Abstract

The emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic on a global scale has caused major impacts on various sectors, including the education sector. In order to reduce the spread of Covid-19, many countries have implemented learning from home, distance learning or e-learning. Several online platforms that are widely used as learning media include Microsoft Teams, Google Classroom, and Canvas and Blackboard, which allow teachers to create learning development programs. These online platforms have various features including chat, video meetings and file storage that keep classes organized and easy to learn. Such change in the learning methods requires the adjustment of educational evaluation system or learning assessment towards the online tests or other forms of distance assessment. The main problem with online evaluation is that the exams are performed without the physical presence of both students and teachers As a consequence, verification of the examinees and the potential for cheating among the students have appeared as major obstacles during the online learning assessment. Another obstacle that arises in online exams is related to facilities such as hardware (laptops, androids, tablets, etc.), software as well as the stable internet connection for all students.

Abstract

Mineral absorption in ruminants have not been maximal. This would be seen from the various problems that occur in ruminants, one of which was caused by mineral deficiency, especially the mineral Selenium (Se). Therefore, it was necessary to have applied technology to increase the absorption of Se minerals, one of which was used by bionanomineral technology. The purpose of this study was to determine the production of bionanomineral Se from various types of Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) strains. The method used consisted of preparing tools and materials, breeding lactic acid bacteria, making Bionanomineral Se, and observed the production of Bionanomineral Se. The research treatment consisted of 2 stages, namely the first stage consisting of 4 treatments of different LAB strains: TSD 10, SPCE, DR162, and IA2, stage 2 each LAB strains were given treatment doses of 25 ppm and 50 ppm. The parameters observed included Stage 1: Bionanomineral production produced by intracellular and extracellular bacteria, stage 2: Optical Density (OD) and pH. The research design used a quantitative descriptive. The results showed that extracellular bionanomineral production was more than intracellular, the addition of 25 to 50 ppm Se showed that the OD of the four bacterial strains survived, and the pH results varied from each bacterial strain but were still within the normal range. The conclusion of this research was the production of bionanomineral Se as much as 25 ppm and 50 ppm in various types of different LAB strains, would be used as a potential source of organic Se minerals for ruminants.

Abstract

This experiment aimed to evaluate chemical composition, in vitro rumen fermentation, digestibility, and methane emissions of forages including bede grass, gamal (Gliricidia sepium), Indigofera, lamtoro (Leucaena leucocephala), elephant grass, mini elephant grass and Thai elephant grass. Forage samples were dried at 60oC for 24 hours, then ground to 1 mm sieve. The ground samples were used subsequently to determine the chemical composition and in vitro rumen fermentation test. Incubation was carried out in a water bath at 39oC for 48 h without replication. The results showed that all forages contained various crude protein at a range of 9-20% DM. The proportion of neutral detergent insoluble CP (NDICP) and acid detergent insoluble CP (ADICP) in forage was generally low, but the highest was found in bede grass. The highest NH3 concentration was found in Indigofera incubation, and lowest was in bede grass. All forage samples, except for mini elephant grass and Indigofera, had IVDMD and IVOMD below 70%. We identified low methane emissions from forage at 48 hours of incubation. It was concluded that legumes had a higher crude protein than in grass species and had low methane emissions. However, the relatively low digestibility of legume may limit its utilization.

Rice bran quality can be tested physically or chemically. The physical method is faster but less accurate, on the other hand, the chemical method is more accurate but takes longer. A new method with accurate results and faster time is needed. One possible method is to estimate the nutrient content from the physical properties. The objective of this research is to study the correlation between the value of physical properties with the nutrient content of rice bran. The rice bran samples were taken from 10 rice mills in different locations. All samples were analysed for the value of bulk density (BD), tapped density (TD), crude protein (CP), and crude fiber (CF) content. The data obtained were analysed using analysis of variance. The correlation value between physical properties and nutrient content was evaluated using a linear regression model. The results showed that the BD (263.84 – 349.11 gL-1), TD (407.35 – 507.82 gL-1), CP (9.15-13.90 %), and CF (8.69-15.97 %) of rice bran were significant (P<0.05) varied among locations. The value of BD (r=0.9446) and TD (r=0.9699) was very closely (P<0.01) positively correlated to CP, on the other hand, BD (r=-0.9415) and TD (r=-0.9571) very closely negatively correlated (P<0.01) with CF. It can be concluded that the quality of rice bran varies among locations. The crude protein and crude fiber content of rice bran can be predicted from the bulk density and tapped density values.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effects of dietary nitrate addition on performance, methane emission, nutrient utilization, and the nitrate toxicity of ruminants by using the meta-analysis methodology from in vivo trials. A total of 38 published papers and 139 studies were used. Parameters observed were feed intake, animal performance, enteric methane emission, and nitrate toxicity. Data were subjected to the mixed model methodology. Nitrate doses or forms were treated as fixed factors, while the different studies were treated as random factors. Results revealed that nitrate supplementation significantly decreased the milk protein content, milk fat content, dry matter intake, gross energy intake, the molar proportion of the propionic acid, methane production, and the metabolism of vitamin A in a linear pattern (p<0.05). Moreover, nitrate addition significantly increased nitrate intake, the molar proportion of the acetic acid, the ratio of acetic acid to propionic acid, hydrogen molecule production, microbial protein synthesis, and nitrite blood levels (p<0.05). However, treatments did not affect the milk yield, final body weight, nitrate retention, and blood methemoglobin. There was a significant interaction among the animal types and the nitrate (forms and doses) on the milk protein content, dry matter intake, rumen pH value, total volatile fatty acids, the molar proportion of propionic acid, NH3 concentration, H2 molecule, microbial protein synthesis, metabolism of vitamin A, and the blood methemoglobin. This concludes that nitrate supplementation is an alternative feed additive for mitigating the enteric methane in ruminants without any adverse effects on animals’ health or performance despite its impact on the feed consumption rate.

Abstract

This study aims to estimate and validate the accuracy of estimated Total Digestible Nutrient (TDN) content in forages based on the chemical composition of feed. Data on nutrient composition for estimates were obtained from the BR-CORTE database consisting of 86 types of forages and primary data from observations consisting of 19 types of forages. Analysis data is used Pearson correlation, multiple linear regression, determination coefficient (R2), and root mean square error (RMSE) for estimation models, variance test (ANOVA), and T-test for validation. The results showed that forage TDN had a negative correlation with Neutral Detergent Fibre (NDF) (P <0.01) and lignin (P <0.05), but was positively correlated with Non-Fibre Carbohydrate (NFC) (P <0.01), Ether Extract (EE) and Crude Protein (CP) (P<0.01). Thus, the TDN value can be estimated from the chemical composition in the feed. The regression equation that will be used to estimate forage TDN content is TDN = 0.482 NDF + 1.538 EE + 0.699 NFC + 0.718 CP (R2=0.994). Then, this equation is validated and compared to the Hartadi’s and Wardeh’s equations. The results of the T-test showed that the TDN value estimated is non significantly different with TDN Hartadi for cattle (P>0.05). It concluded TDN value of local forage can be estimated based on this estimation models.

Abstract

Corn is the main component in the manufacture of feed which functions as an energy source for poultry and ruminants. Requirements for the quality of corn as a feed ingredient are regulated in the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) for corn which includes moisture content, damaged seeds, mouldy seeds, foreign matter and aflatoxin. The purpose of this reserch was to evaluated and analyzed the quality of corn whether it was in accordance with SNI 2020. In this research, secondary data was used that obtained from six of feed testing laboratories and three feed mills, spread across Indonesia, including: West Java, Central Java, East Java, Banten, South Sulawesi and North Sumatera. The total sample from the feed testing laboratories were 403 samples and feed mills were 5.161 samples. One sample T-test was used to analyze the result from feed testing laboratories and feed mills compare to the 2020 SNI quality values. The result of one sample T-test showed that the result of moisture content, damage seeds, moldy seeds, and foreign matter were still not in accordance with SNI. Meanwhile, aflatoxin was already fulfilled SNI.

Abstract

Pathogen Botryodiplodia sp. is a fungus that causes dieback and stems rot diseases that attack forestry plants. The control currently being used in the field is using chemical pesticides, which are harmful to the surrounding environment and the plant itself, so there is a need for another alternative, namely using citronella and patchouli essential oils. Essential oils of citronella and patchouli have active compounds that act as antifungals to inhibit the growth of the pathogenic fungus Botryodiplodia sp. This study aimed to analyze the effect of citronella and patchouli essential oils on inhibiting the growth of the pathogen Botryodiplodia sp. in vitro. The results showed that the 10% patchouli treatment had the highest PDA and PDB media inhibition value. The lowest inhibition value was found in the 1% citronella treatment. The level of concentration, type of oil, and active ingredients contained in the oil affect the increase in effectiveness in controlling the pathogen Botryodiplodia sp. Keywords: antifungal, Botryodiplodia sp., citronella, in vitro, patchouli

Abstract

In rural areas, farmers face a significant challenge due to the lack of access to chemical analysis for feed ingredients. Therefore, there is a need for a new approximate analysis model that is lightweight and easy to apply. This study aimed to address this issue by utilizing bulk and tapped density analysis to estimate the composition of rice bran samples collected from 30 rural rice mill factories across 3 districts in Indonesia. The study used a correlation formula between bulk density values and tapped density values to estimate the crude protein and crude fiber contents of the samples. The study's results revealed significant variations (p<0.05) in the quality of rice bran due to various factors. Crude protein content significantly differed (p<0.05) across districts, with Bogor and Bandung having the highest values and Cirebon the lowest. Tapped density measurements generally yielded higher crude protein content values. Similarly, there were variations (p<0.05) in crude fiber content across districts and locations, with Cirebon having the highest values and Bogor the lowest. Tapped density measurements generally resulted in higher crude fiber content values, but there were significant variations observed in different districts and locations. The rice bran from the Bogor region showed indications of being of higher quality, with higher crude protein and lower crude fiber content compared to the other two regions.
