Abstract

This study investigated the teaching of EFL reading at a university level from teacher’s and students’ perspectives. It delved into how the participating lecturer conducted the teaching of reading. Moreover, it shared the difficulties of teaching reading and the difficulties of students in reading. In this research, the researchers used a case study. The researchers used observation and interviews to collect the data. The participants of this study are one lecturer and three students situated in a private Islamic university in Malang, Indonesia. The recruited lecturer has been teaching reading for more than 10 years. Meanwhile, the recruited students were selected because they were close to the researchers and easy to access. The findings suggest that the teaching of reading was done by making a group discussion and cooperative learning such as Think-Pair-Share and Jigsaw. Besides, the minimal access to high-quality books for students’ reading tasks is one of the difficulties in the teaching of reading. Students also found it difficult to read difficult words. Mostly, they skipped the words and struggled to look for the text's main ideas and topic sentences. Finally, based on the result of the study, it is suggested that English lecturers should use appropriate reading books and techniques, select other supplementary materials, and vary the teaching activities. Future researchers are urged to conduct more intensive research in the teaching of reading in different contexts.

Abstract

Everyone has an identity and language is a sign of that. The associations in a person's environment, with whom they hang out, and where they learn can all have an impact on their identities. Students have their challenges in learning a foreign language, therefore it can be seen whether the everyday language they use has an influence when they learn a foreign language.

Abstract

This research aims to explore the level of student engagement in English language learning (ELL) in an Islamic boarding school, utilizing a phenomenological research methodology. The study's primary objectives are: firstly, to understand how students subjectively interpret and experience their engagement in ELL activities within the boarding school setting; secondly to analyze the contextual factors present in the Islamic school environment that students believe impact their engagement; and finally, to examine how students perceive the harmony or potential discord between the teaching and learning of English and their religious and cultural beliefs. The results of the study have been divided into three main themes: students' perspectives on engagement in the ELL, contextual factors in the educational environment, and perceptions of harmony/discord between ELL and religious beliefs. These findings highlight the complex linguistic dynamics that exist within pesantren settings, emphasizing the need for tailored pedagogical strategies to be formulated and implemented. This discussion emphasizes the necessity for a thorough investigation that takes into account the perspectives of different stakeholders and the specific contexts of institutions to understand the intricacies of the language learning process in the distinct setting of pesantren. This research project has the potential to make a significant contribution towards the development of culturally sensitive and inclusive language learning environments.

Abstract

WhatsApp is a mobile phone application and web-based social network that integrates various features used to communicate with other users, including education, business, and entertainment. This study aimed to investigate EFL students' perspectives on WhatsApp as a medium for teaching and learning during the pandemic. The qualitative descriptive method was used in this study. A total of 30 students from the seventh grade in SMP 13 Jember were included in this study. The questionnaire was designed with both closed-ended and open-ended questions. The Guttman Scale is the format for a closed-ended questionnaire. The open-ended questions allowed participants to freely communicate and express their views and opinions, but there were no possibilities for using WhatsApp in English classrooms during the COVID-19 pandemic. During the COVID-19 epidemic, students' attitudes toward the WhatsApp application in English classes were tested using closed-ended and open-ended questionnaires. The information was gathered using a questionnaire and a phone interview. Following the completion of the research, we will learn how EFL students perceive WhatsApp as an online teaching-learning media during a pandemic. Furthermore, the results of this study that gauged participants' perception of the use of WhatsApp in learning vocabulary show that, generally, participants have positive attitudes towards learning new vocabulary items via WhatsApp. Implications for teaching and future research are discussed.
