branches. Phosphorus affectedpanicle branching except panicle length, primary branch length, and number of grain on tertiary branches. Genotype andphosphorus interaction appeared at all panicle branching except number of primary branch, number of tertiary branches,number of grains on tertiary branches, and the percentage of grains number on tertiary branches. The panicle of genotypeIPB180-12 was likely more stabil to the various levels of phosphorus, meanwhile the panicle of genotype IPB158-5 moresensitive. According to the polynomial regression evaluation, the optimum level of P2O5 for the sensitive genotype was 421.92kg ha-1, and for the tolerant genotype was 108 kg ha-1 in poor soil.

Abstract

Breeding rice for heavy panicle is prospective to improve production. However, the information on genotype x environment interaction (GxE) of rice panicle morphology is limited. This study was aimed to evaluate the GxE interaction on panicle morphology of heavy panicle rice (Oryza sativa L.) genotypes. The experiments were conducted in four environmental conditions. The research was conducted from December 2017 to May 2019 at the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture, IPB University, using 24 genotypes (F5-F6 generation) with 6 check varieties. The experimental design was an augmented design (3 replicates of check). Analysis of variance showed that GxE interaction effects were significant on the panicle length, number of axis nodes, primary branches number, secondary branches number, tertiary branches number, number of grains per panicle, and grain density per primary branch. The results showed that the two environments in the rainy season produced higher primary branches number, secondary branches number, tertiary branches number, number of grain per panicle, and grain density per primary branch than the two environments in the dry season. Correlation and path analyses showed that panicle length, number of secondary branches, and grain density per primary branch had a significant and direct positive effect on the number of grains per panicle. Abstract

Hybrid rice is derived from a cross between the cytoplasmic male sterile (CMS) as the female parent and the restorer line as the male parent. This study aimed to evaluate the ability of several new plant type (NPT) rice lines as restorers of the CMS female parent and to elucidate the performance of the hybrid combinations. The research was carried out from December 2019 to November 2020 at Babakan Sawah Baru Experimental Station, Department of Agronomy and Horticulture, IPB University, Bogor, Indonesia. The hybrids were evaluated in the field together with the CMS female parent, male parents, and two check varieties, namely Ciherang and hybrid P05 Prima Seed. The experimental design used was a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with two replications. The results showed that two male parental lines, IPB189-F-10-3-2 (T6) and IPB189-14-1-1 (T9), had a hybrid seed yield per hill of 66.04 g and 75.27 g, respectively. These two parents have the restorer gene (R) which is substantiated by the good characteristics of the number of filled grains and total grain per panicle of the two hybrids. The potential hybrids CMS x IPB189-F-10-3-2 and CMS x IPB189-14-1-1 had a positive heterosis for panicle length and 1,000 grain weight, and could be evaluated in future research. Abstract

Transcription factors have an important function in regulating gene expression and plant responses to stresses. The ERF, bZIP, WRKY, MYB, and NAC are stress inducible transcription factors. The OsNAC6 is a member of the NAC transcription factor family in rice and its expression is induced by abiotic stresses, wounding and blast disease. Characterization of OsNAC6 gene sequences would give a better understanding on how OsNAC gene functions biologically. The objectives of this research are to isolate the OsNAC6 cDNA from Nipponbare, Batutegi, and Rojolele cultivars, to characterize their DNA sequences, and to compare their sequences to other NAC genes from other plants available in GenBank DNA databases. Isolated cDNA and sequencing of the fragments resulted in a 912 bp DNA sequences. Translation of the sequences yielded a protein consisted of 303 amino acid residue. Blast analysis of amino acid sequences indicated identity of isolated cDNA from three Indonesian rice cultivars are the OsNAC6 gene. Deduced amino acid residues from amplified cDNAs of Nipponbare, Batutegi, and Rojolele cultivars shared 100% sequence identities to rice OsNAC6 (Acc. # BAA89800), 71-100% sequence identity to a number of OsNAC protein from Oryza sativa and 63-83% sequence identity to NAC protein from other plants.
