Abstract

Recently, studies examining the inclusion of Islamic character education in schooling sectors have been exclusively discerned. The research mainly focused on teachers’ and students’ perceptions, curriculum and materials development, as well as policy implementation. Albeit the results of these studies shared significant insights in teacher education programs, very sparse discussions were carried out with regard to how the Islamic character education should be enacted. Interestingly, virtual education nowadays also challenges the implementation of this notion. In this work, therefore, we propose a model of Islamic character education cultivation employing e-learning approach in a schooling context. The use of participatory action research (PAR), additionally, is encouraged to capture learning cycles of Islamic character in the classroom between teachers and students. This proposal, if implemented by teachers, would contribute to better realization of moderate teachings of Islam through character education.

Abstract

This paper figures out the characters and the messages or moral values of a play namely Lady Widermere’s Fan. The drama was designed based on Heathcote’s (1984) understanding of drama in education in order to cultivate creative pedagogy and ‘character’ building. The data was gained by reading the drama script based on existing documents. The result showed that every character has various characters and each of them is related to others. The main character has fundamentally strengthened the plot and has important effects to other characters. The moral values that can be seen from this play are that all humankind is far from the word “perfect” even if they are consider themselves as good, kind, and wise people. They still tend to have shortage.

Abstract

This research project intends to engage with the perspectives of ’shadow teachers’ who perform private tutoring sessions in Indonesia, focusing on a gap in the literature concerning the construction and execution of English learning programs within informal education settings. Existing studies have explored individualized instruction within formal classroom contexts. However, scant attention has been directed towards the role of shadow teachers with regard to curriculum development beyond the conventional school system. This study hopes to address some of these gaps by drawing upon the practical wisdom of these educators to reveal the complexities, collaborations, and tailored English Language learning program designing as well as the bespoke decision-making processes which occur within non-standardized educational settings.

Abstract

This systematic review investigates the influence of reading habits on the writing skills of Indonesian EFL (English as a Foreign Language) students, based on 24 selected articles from a pool of 30 Scopes-indexed studies from 2014-2024. The findings reveal a clear connection between regular reading habits and enhanced writing proficiency, particularly in grammar, creative thinking, and content organization. However, challenges such as limited exposure to English, inadequate meta-cognitive strategies, and a lack of reading culture hinder progress. Technological integration can mitigate these barriers and foster reading and writing development if effectively implemented. The study highlights strategies to promote reading habits, including using multimedia tools, encouraging independent learning, developing meta-cognitive strategies, and fostering international collaboration in academic research. By addressing these areas, educational practices in Indonesia can more effectively support EFL learners in improving their English writing skills through enhanced reading engagement.

Abstract

This study aims to understand the English learning process using Arloopa as a digital medium. This study uses a descriptive qualitative design. To answer the problem of the study, the researcher observed the learning and teaching process in an Islamic secondary school in Malang. Two classes were observed by immersion in the classroom to get data. To verify the data obtained, the researcher checked the learning module document. The researcher revealed that using Arloopa as a digital learning media requires additional skill technology for the teacher if the students need to be equipped with a mobile phone, which Arloopa is only working with a mobile phone. The teacher should connect the mobile phone’s display to the LCD projector so that the students can view an object displayed by Arloopa. It would be different if each student in the class utilized an Android phone.

Abstract

Writing skills are crucial in education, yet many students face challenges with engagement and interest. Given the increasing use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in education, exploring innovative approaches to address these issues is important. This study investigated ICT-based interactive video to enhance students' engagement and descriptive writing skills. Conducted with 33 seventh-grade students from a junior high school in Malang, this qualitative study employed classroom observations and analysis of written texts. Data analysis involved categorizing observation records by themes such as student engagement and interaction with the video. Students’ descriptive texts were examined for advancements in clarity, coherence, and creativity and categorized based on these aspects. The findings indicated that after using interactive videos, students’ descriptive writing displayed advancements in the three areas examined, with many students achieving high-quality levels. These results suggest that interactive videos can be a valuable tool for boosting students’ engagement and writing skills. The study highlights the need for incorporating such media into writing instruction. It suggests that further research should explore the refinement of these tools and their application in varied educational settings.
