Abstract

Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) was chosen as an alternative for sustainable and low-impact mangrove crab cultivation. One of the main challenges in using RAS is determining the optimal feeding frequency. Inappropriate feeding can cause slow growth, increased mortality, and decreased water quality. This study aimed to analyze the effect of trash fish feeding frequency on the growth of mangrove crab (Scylla serrata) reared in RAS. The method used is an experimental method with a completely randomized design of 3 treatments and 4 replications. The research treatments tested were the frequency of feeding with FPP 01 once a day at 10 pm; FPP 02 twice a day at 10 pm and 5 pm; FPP 03 three times a day at 10 pm, 8 am and 5 pm. The parameters observed were survival, weight growth, carapace length growth, carapace width growth, specific growth rate and molting rate. The research data were analyzed using analysis of variance at a 95% significance level. The results showed that the frequency of feeding did not significantly affect the growth and survival of mud crabs in RAS. The frequency of feeding once is optimal to achieve maximum growth in mud crab cultivation using the RAS system with a survival rate of 100±0.00%, weight growth of 52.00±21.17 g, carapace length growth of 1.90±0.87 cm, carapace width growth of 1.60±0.70 cm, specific growth rate of 5.04±0.14%/day and molting rate of 67.00±0.58%.

Abstract

Coral reef ecosystems are vulnerable to damage. This ecosystem is found in tropical and subtropical seas and consists of reefs (calcareous structures) derived from coral animals and other biota. Considering these issues, efforts are needed to find other ways to enhance the exploration of marine resources without causing damage or increasing environmental productivity. This research employs the process of literature review. The results of article searches in the identified databases show that there are various factors that cause damage to the coastal coral reef ecosystem. There are two human (anthropogenic) factors, including the dumping of garbage into the sea, the use of destructive fishing tools, the mining of corals for consumption, and the temperature, brightness, and predators of coral. The damage to the coral reef ecosystem is caused by the human factor (80.98%) compared to the natural factor (58.09%). Addressing this problem, coral reefs in Indonesia have been saved through rehabilitation and conservation using techniques such as spider web transplantation and hybrid shelves and cor, as well as developing CMRIS (Coral Reef Management Information System) and COREMAP (Coral Reef Rehabilitation and Management Programme) as technology systems.

Abstract

The coastal area of Muara Angke in North Jakarta is facing increasingly serious environmental pressures due to the destruction of its mangrove ecosystem. Mangrove forests, which previously served as natural protection against ocean waves, abrasion, and tidal flooding, are now experiencing significant degradation. This phenomenon occurs in tandem with human activities such as reclamation, land conversion, and pollution. This research aims to examine in-depth the impact of mangrove destruction on coastal settlements and assess the extent to which implemented adaptation strategies can mitigate ecological and social risks. A qualitative approach with a case study design was used in this research. Data were obtained through direct field observations, interviews with the community and stakeholders, and a review of supporting documents. The analysis was conducted using a combination of descriptive techniques and evaluative instruments such as SWOT, IFAS, and EFAS to identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats facing the coastal area due to mangrove ecosystem degradation. The results show that mangrove destruction has a significant impact on the environmental quality of coastal communities, primarily through increased tidal flooding, abrasion, and decreased marine catches. Mitigation strategies implemented, such as the construction of stilt houses and the development of silvofishery areas, have not been fully successful due to a lack of community involvement and weak oversight. Therefore, a more participatory, integrated, and sustainability-oriented approach is needed to improve environmental conditions while enhancing the socio-economic resilience of Muara Angke residents.

Abstract

Coastal areas in Indonesia, including Padang City, face increasing vulnerability due to a combination of natural processes and human activities. This literature review synthesizes findings from various studies to assess the dimensions of coastal vulnerability and adaptation strategies, with a focus on Padang City, West Sumatra. The review reveals that major issues include abrasion, seawater intrusion, tidal flooding, ecosystem degradation, and limited adaptive capacity of coastal communities. Physical vulnerability is influenced by factors such as building density, land subsidence, ecosystem degradation, and inadequate adaptive infrastructure, while socio-economic and institutional challenges include weak governance, limited funding, and low community participation. Studies in different regions demonstrate that effective adaptation requires a combination of physical engineering, ecosystem-based approaches, socio-economic diversification, and institutional integration. For Padang City, the high exposure to coastal hazards, coupled with dependence on marine-based livelihoods, underscores the urgency of comprehensive adaptation strategies. These strategies should be proactive, data-driven, and involve cross-sector collaboration, integrating coastal vulnerability assessments into urban planning, policy frameworks, and community capacity-building efforts. Without such integrated approaches, Padang faces escalating risks to its environmental sustainability, socio-economic resilience, and long-term development.

Abstract

Freshwater cultivation is an economic endeavor for welfare purposes and is currently facing problems. This problem occurs because pellets are not economical and cause environmental pollution. The purpose of this article is to analyze the effect of using cow dung as fish pellets on Abiotic, Biotic, and Cultural (Human Habits). This research is a Quantitative Experimental Research using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) of 4 treatments with 6 replications, treatment in the form of feeding 3 g/day (Treatment 2) 6 g/day (Treatment 3) 9 g/day (Treatment 4) and Control (Treatment 1) uses chemical pellets 9 g/day. This design is used to see the effect of organic fish pellets on fish growth (biotic) such as fish weight and length. The hypothesis of this research is H1: There is an influence, H0: There is no influence. Hypothesis H1 is accepted if F count > F table. Then a measuring instrument is used to measure environmental parameters such as temperature, DO, pH, and Ammonia. The results of this research reveal: there is an influence of fish pellets on fish growth (Biotic), the use of cow dung pellets is still safe in the aquatic environment (Abiotic), cow dung pellets provide socio-economic value such as increasing income and creating new productive habits by making it a job. This research concludes that the use of cow dung pellets reduces environmental pollution, is economical, and is beneficial for humans. It is recommended that this research be further deepened and linked to other sciences.

Abstract

Crabs are a member of the mangrove ecosystem fauna and get their food source from litter. They turn the litter into detritus and maintain ecological balance. In addition, environmental conditions in the mangrove ecosystem also play an essential role in the abundance of brachyuran crabs. Influential environmental factors include temperature, salinity, water pH, and substrate type. This study aims to determine the effect of environment types on the presence of brachyuran crabs from families Ocypodidae and Sesarmidae in the mangrove ecosystem in Gemuruh River, Koto XI Tarusan District. The method used is a descriptive method, which is a direct observation approach to crabs and environmental conditions in the mangrove ecosystem area. Collection of crab samples and environmental condition data used a purposive sampling technique. The result shows six species distributed in the area, namely Uca bellator, U. rosea, Perisesarma eumolpe, Sarmatium germaini, P. plicatum, and Sesarma curoense. The distribution of species crabs in vegetation mangroves is Rhizophora stylosa, R. apiculata, R. mucronata, Sonneratia alba, and Nypa fruticans. The environmental parameters (temperature, salinity, water pH) at each station were within the relatively good category for the growth of the Ocypodidae and Sesarmidae crab families. Based on the analysis results of the relationship between the abundance of brachyuran crabs and environmental parameters (temperature, salinity, water pH), it can be seen that there is no significant correlation between temperature, salinity, and water pH with the abundance of Ocypodidae and Sesarmidae brachyuran crabs families in the mangrove ecosystem of Gemuruh River. The factor with a dominant influence on the abundance of these crabs is the substrate type. Keywords:AbundanceKoto XI TarusanMangroveOcypodidaeSesarmidae
