Abstract

This study aimed to analyze how eleventh-grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Sawan in the 2024/2025 academic year construct coherent paragraphs and how they apply cohesive devices in their writing. This study employed a mixed-methods approach, which combines qualitative and quantitative descriptive techniques. Data collection was carried out through the documentation of 22 paragraphs written by students, but only 20 of these paragraphs met the analysis criteria. The main instruments in this study were the coherence assessment rubric and the cohesion frequency table. According to the findings of this study, 90% of the paragraphs were found to be coherent, with an average coherence score of 84.35%. However, 10% did not have adequate coherence. The most frequently used cohesive devices included references, substitutions, ellipsis, conjunctions, and lexical cohesion, with references and conjunctions being the most prevalent. These findings highlight the importance of targeted teaching strategies in enhancing students' writing competence, particularly in developing logical flow and sentence connectivity within an academic context. Therefore, this study concludes that although most students can construct coherent and cohesive descriptive paragraphs, there is still a need for improvement in the application and variation of cohesive devices.

Abstract

This study aims to classify the communication strategies used by English lecturers and class coordinators in WhatsApp messages and describe how class coordinators respond to English lecturers' communication strategies in the context of Hofstede's cultural dimensions. This research method uses qualitative descriptive. The instrument in this study is document analysis in the form of screenshots of English Lecturer and Class Coordinator. Data analysis in this study used six steps: (1) Data organization and preparation, (2) Preliminary reading of Data, (3) Data Coding, (4) Developing themes and categories, (5) Detailed analysis and representation, (6) Interpretation of findings. The results of the analysis based on Hofstede's cultural dimensions show that English lecturers generally respond to messages in a relaxed and concise manner, while class coordinators use a more polite and formal tone in their communication. These findings reveal clear differences in communication styles, reflecting the hierarchical dynamics inherent in the educational environment. This study contributes to the understanding of communication practices in academic settings, emphasizing the influence of cultural dimensions on interaction strategies.

Abstract

This study aims to examine aspects of cohesion and coherence in descriptive paragraphs written by grade XI students of SMA Negeri 2 Gerokgak. Both aspects play an important role in conveying information in a clear and structured manner. This research uses a mixed method approach with an explanatory sequential design that combines quantitative and qualitative methods. Sampling was done through cluster random sampling method with a lottery system, and class XI-3 was selected as the research sample. The results showed that the majority of students were quite capable of writing descriptive paragraphs that were quite coherent and used cohesion devices appropriately. However, there were still students who had difficulty in maintaining consistency and logical flow in their writing. This finding emphasizes the importance of the teacher's role in instilling an understanding of cohesion and coherence in the writing learning process. With proper application of these two concepts, students can produce more systematic and communicative writing. Therefore, writing lessons that emphasize cohesion and coherence need to be continuously developed to improve the overall quality of students' writing.   Keywords: Coherence, Cohesion, and Descriptive Paragraph

Abstract

This research aims to know the language forms about code switching and code mixing that happened between sellers and buyers in the Sapeken traditional market. This research discusses about the language form of code switching and code mixing, and the types of code switching and code mixing, and the factors which influence the use of code switching and code mixing in buying and selling activities at the market. It applied a descriptive qualitative research. The subjects of the research are sellers and buyers. The object of the research is code switching and code mixing the use in their interaction. The types of data in the study were use qualitative data and primary the source of the data. The obtained data of the study were collected though recording and note-taking technique. This studied concluded that the speech community in the market were found using five different languages: Bajau, Mandar, Madurese, Javanese, and Indonesian, however when the do code switching and code mixing, they used language other than Indonesian. Their forms of code switching varied from Indonesian with Bajau languages, Bajau with Madurese languages, Bajau with Mandar languages, and Bajau with Javanese languages. Futhermore, the forms of code mixing varied from Indonesian with Bajau languages, Bajau with Javanese languages, Madurese with Bajau languages, and Bajau with Mandar languages. Before that, the types of the code switching used by the speech community of the traditional market are in the category of Intra-sentential, Inter-sentential, and Tag-switching. While, the types of code mixing, their use Insertion, Alteration, and Congruent Lexicalization. The last one, the factors which influence the use of the code switching were the Speakers, Interlocutor, and the Third-person Attendance. Whereas, the factors which influence the use of code mixing were the Social, Cultural, and Individual factors.

Abstract

This study aims to describe how deaf and hard-of-hearing restaurant staff in the Lovina area of Bali explain English-language restaurant menus using local sign language when communicating with international customers. Additionally, the research explores how staff communicate about items not listed on the menu. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, involving direct observation and in-depth interviews with deaf and hard-of-hearing staff at restaurants in Lovina The findings indicate that the staff utilize local sign language to effectively convey menu information to international customers. In instances where menu items are not available, they employ a combination of gestures, written notes, and translation applications to facilitate communication. This research highlights the importance of training in international sign language and the development of visual aids to enhance interactions between deaf and hard-of-hearing staff and international customers in the hospitality sector.

Abstract

This study investigates the students’ language attitude towards English and its correlation with students speaking skills of tenth-grade senior high school students in Bangli, Indonesia. Seventy-two tenth-grade students from one public school in Bangli, Indonesia, participated in this research. In collecting the data, the students answered a language attitude questionnaire adapted from Li & Wei (2022) and Siringo-ringo et al. (2023) for language attitude data and took a speaking performance test with the rubric adopted from O’Malley & and Pierce (1996). Descriptive statistics and Pearson Product Moment Correlation were used to determine the students’ language attitude levels and its correlation towards students speaking skills. The result from this study shows that the students’ language attitudes are positive in cognitive and affective aspects and fair in conative aspects. The correlational analysis results show a moderate and significant correlation between students’ language attitudes and speaking skills. (r = .517, p = .000). This result indicates that students’ language attitude still contributes enough to influencing students’ speaking skills. Keywords: language attitudes; speaking skills, correlational study

Abstract

The phenomenon of code mixing and code switching takes place in bilingual or multilingual societies. These phenomena occur not only in direct communication but also virtually on social media platforms, such as YouTube. This study was grounded in the theoretical frameworks of Hoffman (1991), who identifies three distinct types of code mixing: intra-sentential code mixing, intra-lexical code mixing, and code-mixing involving pronunciation change. Meanwhile, types of code switching are classified into tag switching, intra-sentential code switching, and inter-sentential code switching (Wei, 2007). This study analyzed the types of code mixing and switching used in one of Maudy Ayunda's YouTube Channel videos entitled "How I manage Stress – Maudy Ayunda," published on October 21, 2020, with a duration of 10 minutes and 44 seconds. It analyzed the qualitative content of one of Maudy Ayunda's YouTube videos. Data were collected by selecting and watching the video, transcribing it, identifying code mixing and code switching within the video, and re-checking the video. Then, the data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman's theory (2014) through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The study's findings revealed that code mixing and code switching were present in Maudy Ayunda's video, where 14 expressions were categorized as code mixing and 12 as code switching. The types of code mixing found in the video were intra-sentential and intra-lexical code mixing. Meanwhile, the kinds of code switching observed in the video included intra-sentential, inter-sentential, and tag switching. This study contributed to understanding how code mixing and code switching occur on social media platforms like YouTube by highlighting the different types of people commonly used in online communication. Future research is encouraged to include more videos or speakers to provide richer and more comprehensive data, as the current study is limited to a single video from a single public figure.

Abstract

This study investigates the utilization of Instagram as a tool for enhancing English language learning among higher education students. Amidst the growing influence of social media on student lifestyles, the research aimed to harness Instagram's potential for educational purposes, particularly in language acquisition. Employing a Design and Development (D&D) approach with the four-dimensional (4D) model - Define, Design, Development, and Dissemination - the study focused on creating and implementing English learning materials tailored for the Instagram platform. The research methodology included the use of a questionnaire to assess the effectiveness of the instructional materials. These materials were validated by a panel consisting of two media experts, two language experts, and two material experts, ensuring content validity. The study involved a purposively selected sample of 30 students, emphasizing first-semester English majors who were active Instagram users. This approach facilitated an evaluation of the reliability and validity of the instructional materials and the research instrument. Key findings indicated that Instagram as a learning platform significantly boosted student engagement and interaction in English language learning. The study revealed the importance of social media, particularly Instagram, in fostering a more interactive and engaging learning environment. However, the research faced limitations due to its reliance on self-reported data and its focus on a specific student demographic. The study recommends future research to expand beyond first-semester English majors and explore various social media content types for effective educational outcomes. Longitudinal studies and qualitative research methods are suggested to gain deeper insights into student interactions with social media in educational contexts. This research underscores the potential of integrating social media platforms like Instagram into educational curricula, tailored to the digital habits and preferences of contemporary students.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the effects of teachers' positive reinforcement and punishment on young learners' motivation in 21st-century learning environments. A quantitative research method was employed, utilizing a survey distributed to primary school students across various regions. The data were analyzed using statistical techniques to identify the relationship between the variables. The findings revealed that positive reinforcement significantly enhances student motivation, whereas punishment negatively affects it. The discussion highlights the implications of these results in the context of modern educational practices, where fostering motivation is crucial for young learners' engagement and success. The study concludes that teachers should emphasize positive reinforcement strategies over punishment to create a conducive learning atmosphere. The implications suggest that educational policymakers and practitioners should consider integrating positive behavioral approaches in the curriculum to promote student motivation effectively.
