Abstract

The objective of this study was to analyze the active compound of Garcinia mangostana (GME) and Andrographis paniculata (APE) extracts and the effectiveness of these extracts against aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) which had contaminated corn. The experimental design of this study was a completely randomized factorial design. Factor A was the addition of extract, A0=without addition, A1=addition of 0.08% GME, A2=addition of 0.16% GME, A3=addition of 0.08% APE, A4=addition of 0.16% APE. Factor B was the incubation period, B1=day 0, B2=day-2, B3=day-4. The research variables were extract yield, total phenolic content, antioxidant activity, corn moisture content and gross energy, AFB1 content, production and percentage of inhibition of AFB1. The data obtained were analyzed for variance and Duncan’s test. The results showed that GME and APE had yields of 16.68% and 5.49%, total phenolic content of 125.28 and 12.62 mg GAE g extract-1 and antioxidant activity of 29.82 and >200 ppm respectively. The addition of extract to each treatment during incubation significantly interacted with AFB1 production. However, the gross energy in each treatment was only affected by the incubation time, while the moisture content increased on the second day to 13.29%. It can be concluded that the addition of 0.16% GME could inhibit the production of AFB1 which was higher than the addition of other extracts during incubation. Key words: aflatoxin B1, Andrographis paniculata, corn, Garcinia mangostana

Abstract

Adulteration in rice bran happens quite high due to the expensive price of rice bran. Mixing the rice bran with husk could decrease the rice bran quality because the content of crude fiber and lignin cointained in husk are anti-nutrients. Lignin content can be estimated by the texture of rice bran mixed with husk image. This study aimed to analyze the texture of rice bran mixed with husk image using run length feature extraction method with k-nearest neighbour (KNN) classification. The images of rice bran mixed with husk were taken using Dino Capture digital microscope with magnification 200 times. The images were generated with the spatial resolution of 640×480 pixels in a bitmap format. Those images were converted from RGB into grayscale in preprocessing phase, then the result of grayscale images were enhanced using histogram equalization as image enhancement method. The training and testing was determined using 5-fold cross validation with 3 repetition. The result of KNN classification with 7 features showed the highest accuracy of 74.55%.

Abstract

The emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic on a global scale has caused major impacts on various sectors, including the education sector. In order to reduce the spread of Covid-19, many countries have implemented learning from home, distance learning or e-learning. Several online platforms that are widely used as learning media include Microsoft Teams, Google Classroom, and Canvas and Blackboard, which allow teachers to create learning development programs. These online platforms have various features including chat, video meetings and file storage that keep classes organized and easy to learn. Such change in the learning methods requires the adjustment of educational evaluation system or learning assessment towards the online tests or other forms of distance assessment. The main problem with online evaluation is that the exams are performed without the physical presence of both students and teachers As a consequence, verification of the examinees and the potential for cheating among the students have appeared as major obstacles during the online learning assessment. Another obstacle that arises in online exams is related to facilities such as hardware (laptops, androids, tablets, etc.), software as well as the stable internet connection for all students.

Abstract

Mineral absorption in ruminants have not been maximal. This would be seen from the various problems that occur in ruminants, one of which was caused by mineral deficiency, especially the mineral Selenium (Se). Therefore, it was necessary to have applied technology to increase the absorption of Se minerals, one of which was used by bionanomineral technology. The purpose of this study was to determine the production of bionanomineral Se from various types of Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) strains. The method used consisted of preparing tools and materials, breeding lactic acid bacteria, making Bionanomineral Se, and observed the production of Bionanomineral Se. The research treatment consisted of 2 stages, namely the first stage consisting of 4 treatments of different LAB strains: TSD 10, SPCE, DR162, and IA2, stage 2 each LAB strains were given treatment doses of 25 ppm and 50 ppm. The parameters observed included Stage 1: Bionanomineral production produced by intracellular and extracellular bacteria, stage 2: Optical Density (OD) and pH. The research design used a quantitative descriptive. The results showed that extracellular bionanomineral production was more than intracellular, the addition of 25 to 50 ppm Se showed that the OD of the four bacterial strains survived, and the pH results varied from each bacterial strain but were still within the normal range. The conclusion of this research was the production of bionanomineral Se as much as 25 ppm and 50 ppm in various types of different LAB strains, would be used as a potential source of organic Se minerals for ruminants.

Abstract

Objective: The objective of this study was to examine the accuracy of estimating the nutrient content in rice bran as a feed ingredient by using Near Infrared (NIR) technology compared to proximate analysis method. Methods: Rice bran was used as feed sample to compare the results of data analysis using these two methods. In this study the Fourier Transform Near-infrared used infrared with wavelength of 12500-4000 cm-1. The OPUS 7.8 software was integrated with NIRS. The model was made by using Partial Least Square regression analysis to correlate the result of the spectrum and the result of proximate analysis method. Results: In this study, the nutrient content in rice bran available in markets, which commonly are Crude Protein (CP), ether extract (EE), and Crude Fiber (CF), are quite varied and wide in range, so that The curve prediction/true showed up wider and did not cover the entire surface of the line. In consequence two outliers were removed so that the accuracy value could be increased in measuring the quality of animal feed as indicated by the improvement of the coefficient of determination or R2, Root Mean Square Error for Cross Validation (RMSECV), and Standard Error (SE).Conclusions. NIR is a useful tool to estimate nutrient composition of rice bran available in the market especially for CP, EE, and CF by removing two outliers. The Prediction / True curve does not widen after removing two outliers, and can improve R2, RMSECV, and SE values.

Abstract

This experiment aimed to evaluate chemical composition, in vitro rumen fermentation, digestibility, and methane emissions of forages including bede grass, gamal (Gliricidia sepium), Indigofera, lamtoro (Leucaena leucocephala), elephant grass, mini elephant grass and Thai elephant grass. Forage samples were dried at 60oC for 24 hours, then ground to 1 mm sieve. The ground samples were used subsequently to determine the chemical composition and in vitro rumen fermentation test. Incubation was carried out in a water bath at 39oC for 48 h without replication. The results showed that all forages contained various crude protein at a range of 9-20% DM. The proportion of neutral detergent insoluble CP (NDICP) and acid detergent insoluble CP (ADICP) in forage was generally low, but the highest was found in bede grass. The highest NH3 concentration was found in Indigofera incubation, and lowest was in bede grass. All forage samples, except for mini elephant grass and Indigofera, had IVDMD and IVOMD below 70%. We identified low methane emissions from forage at 48 hours of incubation. It was concluded that legumes had a higher crude protein than in grass species and had low methane emissions. However, the relatively low digestibility of legume may limit its utilization.

Rice bran quality can be tested physically or chemically. The physical method is faster but less accurate, on the other hand, the chemical method is more accurate but takes longer. A new method with accurate results and faster time is needed. One possible method is to estimate the nutrient content from the physical properties. The objective of this research is to study the correlation between the value of physical properties with the nutrient content of rice bran. The rice bran samples were taken from 10 rice mills in different locations. All samples were analysed for the value of bulk density (BD), tapped density (TD), crude protein (CP), and crude fiber (CF) content. The data obtained were analysed using analysis of variance. The correlation value between physical properties and nutrient content was evaluated using a linear regression model. The results showed that the BD (263.84 – 349.11 gL-1), TD (407.35 – 507.82 gL-1), CP (9.15-13.90 %), and CF (8.69-15.97 %) of rice bran were significant (P<0.05) varied among locations. The value of BD (r=0.9446) and TD (r=0.9699) was very closely (P<0.01) positively correlated to CP, on the other hand, BD (r=-0.9415) and TD (r=-0.9571) very closely negatively correlated (P<0.01) with CF. It can be concluded that the quality of rice bran varies among locations. The crude protein and crude fiber content of rice bran can be predicted from the bulk density and tapped density values.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effects of dietary nitrate addition on performance, methane emission, nutrient utilization, and the nitrate toxicity of ruminants by using the meta-analysis methodology from in vivo trials. A total of 38 published papers and 139 studies were used. Parameters observed were feed intake, animal performance, enteric methane emission, and nitrate toxicity. Data were subjected to the mixed model methodology. Nitrate doses or forms were treated as fixed factors, while the different studies were treated as random factors. Results revealed that nitrate supplementation significantly decreased the milk protein content, milk fat content, dry matter intake, gross energy intake, the molar proportion of the propionic acid, methane production, and the metabolism of vitamin A in a linear pattern (p<0.05). Moreover, nitrate addition significantly increased nitrate intake, the molar proportion of the acetic acid, the ratio of acetic acid to propionic acid, hydrogen molecule production, microbial protein synthesis, and nitrite blood levels (p<0.05). However, treatments did not affect the milk yield, final body weight, nitrate retention, and blood methemoglobin. There was a significant interaction among the animal types and the nitrate (forms and doses) on the milk protein content, dry matter intake, rumen pH value, total volatile fatty acids, the molar proportion of propionic acid, NH3 concentration, H2 molecule, microbial protein synthesis, metabolism of vitamin A, and the blood methemoglobin. This concludes that nitrate supplementation is an alternative feed additive for mitigating the enteric methane in ruminants without any adverse effects on animals’ health or performance despite its impact on the feed consumption rate.
