Abstract

The current meta-analysis aimed to estimate the effect of different selenium (Se) sources on immune organs, plasma immunoglobulins, blood profiles, and broiler performances. Related studies that met standard presence criteria were identified and mined from the Scopus database. The database was developed from 38 articles. Data were analyzed using the OpenMEE, considering the difference between organic selenium as fixed effects and different studies as random effects. This study showed that organic selenium feed supplementation improved the feed conversion ratio and increased the average daily feed intake and gain of broilers. Furthermore, the mortality of broilers fed organic Se was significantly lower than that of those fed inorganic Se. For the immune organ of the broiler, organic selenium feed supplement enhanced the thymus and spleen organs but did not affect the bursa organ. IgA and IgM were significantly higher in the broilers fed organic selenium feed; meanwhile, IgG of broilers fed organic selenium was lower than those fed inorganic selenium. The total protein blood concentration of broilers fed organic selenium was significantly higher than those fed inorganic Se. Meanwhile, there was no statistically significant difference in the effects of selenium source on cholesterol. Triglyceride concentrations of broilers fed organic Se are significantly lower than those fed inorganic Se. The ratio of heterophile to lymphocyte in broilers fed organic Se is significantly lower than in those fed inorganic selenium. In conclusion, the organic selenium feed supplement can promote production performance and immune parameters of broilers.

Abstract

Antibiotics Growth Promoter (AGP) are currently banned. Citrus leaves have active secondary metabolites that have the potential to be used as phytogenic feed additives. Many in vitro studies have reported the activity of lime leaves against E coli. Therefore, this study aims to integrate various studies in order to obtain comprehensive information on the activity of lime leaves against E coli with a meta-analysis. This research was conducted by collecting studies of citrus leaves from various species, origin, extraction methods, and different antibacterial test methods and comparing the treatment of citrus leaves with controls in inhibiting E coli by looking at the diameter of the inhibition zone. The results showed that kaffir lime leaves as an alternative phytogenic feed additive for AGP were effective in inhibiting E. coli. The inhibitory ability of E. coli bacteria was based on differences in the origin of lime leaves and extraction methods, while differences in levels, types of lime leaves, and antibacterial test methods did not affect the inhibition of E. coli. Citrus leaf extract at a low concentration of 5 mg/ml was able to inhibit E coli bacteria. Keywords: escherichia coli, lime leaf, meta-analysis

Abstract

Tofu dregs are one of the high-protein feed ingredients and it is highly palatable for livestock, particularly ruminants. However, tofu dregs have the main disadvantage, i.e., they easily deteriorate due to their high water and protein contents. Fermentation of tofu dregs may be applied in order to prevent such deterioration. The aim of this experiment was to evaluate tofu dregs as influenced by fermentation and tannin extract from acacia bark on in vitro rumen fermentation and digestibility parameters. The experimental treatments were: NK (tofu dregs without fermentation and 0% tannin), NA (tofu dregs without fermentation and 2% tannin), FK (tofu dregs with fermentation and 0% tannin), and FA (tofu dregs with fermentation and 2% tannin). Data were analyzed by analysis of variance according to a randomized complete block design with four treatments and four replications. Results revealed tofu dregs with fermentation treatment have a significant increase (P<0.05) in gas production, and ammonia but do not affect other parameters such as propionic acid and butyric acid on fermentation products. Opposite to the rumen fermentation product, the tannin gives a significant effect (P<0.05) on all digestibility parameters so can be concluded tofu dregs with fermentation and tannin approaches affect to rumen fermentation product and tannin has a weaker effect than fermentation even though 20 g/kg addition decrease digestibility of rumen in vitro. Keywords: ruminal fermentation product, silage, tannin, tofu dregs
