Abstract

Abstract: This research investigated communication strategies used by female and male students of ELT at Universitas Negeri Malang and their perception on the use of communication strategies in oral communication. This research employed descriptive qualitative research design. It used purposeful sampling technique. It was found out that both female and male students only used 10 out of 12 communication strategies. Both male and female students perceived that communication strategies were helpful to cope with difficulties, to maintain the conversation, to negotiate meaning, to solve problems, and to enhance the effectiveness of communication.Key Words: communication strategies, across genders, ELT, Universitas Negeri MalangAbstrak: Penelitian ini mencari strategi komunikasi yang digunakan oleh mahasiswa pendidikan bahasa Inggris laki-laki dan perempuan di Universitas Negeri Malang dan persepsi mereka terhadap penggunaan strategi komunikasi tersebut dalam komunikasi lisan. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan dengan menggunakan desain penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Penelitian ini menggunakan teknik purposive sampling. Dari penelitian ini, ditemukan bahwa baik mahasiswi maupun masiswa sama-sama hanya menggunakan 10 dari 12 strategi komunikasi. Para mahasiswi dan mahasiswa juga sama-sama setuju bahwa strategi komunikasi sangat membantu mereka dalam komunikasi lisan.Kata kunci: strategi komunikasi, lintas gender, pendidikan bahasa Inggris, Universitas Negeri Malang

Abstract

Abstract: This study is intended to investigate the underlying factors contributing to students’ speaking anxiety across learning styles. This article is a part of a larger study on EFL freshmen speaking anxiety across their learning styles which highlight the main factors that lay behind speaking anxiety. This study was carried out in one of Islamic universities in Malang. The data were collected through students’ questionnaires. The results reveal that fear of negative evaluation, test anxiety, and communication apprehension play the underlying factors of speaking anxiety across learning styles. Further, recommendations for lecturers are provided.Keywords: speaking anxiety, learning styles, factors Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meneliti factor-faktor dasar yang dapat menjadikan kecemasan berbicara pada mahasiswa lintas gaya belajarnya. Artikel ini merupakan bagian dari penelitian utama yaitu kecemasan berbicara mahasiswa baru lintas gaya belajarnya, dimana penelitian ini menekankan pada pembahasan factor-faktor utama dari kecemasan berbicara. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di salah satu perguruan tinggi Islam di Malang. Data didapatkan dari angket mahasiswa. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa ketakutan akan penilaian negative, kecemasan terhadap ujian, and ketakutan dalam berkomunikasi merupakan factor-faktor yang mendasari kecemasan berbicara lintas gaya belajar. Selanjutnya, peneliti memberikan rekomendasi terhadap dosen pengajar.Kata kunci: kecemasan berbicara, gaya belajar, faktor-faktor

Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to examine the use of Reading Log to build Lao’s junior student’s English literacy and related to the Reading Log as a useful literacy practice that can build the student’s English literacy that can promote parental involvement in student’ s English literacy, and the challenges in implementing Reading Log in SENGSAY school. The researcher used qualitative methodology to conduct this study by observation, interviews with teachers and some parents to find out how teachers conduct Reading Log to teach students and how Reading Log promote parental involvement.

Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to develop reading materials for the Sport Science Sophomores of Univer-sitas Negeri Malang due to the unavailability of the materials. The design of her research is R and D (Research and Development) simplified from Borg and Gall design (1983). The result of preliminary study showed that the available materials were not in line with the syllabus since it still reflects the teaching of General English, while the syllabus emphasizes teaching English texts related to Sport Science. The final products of this research are ‘Student’s Book and Teacher’s manual’.Key Words: reading materials, sophomores, sport scienceAbstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengembangkan bahan bacaan untuk mahasiswa tingkat 2 jurusan Ilmu Keolahragaan di Universitas Negeri Malang karena tidak tersedianya bacaan bahan ajar. Desain penelitiannya adalah R dan D (Penelitian dan Pengembangan) yang disederhanakan dari  desain Borg dan Gall. Hasil penelitian pendahuluan menunjukkan bahwa bahan yang tersedia tidak sesuai dengan silabus karena masih mencerminkan ajaran Bahasa Inggris umum, sementara silabus menekankan pengajaran teks bahasa Inggris yang berhubungan dengan Sains Sport. Abstract

Abstract: This study is intended to develop a textbook for pre-service flight attendant students having training in the flight attendant training center. The developed textbook is based on the existing syllabus and need analysis period. The developmental research from Borg and Gall is implemented. The needs survey is implemented to pre-service students, ESP teachers in Sekar Gegani, and experienced flight attendants. The developed product contains ten units related to actual working atmosphere in-flight. They are: 1) Pre-flight briefing 2) Boarding, 3) Announcement 4) Before Take-off, 5) Meal Service, 6) Dealing with problem, 7) Sales on board, 8) Emergency, 9) Disembarking, and 10) Getting a job. Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this study is to describe students’ willingness to communicate in English through virtual classroom during Covids-19 Pandemic. This study used descriptive qualitative research design, conducted at SMK Negeri 8 Malang. Data collection methods were obtained from students’ responses on questionnaires and compiled with transcripts of the virtual interview result. The finding showed the students preferred to communicate in English written rather than English spoken.Keywords: student's willingness, English communication, virtual classroomAbstrak: Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan kesiapan para siswa untuk berkomunikasi menggunakan bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain kualitatif deskriptif yang telah dilakukan di satuan pendidikan SMK Negeri 8 Malang. Adapun pengambilan data dilakukan berdasarkan hasil tanggapan para siswa dalam mengisi kuisioner dan dikonfirmasikan dengan hasil wawancara antara peneliti dengan siswa yang terlibat dalam penelitian ini. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwasanya para siswa lebih memilih berkomunikasi menggunakan bahasa Inggris secara tertulis.Kata kunci: keinginan siswa, komunikasi Bahasa Inggris, kelas virtual

Abstract

Abstract: This study investigates Indonesian EFL learners’ corrective feedback preferences including the timing, types of error, strategies of corrective feedback, and providers of error correction; and the relationship between foreign language anxiety and preferences for corrective feedback among students. Two hundred fifty seven EFL English department undergraduate students from two different course grades participated in the survey. The data were collected through questionnaire as the main data and interview as the supplementary data. The students’ were assigned to either a low anxiety group or a high anxiety group. The results showed that both sophomore students and freshman students agreed that student errors should be treated; freshman students and sophomore students had significantly similar opinions about perception, types, strategies, and providers of error correction.Key Words: students’ preference, corrective feedback, speaking instructionAbstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengungkap pilihan siswa terhadap umpan balik korektif yang termasuk waktu umpan balik korektif, tipe kesalahan umpan balik korektif, strategi umpan balik korektif, dan pemberi umpan balik korektif. Dua ratus lima puluh tujuh mahasiswa Bahasa Inggris dari dua tahun kelas yang berbeda ikut serta dalam penelitian berbentuk survey. Data kuantitatif diperoleh menggunakan kuesioner sebagai data utama dan interview sebagai data tambahan. Hasil pengolahan data menunjukkan bahwa kedua tingkat kelas siswa baik dari mahasiswa baru dan juga mahasiswa tahun kedua memiliki persamaan penilaian terhadap umpan balik korektif, mereka setuju bahwa kekeliruan segera dikoreksi; mahasiswa baru dan mahasiswa tahun kedua memberikan persamaan penilaian yang signifikan tentang persepsi, tipe, strategi, dan juga pemberi umpan balik korektif.Kata kunci: pilihan siswa, umpan balik korektif, instruksi berbicara

Abstract

Abstract: This study aimed at elaborating the use of Instagram in teaching writing for university freshmen. This current study contained a reflection from a lecturer who had used Instagram to improve students’ writing skill through process-genre based approach. The data were taken from a reflective daily journal. Further, the journal specifically informed what worked well and what did not from the use of Instagram for writing skill improvement. The result showed that Instagram could significantly improve students’ writing skill, especially to help them find that writing was part of social activities and create a good composition that had been perfectly finalized.Abstrak: Penelitian ini membahas tentang penggunaan Instagram dalam pengajaran writing skill (keterampilan menulis) pada mahasiswa tahun pertama. Penelitian tersebut berisi tentang sebuah refleksi dari seorang pengajar yang telah menggunakan Instagram sebagai media pendukung pembelajaran writing skill melalui pendekatan proses-genre. Data penelitian berasal dari jurnal harian yang sekaligus digunakan untuk mencatat serangkaian kegiatan yang dilalui pada proses pengajaran. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan Instagram mampu meningkatkan keterampilan menulis mahasiswa sehingga mereka menyadari bahwa menulis merupakan bagian daripada kegiatan sosial serta, serta membantu mereka untuk bisa membuat sebuah karangan atau tulisan yang sempurna.

Abstract

CLIL has now become an alternative approach that many ESP English teachers could use in their classes to keep up with the current approach in language teaching. Apparently, there is still a question on what kind of attitudes ESP teachers have on the use of CLIL for teaching ESP. The present study aims at reporting research findings on teachers’ attitudes toward the use of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) approach in the teaching of English for specific purposes (ESP), in terms of teaching material, teaching method, teaching media, and assessment.CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) kini telah menjadi pendekatan alternatif yang bisa digunakan oleh dosen ESP dalam kelas mereka untuk dapat mengikuti pendekatan terkini dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris. Selain itu, ternyata masih ada pertanyaan tentang bagaimana sikap dosen terhadap penggunaan CLIL untuk mengajar ESP. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melaporkan temuan penelitian mengenai sikap dosen terhadap penggunaan CLIL dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris untuk tujuan tertentu (ESP), terkait materi, metode, dan media pembelajaran, serta penilaian.

Abstract

Abstract:  The growth of distance education provides an accessibility of teaching-and-learning-process involving the use of ICT. Hence, teachers’ competencies regarding the integration of ICT also one of the key success of teaching. Through TPACK, this study aims at investigating EFL teachers’ skills on technology integration and their preferable ICT based learning system amidst distance education. Moreover, this study also intends to analyze whether EFL teachers’ TPACK are significantly different in terms of teaching categories and gender. This survey study implicated 139 in-service EFL teacher in the city of Malang, East Java, Indonesia. The data were collected through questionnaire and analyzed by computing the frequency, ANOVA, and t-test. The finding revealed that the EFL teachers’ TPACK was decent. Furthermore, gender and teaching categories were not regarded as the factors that influenced EFL teachers’ TPACK. Lastly, Google Classroom was perceived as the most preferable ICT based learning system according to the teachers. Regarding the result of analysis, recommendation for teachers and educational stakeholders were also made in this study.Abstrak: Perkembangan Pendidikan Jarak Jauh (PJJ) menawarkan aksesibilitas proses belajar-mengajar yang sangat melibatkan penggunaan TIK. Karenanya, kompetensi guru terhadap integrasi TIK juga diangap sebagai salah satu kunci keberhasilan pembelajaran. Melalui TPACK, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menginvestigasi ketrampilan guru EFL terkait integrasi teknologi dan sistem pembelajaran berbasis TIK yang guru EFL gunakan saat Pembelajaran Jarak Jauh (PJJ). Selain itu, penelitian ini juga bermaksud untuk menganalisa perbedaan TPACK guru EFL berdasarkan kategori mengajar dan gender. Penelitian survei ini melibatkan 139 guru EFL di Kota Malang, Jawa Timur, Indonesia. Pengumpulan data dilakukan menggunakan kuesioner dan dianalisa dengan menghitung frekuensi jawaban responden, ANOVA, dan t-test. Hasil penlitian menunjukkan bahwa TPACK guru EFL baik. Kemudian, gender dan kategori mengajar bukanlah faktor yang membedakan TPACK guru EFL. Terakhir, Google Classroom merupakan media pembelajaran yang paling disukai oleh guru. Berdasarkan hasil analisa, rekomendasi untuk guru dan beberapa pihak terkait juga dibuat dalam penelitian ini.
