Abstract

EMI program is an innovative program that has gained high popularity in the countries where English is a second or foreign language. This is due to the benefits that the program offers; to the students, the lecturers and the institutions. However, the program also brings up some challenges that have to be settled by all that involve.  This study investigates the lecturers’ perception on the benefits and challenges of EMI Program in a public university in North Bali, Indonesia. The data were collected by distributing questionnaires to the lecturers who taught in EMI classes. Data triangulation was conducted by doing a semi-structured interview with three  lecturers. The study findings revealed that the most of the lecturers agreed on the benefits of EMI classes in increasing the exposures of the lecturers and students to English and opportunity in using it and improving the English skills of both the lecturers and students, as well as the students’ content learning. Regarding the institutions’ profile and internationalization, most of the lecturers agreed that EMI classes give contribution to them. In addition, most of the lecturers also perceived that EMI classes increase the lecturers’ and students’ career and study prospect. In terms of the challenges of the EMI program, most of the lecturers mostly agreed that the lecturers’ and students’ language abilities, students’ participation, EMI pedagogy, which includes the effective teaching strategies were challenges that they faced in the program implementation. However, regarding learning resources and technology used in EMI classes, most of them disagreed with the statements; meaning that they did not encounter difficulty in accessing resources and integrating the needed technology in their EMI classes

Abstract

The improvement of students' speaking skills requires students to communicate with the interlocutors interactively. In the context of globalization, social media have become a medium of communication that can enhance students' speaking skills. The present study investigated what previous research had concluded on the use of YouTube videos to enhance the development of students' speaking skills by adapting George's (2008) model of library research into a qualitative design. The study revealed that YouTube videos had been proven to give better exposure to the students' speaking aspects like pronunciation, structure, vocabulary, intonation, grammar, and fluency. However, the use of YouTube videos also poses challenges, such as unstable internet connection, loss of interaction with peers and teachers, low comprehension of the videos, unsuitable length of videos, students’ low readiness and autonomy, and discrepancy between the videos and the language learning goals. These findings imply that while YouTube videos can be helpful learning tools, the right strategies need to cope with the challenges.

Abstract

One of the factors that greatly influence the ineffectiveness of language learning in schools is the limited resources, including textbooks, teaching materials, and other supporting tools needed for effective English learning. Therefore, supplementary learning materials are needed that can complement the lack of teaching materials in English Classes. As an initial stage in designing and developing supplementary learning materials, this research aims to conduct a needs analysis in two elementary schools to obtain an initial picture of the needs of teachers and students as a basis for designing supplementary learning materials. This research is a qualitative descriptive study. Data were collected by interviews and direct observation. Data from the interview were analyzed descriptively. Based on the results of the analysis, it is known that there are several problems, such as teachers’ difficulties in speaking English, students’ disinterest in learning English due to limited vocabulary, and lack of interactive learning activities. Therefore, additional trilingual learning materials are needed with three equivalent languages: English, Indonesian, and Balinese. Providing learning materials covering three languages and integrated with interactive activities and games is expected to be a more inclusive and effective solution for improving students’ language skills.

Abstract

Although the Merdeka Curriculum provides opportunities for all primary school education units to teach English as an elective subject, the learning process is often not optimal because it is taught by classroom teachers who do not have formal education as English teachers. In addressing this problem, various efforts have been made, one of which is developing trilingual English E-book teaching materials where in the textbook, English material has equivalents in both Indonesian and Balinese. However, in its development stage, this E-book needs to be tested regarding the impact of its use on students' English language skills. Therefore, this study aims to examine the effect of using the Trilingual English-Indonesian-Balinese E-book supplementary book on the productive skills of grade 1 elementary school students. Using an experimental design approach of one group pre-test post-test design as well as purposive sampling, this study involved grade 1 students in Buleleng Regency who were taught by classroom teachers without formal education as English teachers. Data collection used speaking tests for speaking skills and word writing.  The data obtained from the pre-test and post-test results were analyzed using Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA). The results of this study indicate that the use of the supplementary trilingual English-Indonesian-Balinese e-book significantly improves the speaking and writing skills of Grade 1 elementary students. Overall, this study demonstrates that the trilingual e-book has great potential in supporting students' productive skills at the elementary level, particularly in mastering speaking and writing skills.

Abstract

Playing is essential for children. Thus, play-based learning has been argued to create engaging learning. Employing literature review research from George, this study aims to provide a comprehensive review of play-based learning, the types of play-based learning, and their strengths and weaknesses for language learning. The data sources were previous studies published from 2015-2020 in reputable international journals and accredited national journals indexed by Sinta and other relevant sources. Play-based learning can be categorized into three types: child-directed play that results in involuntary creative learning; teacher-directed play, which allows teachers to set up more structured plays; and mutually-directed play, which combines both types of play to provide maximum benefits for both teachers and children. It implies that teachers should select the type of play that suits the children's needs, situation, and learning objectives when choosing to implement play-based learning.

Abstract

Due to linguistic difficulties, students with hearing impairments face unique challenges when studying English as a foreign language (EFL). This study examined how hearing-impaired junior high school students in Indonesia were taught and the barriers faced by teachers when teaching students in English. The study employed a descriptive qualitative methodology involving nine teachers from schools for special needs education in Bali. This study applies multiple techniques, including questionnaire distribution, interviews, observations, and document analysis. The study shows the absence of teachers’ prior experience in developing curriculum and syllabus. Other main issues were related to teachers’ and students’ lack of sign language understanding, lack of learning materials, and students’ learning characteristics. The teachers primarily used grammar-translation methods and applied ineffective classroom management. By these findings, policymakers need to review the English curriculum, provide special training for teachers, and design the classroom to satisfy the unique learning needs of the students.

Abstract

The obstacles encountered in online learning are teacher shortages and technical difficulties, barriers, resources, social contacts, and difficulties in delivering subjects and managing time to engage with students and evaluate their work. This study explores teachers' perceptions of the influence of the Daily Five Literacy Framework on literacy programs in the classroom. This preliminary research is designed as qualitative research following the interactive qualitative data analysis model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña. The study included three teachers in three different grades of fourth grade, who were observed over five days as they implemented the five habits in the Daily Five Literacy Framework in their classrooms. The research results revealed that the three teachers consistently applied the five habits, with relatively low fluctuations. However, the implementation was generally less intensive on Day 3 for the three teachers because they had to complete and submit their teaching administration to the school every Wednesday, which happened to be the 3rd Day of implementation. As a preliminary study, these findings indicate the need for further implementation of the literacy framework to reveal teacher consistency, the effectiveness of the framework for building literacy habits, and to identify factors outside of instructional design that may negatively impact the successful implementation of the framework.

Abstract

In supporting learning for Deaf or Hard of Hearing/DHH children, it is not easy finding learning sources that are accessible online, especially in English. Furthermore, during the COVID-19 pandemic, when learning was required to be carried out online, there were no learning applications that included English sign language that could be used by teachers and students as learning media. Thus, this study aims to analyze the need for developing multimedia-based English learning materials for Deaf or Hard of Hearing (DHH) children. This qualitative study involved DHH students and instructors in Special School (SLB), Bali. The need analysis was conducted to identify the ongoing situation of DHH children in the context of developing English multimedia learning materials. Interview and observation techniques applying two types of instruments in the form of an interview guide and field notes were used to collect the information towards the English learning needs for DHH children. The results of the study identified several needs that underlie the development of English multimedia learning materials, namely inadequate English instructors, text-based teaching materials, and the less than optimal teaching and learning process during the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, the development of multimedia-based English learning materials is needed.

Language is essential in social interaction. It is used by society to communicate with others. Besides, language in society is used as a means of communication to express ideas, intentions, opinions, and purposes. In addition, language also has the function of expressing someone’s feelings and emotions. Politeness becomes one of the crucial things to maintain the conversation running well in society. The communication starts from the small circle and then comes to the big circle. The small circle for example in family members is one of the communications that can begin before going to society. Therefore, the present study aimed to analyze the types of politeness strategies used by Rimbi’s family members. This research was categorized as descriptive qualitative research. A descriptive qualitative research design was used to describe the positive politeness in family member conversations. There were 5 members chosen as the subjects in this research. It consisted of a father, a mother, and 3 sisters. The research data were the script of conversation in the form of sentences, clauses, or words. The findings show that the family members rarely use negative politeness despite that bald-off record and off record become the most used strategies use in the family members.
