Abstract

Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED) is a condition of long-term undernutrition in pregnant women, indicated by a mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) of less than 23.5 cm, and poses risks to both maternal and fetal health. One of the government strategies to address this issue is the provision of locally based supplementary food (Local Supplementary Feeding). However, most previous studies have predominantly employed quantitative approaches and focused on program coverage, while in-depth case-based analyses at the primary health care level remain limited. This study aimed to describe changes in the nutritional status of pregnant women with CED before and after receiving Local Supplementary Feeding in the working area of Pekanbaru City Primary Health Center in 2024. A qualitative approach with a descriptive case study design was applied to three pregnant women with CED from August 2024 to May 2025. Data were collected through interviews and secondary data from the e-PPGBM system. The results showed an increase in body weight ranging from 5.5 to 12.95 kg and an increase in MUAC of 1–2 cm. However, one case of low birth weight was still observed, indicating the need to evaluate the quality and effectiveness of Local Supplementary Feeding interventions.

Abstract

Semprawang (Dillenia ochreata) belongs to the Dilleniaceae family that has been used by the Musi tribe, Banyuasin, South Sumatra, for scurvy medicine. This study aims to isolate secondary metabolites from D. ochreata leaves n-hexane extract and test their antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The D. ochreata leaves were extracted through the maceration method with n-hexane solvent, and the isolated compounds were purified using column chromatography. The isolated compounds were analyzed using FT-IR, 1H-NMR, and 13C-NMR spectroscopy and compared the spectroscopic data with the literature. The antibacterial activity was determined against the E. coli and S. aureus bacteria with the disc diffusion method and MIC value was determined by the microdilution method. Based on the analysis of the spectroscopic data and compared with literature data, it is suggested that the isolated compounds are 3β-glucopyranosyl-lup-20(29)-en-28-oic, which mixes with aromatic compound. The isolated compounds showed antibacterial activity with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) to E. coli at 120 µg/mL and S. aureus at 60 µg/mL

Abstract

Rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum) peel contains various bioactive compounds, including phenolics, flavonoids, and ellagic acid, which function as antioxidants. Antioxidants are compounds needed to inhibit radical reactions and oxidation processes that trigger various diseases. This study aims to determine the potential of rambutan peel to become a herbal tea. The study began with the determination of total phenolic and flavonoid levels in aqueous extracts of rambutan peel, followed by antioxidant activity assessment using the DPPH and FRAP methods. As a comparison, tea from tea leaves (Camellia sinensis) and herbal teas from kelor (Moringa oleifera) leaves and senduduk (Melastoma malabathricum L) leaves were used. The results showed that the aqueous extract of rambutan peel had a total phenolic content of 344.07 mg GAE/g and a flavonoid content of 7.96 mg QE/g, higher than those of tea leaves, kelor leaves, and senduduk leaves. Antioxidant activity test using the DPPH method showed that rambutan peel aqueous extract is an active antioxidant with an IC₅₀ of 0.797 µg/mL, with antioxidant activity 5.45 times stronger than tea leaves, 10.33 times stronger than moringa leaves, and 4.32 times stronger than senduduk leaves. Antioxidant test using the FRAP method also showed that the antioxidant capacity of rambutan peel water extract is 29.66 mgTE/g, higher than those of tea leaves, kelor leaves, and senduduk leaves, with values of 19.84 mgTE/g, 6.12 mgTE/g, and 14.52 mgTE/g, respectively. These data indicate that rambutan peel has strong antioxidant activity and has the potential to be developed as a herbal tea. Keywords: Nephelium lappaceum peel, antioxidants, herbal tea, DPPH, FRAP

Abstract

Seminyak (Champereia manillana) is a local food crop from Rokan Hulu, Riau, which is often consumed as a vegetable. Although traditionally used, valid scientific information regarding its nutritional composition is limited, which hinders its development as a functional food. This study aimed to analyze the proximate nutritional and fiber content of Seminyak leaves to evaluate their potential as functional food. The proximate content (moisture, ash, protein, fat, and carbohydrates) and fiber content were analyzed using AOAC 1993 and FOSS Analytical standard methods. The results were descriptively analyzed by presenting the values obtained from these tests. The analysis results showed that Seminyak leaves have a significant protein content of 4.41% and a high ash content of 2.37%. The fat content was very low (0%). The average values of other proximate nutrients included water (78.85%), carbohydrates (9.72%), and crude fiber (2.9%). With this nutritional profile, especially the high protein and mineral (ash) content and low fat content, Seminyak leaves have great potential as a source of vegetable protein and minerals and as a raw material for developing functional food products, which can contribute to local food diversification and food security.

Abstract

Keratin waste is highly recalcitrant due to its complex protein structure, requiring efficient biodegradation strategies. This study aimed to evaluate and optimize keratinase production of thermophilic Bacillus licheniformis AAL3 isolated from the Air Putih hot spring, Lebong, Bengkulu. Qualitative keratinolytic activity was determined using feather meal agar, while quantitative enzyme activity was measured spectrophotometrically based on tyrosine release. The isolate exhibited a higher keratinolytic index (5.0) compared to B. licheniformis SCL2 (1.5). Quantitative analysis showed that AAL3 produced higher cell density (8.9 × 10? CFU/mL) and keratinase activity (1.0074 U/mL). Optimization studies revealed that maximum keratinase production occurred at 60 °C and pH 9. Among the tested carbon sources, 1% glucose resulted in the highest cell growth and enzyme activity, whereas 0.4% peptone was the most effective nitrogen source. The results demonstrate a strong positive correlation between bacterial growth and keratinase production. These findings indicate that B. licheniformis AAL3 has significant potential as a thermophilic keratinase producer for biotechnological applications, particularly in keratin waste biodegradation.
