Abstract

The rapid development of machine translation tools has revolutionized the way language barriers are overcome. However, the accuracy of these tools, particularly when translating complex sentence structures, remains a subject of interest. This study, compares the translation accuracy of two widely used tools, Google Translate and Microsoft Translator, focusing specifically on English complex sentences. The analysis evaluates their performance based on linguistic accuracy, syntactic structure preservation, and semantic clarity. Findings from this study, aim to provide insights into the strengths and limitations of these tools particularly on the translation accuracy for academic and professional translation purposes.

Abstract

This study employs a descriptive qualitative method to compare the accuracy of translating two narrative texts from English into Indonesian using Google Translate and ChatGPT. The narrative texts were sourced from Detik.com and translated using both tools. The goal of this study is to evaluate grammatical precision, contextual consistency, and fluency in the translations. The findings reveal that ChatGPT excels in maintaining context and coherence, delivering more accurate and natural translations compared to Google Translate. Google Translate tends to be less accurate, particularly when handling more complex contexts. These findings suggest that ChatGPT can provide more reliable and relevant translations, particularly for communication and language learning purposes.

Abstract

In today’s globalized world, English has become an essential tool in various academic and professional fields, including economics. This study explores the perceptions of economics students at the University of HKBP Nommensen Pematangsiantar (UHKBPNP) regarding the role and importance of English in their education and future careers. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the study focuses on students’ experiences, challenges, and attitudes toward English language learning within the context of their economics studies. A total of 44 students of Economics Education Department participated in this case study, with data collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results indicate that the majority of students recognize the critical role of English in understanding economic concepts, accessing academic resources, and participating in discussions. Students also acknowledge the significance of English proficiency for career development, particularly for job opportunities in multinational companies and international organizations. However, many students face challenges in mastering technical economic vocabulary, reading English textbooks, writing academic reports, and comprehending English lectures. The findings highlight a strong demand for more specialized English courses, such as Business English or English for Specific Purposes (ESP), to better prepare students for the linguistic demands of the global economic sector. In conclusion, the study emphasizes the need for enhanced English language instruction tailored to the specific needs of Economics Education Department students at UHKBPNP. Incorporating practical and specialized English courses into the curriculum will enable students to achieve academic success and excel in their future careers in a globalized marketplace.

Abstract

Penelitian ini mengkaji perbandingan kinerja dua alat penerjemah mesin, DeepL dan Google Translate, dalam menerjemahkan teks bahasa Inggris. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengevaluasi akurasi, pemahaman kontekstual, dan pengalaman pengguna dari kedua aplikasi berdasarkan tinjauan pustaka. Metode yang digunakan adalah pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif dengan penelitian pustaka, mengumpulkan data dari berbagai sumber akademik. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Google Translate unggul dalam kecepatan penerjemahan dan mendukung lebih banyak bahasa, sementara DeepL menunjukkan pemahaman kontekstual yang lebih baik dan menghasilkan terjemahan yang lebih alami. DeepL mencapai skor akurasi rata-rata 2,8, sedikit lebih tinggi dibandingkan dengan skor Google Translate yang 2,6, yang menonjolkan kekuatannya dalam menangkap nuansa linguistik, terutama dalam teks-teks yang kompleks. Namun, Google Translate tetap menjadi pilihan yang praktis karena aksesibilitasnya, fitur terjemahan waktu nyata, dan integrasinya dengan layanan Google lainnya. Salah satu keterbatasan Google Translate adalah kesulitan dalam memahami ekspresi idiomatik, sementara DeepL terbatas pada jumlah bahasa yang didukung. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa pemilihan alat penerjemah harus didasarkan pada kebutuhan pengguna apakah lebih mengutamakan kecepatan dan ketersediaan bahasa atau akurasi dan pemahaman kontekstual.

Abstract

A key difficulty for individuals learning English as an Additional Language (EAL) remains pronunciation, particularly in recognizing the differences between American English (AmE) and British English (BrE) norms. This research explores strategies to assist learners in accurately articulating and understanding the distinctive phonetic traits of both forms of English. The research highlights the significance of diverse techniques such as organized shadowing, phonetic notation, sound differentiation exercises, and engaging pronunciation applications.Carried out over a period of two months involving 30 students with intermediate skills, the research indicated that using real native resources, participating in peer correction exercises, and maintaining regular pronunciation records greatly aided in enhancing the learners' skills. Additionally, the learners showed an increased understanding of accent differences and built their confidence in switching between British English and American English based on the context of communication. This study adds value to the increasing demand for flexible pronunciation teaching that recognizes the worldwide variety of English and fosters learner independence.

Abstract

English is a language used all around the world, and it has many different ways of being spoken depending on where people are from. The two main ways are British English and American English. These two versions are especially important in schools, media, and international communication. This paper examines the pronunciation differences between British and American English, and how these differences may impact students’ language learning. Rather than conducting experiments, this paper draws upon theories and descriptions from established studies in phonetics and linguistics. The paper focuses on differences in vowels and consonants, how words are stressed, how sentences go up and down in pitch, and processes like rhoticity and flapping. It also gives examples of how these differences show up in classrooms, especially for Indonesian learners who are often exposed to both versions through books, online content, and language learning tools. In the end, the paper suggests that learning pronunciation should focus on making speech clear and understandable, rather than sticking strictly to one way of speaking.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of English songs as a phonology-based tool for teaching pronunciation to EFL learners. The research employed an experimental approach involving intermediate-level students in real classroom settings. Songs were integrated into pronunciation lessons to observe their impact on learners' phonological development, including segmental features (vowels and consonants) and suprasegmental features (intonation, stress, and rhythm). The results showed that students who were taught using English pop songs demonstrated notable improvements in their pronunciation accuracy, listening comprehension, and motivation to learn. The melodic and repetitive nature of songs helped reinforce sound patterns, making pronunciation practice more enjoyable and memorable. These findings support the use of music as an innovative pedagogical strategy in English language classrooms, promoting not only phonological competence but also a more engaging and confidence-building learning environment.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the influence of phonological awareness on the pronunciation accuracy of non-native English learners, with a specific focus on both segmental and suprasegmental features. Employing a library reasearch design. The investigation explored common pronunciation challenges related to vowel sounds particularly pure vowels and diphthongs as well as word stress and rhythm patterns. The findings indicate that students frequently struggle with distinguishing vowel length, producing diphthong glides, and placing stress on the correct syllables. These pronunciation difficulties are largely influenced by the phonological system of their first language, Bahasa Indonesia, which does not contain equivalent phonemic contrasts or prosodic features. As a result, these challenges negatively affect the intelligibility and fluency of their spoken English. The study supports the theory of interlanguage phonology, highlighting how learners construct an intermediate sound system based on both L1 and L2 influences.

Abstract

This study investigates how phonological awareness and high-frequency vocabulary practice can support English language learning among university students. Recognizing that pronunciation and spelling variations between American English (AmE) and British English (BrE) often pose challenges for learners, this research integrates phonological training with exposure to 100 high-frequency words. Over five days, 30 English department students participated in structured learning sessions involving pronunciation drills using International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) transcriptions, comparative analysis of spelling differences, and interactive discussions on phonological patterns. Pre- and post-tests were administered to measure improvements in pronunciation accuracy and spelling recognition. The findings reveal substantial gains in students’ pronunciation accuracy, increased awareness of English spelling variations, and enhanced confidence in oral and written communication. These results underscore the value of incorporating phonology-focused approaches in vocabulary learning, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge of language systems and practical communicative competence.

Abstract

This research aims to explore tenth-grade students’ perceptions of using ChatGPT in supporting English writing skills at SMA Negeri 3 Pematangsiantar. The research applied a descriptive qualitative method based on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), focusing on two constructs: Perceived Usefulness (PU) and Perceived Ease of Use (PEOU). The qualitative approach was chosen to deeply understand students’ experiences, meanings, and subjective views regarding ChatGPT in writing, as qualitative research allows for exploration beyond mere numerical data (Miles & Huberman, 1994, cited in Sugiyono, 2017). The sample consisted of 35 students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through a questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings reveal that students’ perceptions were generally positive, with a stronger inclination toward ease of use. For PEOU, there were 322 agree responses in total (from 12 items), indicating that students perceived ChatGPT as simple to operate, accessible, and effective in writing. For PU, there were 314 agree responses, showing that students recognized ChatGPT’s usefulness in enriching vocabulary, improving grammar, and assisting idea generation. While a few students expressed concerns about overreliance, most perceived ChatGPT as a user-friendly and supportive tool for writing. The research suggests that integrating AI-based applications like ChatGPT, guided by TAM theory, can enhance students’ confidence and engagement in English writing instruction.
