Abstract

This study aimed to examine the impact of the Flipped Classroom teaching model on the reading comprehension of seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Siantar. The Flipped Classroom is an innovative teaching approach where students engage with learning materials, such as videos, outside of class, allowing class time to be used for interactive activities, discussions, and deeper learning. The research focused on students' comprehension of narrative texts, comparing the performance of an experimental group (using the Flipped Classroom model) to a control group. The findings indicated a significant improvement in the reading comprehension skills of students in the experimental group. The pre-test mean score for the experimental group was 60.8, which increased to 87.8 after the intervention. This suggests that the Flipped Classroom model can positively impact students' ability to understand and analyze narrative texts. While the model offers flexibility, allowing students to learn at their own pace and revisit the material as needed, challenges such as the need for access to mobile devices and internet connectivity may hinder its effectiveness for some students. Despite these limitations, the Flipped Classroom contributed to increased student engagement, improved communication, and a more interactive learning environment. This study highlights the potential benefits of the Flipped Classroom model in enhancing students' reading comprehension and suggests further exploration of its implementation in different educational contexts.

The results indicate that the majority of students recognize the critical role of English in understanding economic concepts, accessing academic resources, and participating in discussions. Students also acknowledge the significance of English proficiency for career development, particularly for job opportunities in multinational companies and international organizations. However, many students face challenges in mastering technical economic vocabulary, reading English textbooks, writing academic reports, and comprehending English lectures. The findings highlight a strong demand for more specialized English courses, such as Business English or English for Specific Purposes (ESP), to better prepare students for the linguistic demands of the global economic sector. In conclusion, the study emphasizes the need for enhanced English language instruction tailored to the specific needs of Economics Education Department students at UHKBPNP. Incorporating practical and specialized English courses into the curriculum will enable students to achieve academic success and excel in their future careers in a globalized marketplace.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the difficulties experienced by Grade XI students at SMA Negeri 3 Pematangsiantar in translating recount texts from Indonesian into English. Using a descriptive qualitative method, the research focuses on one class consisting of 36 students during the 2024–2025 academic year. The students were asked to translate a recount text titled “Perjalanan ke Candi Borobudur” (A Trip to Borobudur Temple), which contains linguistic and cultural elements that pose challenges in translation. Data were collected through students’ written translations, classroom observations, and interviews. The analysis revealed four main categories of difficulties: grammatical errors, particularly in the use of the simple past tense; lexical errors due to literal translation; structural errors influenced by Indonesian syntax; and problems translating culture-specific expressions. These findings suggest that students often rely on direct translation strategies, leading to inaccurate and unnatural English output. The study highlights the importance of integrating grammar instruction, vocabulary development, and cultural awareness in translation teaching. Additionally, employing a genre-based approach can help students better understand the features and conventions of recount texts, thereby improving their translation accuracy. The results imply that targeted instructional strategies and consistent practice are essential for enhancing students’ translation competence and overall English proficiency. This study contributes to understanding the linguistic and cultural challenges in EFL translation contexts and offers practical recommendations for language educators.

Abstract

This research examines English language learning patterns and EFL students' pronunciation preferences for British and American accents. This research analyzes students' phonological preferences through formal and informal learning activities with the ultimate goal of improving English teaching methods. Data were collected through questionnaires and audio recordings. Closed-ended and The participants of this research consisted of 10 high school students from various schools in Pematangsiantar, North Sumatra, were selected through purposive sampling. open-ended questions were asked about students' English learning backgrounds, use of English-language media, and their opinions on accents. Audio recordings of students reading the narrative text "A Surprising Morning" were used to collect pronunciation data. The text included 15 of the most common words in British and American accents. In the phonological research of 150 pronunciations (10 students × 15 words), 80 (53.3%) preferred the American accent, while 70 (46.6%) preferred the British accent. Students were more likely to pronounce with an American accent, although the difference was not significant. According to the questionnaire, more students watched American English films, songs, and social media than British media. This research shows that media-influenced learning patterns increase students' phonological preference for the American accent. To improve students' phonological awareness, teachers should clearly explain accent differences in class and use diverse learning resources.
